A Head Lice Memo From Nurse Jenna
Dear Parents,
We hope this letter finds you well. We are writing to inform you about an important topic that may occasionally come up in elementary schools—head lice.
What are Head Lice?
Head lice are tiny insects that live on the scalp and feed on small amounts of blood. They can be spread through direct head-to-head contact, such as when children play closely together. It is important to note that head lice are not related to cleanliness or hygiene, and they do not carry or spread any diseases.
How to Monitor for Head Lice
Head lice are most often found around the scalp, behind the ears, and at the nape of the neck. If you're concerned your child may have lice, here are some helpful tips for monitoring:
Look for signs: The most common symptom of head lice is itching, caused by an allergic reaction to lice bites. You may also notice small, white or yellowish nits (lice eggs) attached to the hair shafts close to the scalp.
Perform a lice check: Use a fine-toothed comb or your fingers to carefully check your child's hair. If you find nits or lice, it is important to treat them as soon as possible.
How to Treat Head Lice
If you discover head lice or nits (eggs) in your child’s hair, please treat your child before they return to school. We appreciate your cooperation in helping prevent further spread. Lice can be treated with over-the-counter or prescription medications designed to kill lice and nits. Follow the instructions on the product carefully, and be sure to comb your child's hair thoroughly to remove nits. In addition to treatment, washing bedding, hats, and clothing worn by your child in hot water will help prevent re-infestation.
How to Prevent the Spread of Lice
To help prevent lice from spreading to others, encourage your child to avoid head-to-head contact with others. Remind them not to share personal items such as hats, combs, or hair accessories. If you notice that your child has lice, please let the school nurse know, so we can work together to prevent further spread in the classroom.
A Few Final Thoughts
Please rest assured that head lice are a common occurrence and can affect anyone. They are not a health risk, and with prompt treatment, they are easy to manage. If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
Sincerely,
Jenna Applegate
