The Walden Weekly
May 3, 2024
Dear Walden Families,
We had an amazing week at Walden School! Students had the opportunity to join our exciting Fun Run today. Students walked, skipped, hopped, and ran for Walden! Thank you to our PTO for coordinating this wonderful event and thank you to all of our families who donated to the PTO!
We also enjoyed the 5th Grade Music Show this week. Students wrote their own songs and speaking roles taking us through their time at Walden. It was an amazing performance! Last night, our 1st, 3rd, and 5th grade students had a great time at our art show. Thank you to Mrs. Brown and Mrs. Stade for all of your hard work in putting together wonderful fine arts showcases for our students.
As a reminder, next week is teacher appreciation week! Our Walden Staff is amongst the most dedicated and devoted of educators. Feel free to send our staff a special note or token of your appreciation next week. Your kind words go a long way and we thank you for taking the time to share your appreciation!
Have a great weekend and we'll see you back at school on Monday!

Walden Field Day Information
We are excited for our upcoming Field Day on Friday, May 31st! We also look forward to welcoming parents as volunteers to help run different stations. A Sign-Up Genius link will go out this coming Wednesday at noon with opportunities to sign up for one of two time slots. We ask that only one parent per household signs up in order to provide opportunities for as many families as possible to join us. Our time slots will be:
Kindergarten - 2nd Grade: 8:45-11:15
3rd-5th Grade: 1:30-3:15
Thank you in advance for joining us on Field Day! We are excited for another fun day in the field!
CALLING ALL 2ND, 3RD, 4TH, AND 5TH GRADERS! (2nd Posting)
On Tuesday, May 28th from 3:30-4:30 the Philanthropy Club will be hosting our annual Philanthropy Fair! It will either be outside on the blacktop or inside the gym if there’s rain. The 5th-grade Philanthropy Club students researched to help us find an organization to support. This year, we will be raising money for Paws for Patrick. To help raise money, 2nd-5th grade students can sign up to sell something at the fair. Items can be something you create or a collection from your home that you no longer need/want. Any collection needs 10 or more items. You may also sell nut-free baked goods that are individually pre-wrapped.
Participants can sell items with, at most, a group of four. However, you don’t need to be in a group. Since we have a limited number of tables, there is a possibility we will not be able to accept every student, but we will try our best! So far this hasn’t been an issue in recent years, but better to know that it’s always a possibility. Thank you for understanding! Please scan the QR code and fill out the digital application by Friday, May 3rd.
Please prepare the following before submitting the form:
- Confirmation that ALL group members will be able to participate and be at the fair (please confirm with families)
- Confirmation that at least one adult will be there with the kids at the table (At least one adult must be present at each table for the ENTIRE fair)
- Confirmation of the item you will be selling
- Confirmation that you are the only member submitting this form for your group (only ONE application should be submitted per group)
The application form is linked here.
If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to Ms. Schmidt at nschmidt@dps109.org. Thank you for helping us give back to such an important cause!
Announcements from the LMC
End of Year at the LMC
This week some important dates for the LMC were shared with your students.
- Friday, May 17: last day to check out LMC books
- Friday, May 24: ALL books due back to the LMC
This gives LMC staff time during the last two weeks of school to track down any missing books and perform a full inventory of the library.
Tournament of Books
Deerfield Public Library's 11th annual Tournament of Books continues! Students can vote as many times as they'd like, in any category they choose. Here is the link to vote: https://www.deerfieldlibrary.org/tournament-of-books/
Digital Citizenship for Parents
Digital citizenship is taught in the Library Media Center throughout the year, and we know many parents are working to encourage healthy technology behaviors at home. This 4-minute video features a discussion about the risks and benefits of current technologies from two parents’ perspectives.
Incoming 6th Grade Parents
