NEW INFORMATION
Veteran's Day
In honor of Veteran's Day on Monday, the social studies and language arts teachers reminded students through open forum discussions and writing responses about the importance of those who have served our country. We celebrate our Veterans for their patriotism, love of our country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for us.
See some student reflections below:
- Veterans Day means to me to honor the people that helped the country have peace and independence. We need to honor them so their legacy will stay on for generations ahead. People should remember them as time goes on.
- Veterans Day means to me to honor those who have fought for our freedom. It is important to realize how much they sacrificed in order to fight for our freedom.
- Veterans Day to me is a symbol of unification and peace. Veterans fought for our country for us to be safe and live happy lives. It is important to honor these people because they risked their lives so we could live prosperously in peace.
- Veterans Day is a day where we honor the men and women who served our country. It is important to honor them because without them, we wouldn't have a military, and our country wouldn't be as well as it is today.
- I am so thankful for all of the Veterans that protect our country. I am also so thankful that the United States provides a safe haven to be free, speak my mind, and protect my rights.
- I am thanking my dad because he served in the military and was in the Air Force. I am thankful for him because he served for our country and kept it safe.
Grade 6 Science
Students in Mr. Johnson's 6th grade science class created oobleck. The oobleck acts both like a liquid and a solid, mimicking the properties of the Earth's Mantle as it cracks and resists during a sudden impact, but flows like a liquid under gentle, continuous pressure.
World Kindness Day
For World Kindness Day, which was Wednesday, November 13th, the students and staff wrote about ways that others have shown kindness to them. Students and staff have been stopping by the wall throughout the week to read the wonderful vegetables in the CDW Patch!
NJHS Group Project
The National Junior Honor Society just completed a group project, which was donating food to the Old Tappan Food Pantry. They collected over 100 items for families in need. Students also joined together after school to make colorful cards to accompany the gracious donations.
CDW Brain Busters
The CDW Brain Busters team, represented by Joseph Jin, Katie Jung, Kevin Kim, Lina Kim, Lydia Kim, Jordan Lee, Ryo Malhotra, and Justin Shin participated in the second meet of the season at Norwood. Joseph, who was the captain of his team, made it to the final round and came in second place overall. The next Bergen Brain Busters Meet is at home in December.
CDW Debate Team
On Wednesday, November 13th, the CDW Debate Team participated in their second tournament of the year, held at NVOT. Debaters presented cases for and against the United States federal government significantly strengthening U.S. protection of domestic intellectual property rights in copyrights, patents, and/or trademarks.
Teammates Katie Jung and Aeyin Yoo won both their Affirmative and Negative rounds, with 23 points against Northvale and 20 points against Tenafly. The following teams did an excellent job debating for their first time: Ariana Rampersad and Ella Mor, Katelyn Pulickal and Mirna Abdi, Lois Kwon and Chloe Kim, Joseph Jin and Liam Rampersad, and Teyla Nguyen and Elaine Lee!
Dressing for the Weather
As the cold weather starts to take over, it is important to send your child(ren) to school with the appropriate attire to attend outside Recess. Students have been reminded during OTBN's morning announcements to bring their coats, gloves, scarves, and hats to lunch with them so that they are prepared for Recess.
OTEA Celebrates a Day of Gold: Josephine's Garden
Please join the Old Tappan Education Association as they celebrate "A Day of Gold" on Friday, November 22nd. Wear gold or yellow and donations will be collected to support children receiving cancer treatment at Sanzari Children's Hospital.
Grade 5 L.E.A.D. (Law Enforcement Against Drugs)
Each year, we partner up with the Old Tappan Police Department to offer the LEAD (Law Enforcement Against Drugs) program for our Grade 5 students. The students started the LEAD program through Mr. Bambach’s Social Studies classes beginning this week.
COUNSELOR'S CORNER
8th Grade Information
Students who submitted a transcript release form to Ms. Adamo for Catholic high schools, your records were sent on Wednesday, November 13. All other transcript requests will be sent over the next few weeks. Once Ms. Adamo sends them, she will send an email to your child.
Ms. Adamo will continue to post information regarding NVOT on her Google Classroom. This way, students and families can locate the information easily.
Important Date: NVOT invites Grade 8 parents/guardians to a live, virtual Q&A Session on Wednesday, November 20, 2024 at 6:00 PM. You may sign up using this Google Survey Form. You should have received an email from NVOT on Tuesday, November 5th with more information.
Reminders: High School Scheduling conferences typically take place at the end of January and occur at CDW, during the hours of 8:30 AM- 3:00 PM. Ms. Adamo, along with a representative from NVOT, meets with each eighth grader and their parent/guardian to answer any questions about NVOT and to choose their ninth-grade electives and their world language. All other courses are based on recommendations from the students' eighth grade teachers. At the beginning of January, an email will be sent to all Grade 8 families to sign up for a conference. All students are encouraged to create a schedule at NVOT, even if they are planning on attending a different school in the fall.
6th Grade
On Tuesday, November 12th, Ms. Adamo taught another character education lesson to the sixth grade. This month’s lesson focused on the topic of Belonging: How can we create a community where students feel welcome and included? Part of the lesson focused on how some students feel pressure to say or do things that aren’t nice/offensive in order to fit in, and how doing this can cause students to feel conflicted.
Students shared examples/situations that help them feel accepted among their peers and friends; they also shared ways that make them feel left out or excluded, as well. Many students also brought up how social media (specifically Tik Tok and YouTube) is the way they are learning to say or do negative, mean things. Everyone was reminded that participating in hurtful language or actions is creating a community where students do not feel like they belong, and they were encouraged to try more kindness and inclusion of others.

If you order lunch from an approved vendor for delivery, please make sure the vendor knows your child's first and last name and grade level.
