Kesling Intermediate School - February 2025
Principal's Corner
February 2025
Dear Kesling Parents and Students:
We hope everyone had an awesome January. Hopefully, we will continue with the moderate temperatures and weather conditions. Most importantly, let’s hope Phil the groundhog does not see his shadow and Spring will arrive sooner than later.
There are many great things going on in the month of February. During the week of February 17, 2025, eligible students in grades 6-8 will participate in OLSAT testing which indicates which students would qualify for high ability services. February continues a very important stretch in schools as we continue to prepare to help all students master the Indiana College and Career Ready Standards in Math, English, Social Studies (Grade 5) and Science (Grade 6). The testing dates for ILEARN are April 14, 2025 to May 9, 2025. Please understand that what is demanded of students on ILEARN is rigorous; however, we are confident that our students will perform well as students are working extremely hard to master the standards. The campus staff continues to rise to this challenge as we have increased what is expected out of students on assignments, projects and assessments. Together, we are confident that our students will excel on ILEARN 2025. The link to the Indiana Department of Education website for ILEARN information is as follows:
Indiana Department of Education ILEARN 2025 Information
We continue to prepare for the transition to the 2025-2026 academic year. Towards the end of February, The LaPorte Middle School Program of Studies will be shared with current sixth grade and seventh grade families through email. There will be some changes in programming at the middle school in response to the new Indiana Department of Education diplomas that will be implementing starting next school year. This information will be shared in the coming months. For our current fifth grade students, during the last week of February, the music teachers will have presentations for fifth grade students and they will then have to decide if they want to take band, choir or orchestra the first week of March as they enter sixth grade. Finally, in February, information will be sent through Skyward from Mr. Hise from LaPorte High School regarding the scheduling process and meeting dates for the current 8th grade students (Class of 2029).
As a reminder, there will be no school for students or staff on Friday, February 21, 2025 and Monday, February 24, 2025.
We look forward to our second Campus-Wide STEM Night which will take place on Wednesday, February 19, 2025 from 5:00-6:00 p.m. Please see more information in the newsletter. There are many opportunities for students to grow academically and as a person at the Kesling Campus. There is information posted on the school websites regarding all of the clubs, activities and sports. Furthermore, information can be found on student Canvas pages. We hope everyone has an awesome February.
Sincerely,
Bill Wilmsen

Dunebrook Body Safety Program
All Indiana schools are required to provide a researched based and approved Body Safety program for all students. The LaPorte Community Schools has chosen Dunebrook to provide this service. During the last week of February, students in grades 5 and 6 will be participating in the Dunebrook Body Safety program. All students should be familiar with the Dunebrook Body Safety program as this is the same program that was provided to them throughout elementary school. Please contact your child’s grade level counselor if you have any questions regarding this program.

Final Food for Thought
Final Food for Thought…The following are excerpts from a publication entitled Bits & Pieces.
The title of the piece is called “A Pitch for Success”. As we head into February, I wanted to share
the following with all parents as a reminder to enjoy the gifts that we have in our children…have
a great month of February…. Mr. Wilmsen
A Pitch for Success
Sometimes accomplishment is simply a matter of perspective. Sometimes it may need a
word or two of explanation. This was apparent in the case of the boy who received a new
baseball bat and ball for his birthday.
The youngster went to the park with his father, and proceeded to demonstrate his
prowess. He tossed the ball in the air, swung the bat mightily, and completely missed the
ball. He then repeated the throw and swing, again failing to connect. After a third swing
and miss, the boy whooped for joy and ran over to his father.
“Well, what do you think, Dad? Have you ever seen such terrific Pitching?”
