ORCA SOUNDINGS
June 2024 | Olympic View Elementary School
From the Desk of our Principal
Dear Orca Families,
As the school year draws to a close, I want to take a moment to reflect on the incredible journey we've had and to celebrate the many achievements of our students, staff, and community. It has been a year filled with growth, learning, and countless memorable moments. I am incredibly proud of the progress our students have made and the hard work and dedication of our staff.
This year, our students have grown so much (literally and figuratively). One of the greatest things about working in an elementary school is witnessing the transformation students undergo through the year. They become taller. They gain so many more academic skills. They develop friendships. They develop more personality. Our Orcas students are incredible and we are so proud of them!
Families, thank you for working with us! Your involvement and encouragement have been instrumental in our students' success. Together, we have created a supportive and thriving school community.
We wish you all a wonderful, restful summer. For our returning families, we look forward to welcoming our students back in the fall, refreshed and ready for another exciting year of learning and growth. For our students who are moving on, we will miss you!
Please reach out to me with any questions or if I can help in any way.
Warm regards,
Mrs. Lucero

NOTES FROM THE OFFICE
- Change to end-of-the-day transportation. Please remember to call the office before 2:45 p.m. if you are changing your student's mode of transportation home. On Monday please call before 1:45 p.m. This ensures that we are able to inform the students and their teachers in a timely manner.
- ATTENDANCE: If your child is absent from school, Washington State requires that you follow up with a note to the office within 2 school days. We can no longer accept late school notes. You can send a handwritten note with your child or you can send the office staff an email. oveinfo@ohsd.net For more information regarding your student's attendance please refer to Oak Harbor School District Policy https://app.eduportal.com/documents/view/420215
Brodt's Butterflies
Mrs. Brodt's second graders released their butterflies! They were able to see them grow from tiny caterpillars into larger caterpillars. The class watched them build their chrysalis and then emerge as butterflies! The students then released them into our school garden!
NEWS FROM OUR NURSE
Sunscreen
Over-the-counter topical sunscreen products may be possessed and used by students, parents/guardians, and school staff without a written prescription or note from a licensed health care provider if the following conditions are met:
- The product is regulated by the US Food and Drug administration as an over-the-counter sunscreen product; and
- If possessed by a student, the product is provided to the student by a parent/guardian.
What this means is that students can bring sunscreen from home and apply it themselves. They cannot share it with other students, and we cannot apply it for them. We cannot supply students with sunscreen ourselves, either. It must come from home.
End of The Year Medication
Please remember to pick up your child's medication at school by Friday, June 21, 2024. We are unable to send medications home with our students and they cannot be stored over the summer. Any medication left after June 21, 2023, will be properly disposed of. If your student has a life-threatening condition, medication must remain at school until the end of the school day on Friday, June 21, 2024.
Reminder: All health plans and healthcare provider orders are good for one school year only. If your child needs a health plan or needs to take medication during the school day for the school year 2024- 2025 (this includes any prescription, over-the-counter medications, or inhalers used at school, during team sports practices, or after-school activities), please download the appropriate form from the district website https://www.ohsd.net/Page/2126. Forms may also be picked up in the office.

Counselor's Corner
What a wonderful school year this has been! Concluding my first year at the elementary level it has been awe-inspiring to see the amazing growth students have made in learning (and in height!) :-) Not all of the learning has been in reading, writing, and math. I have had the pleasure of watching students grow in their social skills and emotional regulation as well.
In terms of social skills, I have seen students greeting each other, politely asking students if they want to play, checking on each other when they get hurt, taking turns with favorite class toys and so on! In the emotional regulation area, I have seen students who previously had trouble calming their body down using Kelso's choices like walking away, taking a deep breath, asking for a break and so on!
There are so many activities at the elementary level that make school such a fun place to be. Recently, two classrooms earned their class rewards and enjoyed a pajama and movie day. We are also celebrating the countdown to summer with themed days, like "I" for Inside Out Clothes, showcased on a big display outside the library. Our Color Run fundraiser is in full swing, featuring some exciting activities like taping Mrs. Lucero to the wall or tie-dying her clothes. I am especially looking forward to the Field Day and Color Run! If you would like to volunteer, please fill out the OHPS volunteer form in advance.
To keep the learning momentum going, encourage your student to join the Sno-Isle Summer Reading Challenge. Reading over the summer leads to greater gains in the fall. You can download all the materials here or visit the Oak Harbor Library next to the Skagit Valley College Whidbey Island Campus.
Thank you for an amazing school year, and here's to a wonderful summer ahead!
Sincerely,
Stacey Mahoney
