Windermere Family Update
Windermere Weekly Parent Update 9.13.24
Yesterday, we had our first Hawk Huddle. I absolutely LOVE and cherish this time with our students. Below, I have included information about Hawk Huddles and what they are, and their purpose. Our work this year will focus on understanding the five mindsets. Make sure you ask your child(ren) about their Hawk Huddle.
Daily, I get to visit and participate in morning meetings. This 20 minute “meeting” brings me so much joy listening to our students spend time with each other strengthening their classroom family dynamic. Each Morning Meeting includes a greeting, a sharing time, an activity and a morning message. Oftentimes, each component is tied to a grade level’s respective curriculum. Our students love this time. If you haven’t yet, make sure you ask your child about their morning meeting.
I wish each of you a great weekend.
Julie

Did you know that a group of Hawks is called a huddle, hence, the name HAWK HUDDLES! This week, we had our first Hawk Huddle with kindergarten through fifth graders. Every staff member at Windermere is helping to make these six huddles this year a success. Our focus this year is on understanding the five mindsets. Huddles are composed of students from multiple grade levels, and these groups will be the same all year and from year to year.
Our first mindset focus is on empathy. Empathy is the ability to feel how another person is feeling and imagine what it would be like in another’s position. We learned that empathy is feeling someone else’s feelings inside your own heart. It is seeking to understand and connect with others. When we use empathy, it helps us to be kind. We learned that kindness is like a muscle. It can be strengthened with practice. We have to stop and notice what kindness looks like, sounds like, and feels like so that we ourselves can practice it. What we practice regularly becomes a habit.
One strategy to try at home is to ask your child each night at dinner or at bedtime, “What did you do that was kind today?” If they are unable to come up with something, help them make a plan of something kind they can do for the next day. We talked about how even small acts such as smiling at others, saying thank you, or including friends can fill buckets and spread good feelings. Reading fiction together is also a great way to flex your empathy muscles. Stop and discuss how characters might be feeling throughout a book you are reading together. Ask your child to identify why a character might be feeling a certain way.

Start With Hello!
One way we are celebrating our District commitment to student and staff well-being is by celebrating Start with Hello during the week of September 16-20. Start with Hello is a week dedicated to making new social connections by engaging in conversation with one another to create a sense of belonging among young people. Start with Hello gives us an opportunity to practice engaging in conversation with one another and celebrating the importance of inclusive connections.
In our school community, you may notice or hear your student talking about daily kindness challenges, all of which provide an opportunity to connect compassionately and show an appreciation for new and future friends. Here are what they will look like at Windermere:
MONDAY: Meet a new friend today start with HELLO!
TUESDAY: Do or say something positive to a classmate, teacher or friend.
WEDNESDAY: Wear something that represents YOU like your favorite colors or favorite shirt.
THURSDAY: SOCK IT TO LONELINESS Wear crazy or colorful socks to school and challenge yourself to introduce yourself to someone you don’t know at recess.
FRIDAY: Windermere Spirit Day Show your school spirit by wearing school colors.
We hope you enjoy this celebration of Start with Hello in our school community.

Engaged Learner Competency and Well-Being Survey:
Dear families,
Upper Arlington Schools values feedback from all stakeholders as we strive to challenge and support every student, every step of the way. This fall, we want to hear from your students as we continually seek to improve their overall experience in our schools.
Between Monday, September 16 and Friday, September 27, all students in grades K-12 will have an opportunity to complete an online survey during the school day to provide us with information to better understand our students. Our Engaged Learner Competency and Well-Being Survey aligns with the priorities identified for our upcoming 2025-2030 strategic plan and our Profile of an Engaged Learner. Developed by UA Schools’ educators with feedback from students and teachers, the Profile of an Engaged Learner identifies the skills and characteristics that we believe will prepare students to serve, lead and succeed both now and in their futures.
Grades K-2: Students will be supported individually by teachers and school staff members as they take a brief online survey, using emoji images for their responses. The 9-question survey will cover the following focus areas: supportive relationships, social awareness, emotion regulation, self-management, sense of belonging and perseverance. You can preview the questions using the following link: Grades K-2 Survey.
Grades 3-5 and 6-12: Students will independently take a longer online survey, with age-appropriate questions based on grade band about these focus areas: supportive relationships, social awareness, emotion regulation, self-management, sense of belonging, perseverance and hope. You can preview the questions using the following links: Grades 3-5 Survey and Grades 6-12 Survey.
We are working with Panorama to administer our Engaged Learner Competency and Well-Being Survey. This survey will provide insight at the district, building and student levels to help the school counselors, teachers and administrators understand how to best support their students in their school experience. Please review the alignment of these survey questions to the competencies of the Profile of an Engaged Learner here.
It is our hope that all students will participate so that we have a clear picture of our students’ needs. If, however, you would like to opt your student out of the fall survey administration, please complete and submit this form by September 10, 2024.
As we look ahead, there will be two additional survey administrations this school year in the winter and spring. Families will receive more information, including the opportunity to opt their student out, in advance of those survey windows.
If you have any questions, please contact wellbeing@uaschools.org. Thank you for your continued support of our students and our schools.
Sincerely,
M. Denise Lutz, Ed.D.

Literacy Night:
iPad Parent Control Information
The UACS Technology department provides 2 ways for caregivers to manage screen time, review web history, manage apps and internet access after school hours. The typical built-in Apple ScreenTime and Parental controls do not work because the district manages iPads for school use at a district level - the typical consumer level settings are not available. Caregivers can review web activity and disable internet access through the Lightspeed Relay Parent Portal. Additionally, caregivers can control app access and set rules through the JAMF Parent app. Questions may be directed to FamilyTechHelp@uaschools.org.

From the Nurse’s Clinic:
Any prescription medication administered at school requires written authorization from the student’s physician as well as written parental permission. Per Ohio Revised Code, the Prescribed Medication must be received by the health office in the container in which it was dispensed by the provider or pharmacist (we cannot accept medication in baggies). Medication authorization forms and other health forms can be found on the district website at: UA Health Forms. Should you have any questions, please contact the Windermere Health Office at 614-487-5060.
Stop, Drop and Go:
Please refer to this arrival and dismissal doc for guidelines on keeping everyone safe during our drop off and pick up times.
Wireless Usage/iPhones/Gizmos:
As smartwatches become more common among students, parents have asked about settings that might reduce the risk of the device causing a distraction during school. Here are links to information about school-time settings for two devices we see here at school, the Apple watch and the Gizmo watch. We kindly ask that students use these settings. Please know we will always call you or allow your child to call you during the day, if needed. If a Smartwatch becomes a distraction, we may ask a child to keep it in their backpack.
Student Absences:
Please email windermereattendance@uaschools.org along with your child’s teacher, any student absences. For extended absences (vacations, travel, etc.) please submit a pre-planned absence form. For more information on the district attendance policy, please visit the district's attendance web page. For all medical appointments, please provide a doctor’s note.
