All you need to know about WES field trips

We Grow through Field Trips!
Field trips are a special part of school. Field trips allow students to experience new environments, learn in unique places, apply skills learned in the classroom, and connect with the real world.
All students are included in field trips. We calculate the cost of field trips to include gas, driver pay for bus transportation and admission tickets. Costs are calculated based on the participation of every student. All students will be expected to ride our bus transportation to field trips and will also be provided a free lunch (or snack) from our cafeteria. We invite parent chaperones to attend many of our field trips, for a separate cost. Some field trips, like those to the JAWCC, are required by Wilkes County Schools and do not allow chaperones. Chaperones must be approved volunteers through WCS.
We have calculated the cost of field trips to be $60 for each student which includes all trips for your child’s grade level. We know paying for field trips can be a burden for families, so we offer payment plans to help manage the costs. This amount can be paid in 3 different ways as follows:
- 1 payment of $60 paid by Friday, September 6, 2024
- 2 payments of $30 each paid by Friday, September 6, 2024 and Friday, December 6, 2023
- 6 payments of $10 each paid by the first Friday of each month (Sept, Oct, Nov, Dec, Jan, Feb)
Field trips are important to learning, and we look forward to many memorable field trip days!
This year Wilkes County Schools has implemented an online payment system called School Cash Online. This platform allows parents and guardians to conveniently pay for various school-related expenses from the comfort of their own homes.

Sign Up to Chaperone
We welcome parent chaperones to join us for many field trips. Extra chaperones allow for smaller groups and can be a great way to enjoy the day with your child. Some field trips, like those to the JAWCC, are required by Wilkes County Schools and do not allow chaperones. Teachers will let parents know details in advance when parent chaperones can join us. Except for the Raleigh trip, parent chaperones must drive on their own to field trips. You must be an approved WCS volunteer to chaperone students on field trips.
We ask that all parents/guardians who plan to attend field trips sign up to be Level 2 volunteers at the start of the year. It takes a few weeks to verify volunteers, and signing up early will make sure that you are approved in time for this year’s field trips. You only have to sign up with Volunteer Tracker once each year.
WCS uses Volunteer Tracker to help organize this process, and we use Sign Up Genius (shared via email and ClassDojo) to make signing up easy and convenient. To get signed up, follow steps below.
1. Go to www.wilkescountyschools.org
2. Go to the PARENTS tab at the top (or VOLUNTEER at the bottom).
3. Click on VOLUNTEERS.
4. Click on VOLUNTEER TRACKER.
5. Go to the green NEW REGISTRATION and follow instructions from there.
Level 1 volunteers can help in many ways. Level 1 volunteers can sign up to help with book fairs, school events, class parties and projects, Field Day, Fall Festival, and proctoring for tests.
Level 2 volunteers can do all level 1 tasks but can also help chaperone field trips and work more closely with students in small groups. Level 2 volunteers can also sign up for classroom tutoring and assistance, reading buddy program, tutoring, leading after school activities, and chaperoning school events field trips.
