HCS News and Information -- April 1, 2025
Supe Scoop
Hornet Nation,
Whether you stayed in town or traveled for spring break, we hope the week was exactly what you needed. We are excited to return and engage in teaching and learning now through June 6 (our last day with students).
April is the month that our state testing mandates kick in. Please note that these are different than the NWEA-MAP testing we do three times a year. Our NWEA data is nationally normed, and of great use to our teachers as it provides real-time information as to where students currently are, how much they have grown, and what they are ready for next.
The state testing (M-STEP, PSAT, SAT, Work Keys) is a measurement chosen by the legislature for a one-time accountability check, and we do not receive the results for months. Regardless, we want our learners to do their best on the state testing. This includes getting good rest the nights before testing, and eating a good breakfast at home and/or at school the day of testing. If you have any questions about the testing schedule, please reach out to your school principal.
Thank you for choosing Harrison Community Schools. In partnership and with Hornet Pride,
Judy

Larson Elementary
You don't have to go all the way to Paris to see the Mona Lisa - she's now in our front office!
Volunteering to read during March is just one of the many ways parents support Larson.
Mrs. Hughes definitely has some engaged readers during read aloud.
Hive/HS Robotics @ Ferris State University
They made it to the semi-finals and won the team spirit award!
Always a lot of tweaking, rewiring, and reprogramming in between rounds.
The robot, also known as Crash.

Kindergarten Round Up
Due to overcrowding at Larson, in February the Board of Education decided to move kindergarten to Hillside, beginning in the 2025-2026 school year. We are planning on five classrooms, to join our four preK classrooms. If you have a child entering kindergarten this year, please join us on April 10 at Hillside!
Kori Driver: Compass of Compassion
Our very own Kori Driver, special education teacher at Larson Elementary, was recognized by the Northern Michigan Alliance for Children on April 1 with the Compass of Compassion award. This award honors a teacher who has demonstrated outstanding dedication to protecting children, fostering a safe space in the classroom, and being a strong advocate for children's well-being.
Is Your Child a HS Athlete?
This is a reminder that if your child is playing a sport at the high school level, the parent/guardian must sign up to work concessions during the season. Please reach out to the sports boosters, carriejwhitaker@gmail.com, for the concessions link.
Jack Pine Division 2 Football Coach of the Year
Congratulations to Jamie Lipovsky upon receipt of this honor. In true Coach Lipovsky fashion, he accepted it on behalf of the entire coaching staff.

Important Community Event
We have a great team assembled to provide information and answer questions.
Jerry Becker is the current Director of Emergency Management and Homeland Security for Clare County. Director Becker is a former police officer and sheriff's deputy, and a current special deputy sheriff. He has also served as fire marshall, captain, and training officer for the Harrison Community Fire Department. Director Becker is instrumental in supporting our district in safety and security training, as well as our emergency operations planning.
Jim Chinavare is currently a deputy with the Clare County Sheriff's Office, and is also our School Resource Officer. In addition to completing SRO training, Deputy Chinavare is an experienced officer with __ years in law enforcement. He has been deployed in a community-oriented assignment to work in our schools. On any given day, you might see Deputy Chinavare take on a mentoring role with students: serving as a positive role model, fostering positive relationships between youth and police, helping with problem solving, and providing a safe and supportive environment. However, as a licensed law enforcement officer, Deputy Chinavare also has the training and authority to act and protect students and staff in emergency situations.
Congratulations to Mr. Long and Mrs. Thrush!

Interested in Volunteering?
Would you like to be more involved in your child's school? Do you have time during the school day or just after to volunteer? We would welcome you with open arms!
In order to volunteer, you simply fill out and submit an iChat form (linked below). This enables us to run a criminal background check in short order, to ensure the safety of all students you may come into contact with. Assuming nothing of concern shows up, you are all set to help out wherever your school may need you. The principal of each building determines the needs, and works with approved volunteers to meet those needs; some schools may have more needs than others. If you would like to view our Board Policies in regard to volunteering, please view Board Policy 4205 on our website.
Excused Absences
When communicating that your child will be absent, the following are coded as "excused" per Board Policy 5301:
- the student’s physical or mental illness (verification from a physician, physician assistant, or nurse practitioner is required after 4 consecutive days of absence for illness);
- severe weather;
- medical appointments for the student;
- death or serious illness of the student’s family member;
- attendance at a funeral, wedding, or graduation;
- appearance at court or for other legal matters;
- observance of religious holidays of the student’s own faith;
- college planning visits; and
- personal or family vacations (form must be completed and turned in at least five (5) days beforehand; see principal for form).
Updated COVID-19 Information
Based on information from the CDC and our local health department, upon testing positive, children should stay out of school until: 1) if there was a fever, 24 hours of being fever-free without the use of medicines to reduce fever; and 2) symptoms are improving. It is also recommended that a mask be worn for 5 days after returning to school. We will be following the same protocol for our staff.
The ABCs of a BOE Meeting
All Board meetings are open to the public, and are conducted in compliance with the Michigan Open Meetings Act. On rare occasions, the Board may go into closed session, but only as allowed by the OMA.
If it is your first time attending a Board meeting, you may not be familiar with the structure. Make sure you pick up an agenda on your way in, and if you intend to speak during the portion designated for public comments, please pick up a copy of Board Policy 2504, which is near the copies of the agenda. This will explain the parameters of the public comment portion of the agenda.
As you observe the Board conduct its business, the agenda will guide you. Common agenda sections are as follows:
- Opening of the Meeting (welcome, Pledge of Allegiance, additions/corrections to agenda/minutes, building instructional highlight, any other "organizational" items)
- Consent Agenda (items for approval that do not require a roll-call vote, and without objection from a Board member, can be considered all together)
- Non-Consent Agenda (one or more items that require a separate roll-call vote, such as budget approval)
- Informational Items (examples include resignations, other presentations, etc.)
- Public Comments (3 minutes each, Board members do not respond during the 3 minutes so that each speaker gets their full time; after, Board members may, but do not have to, pose questions or make statements)
- Communication (Superintendent's Report - includes subject matter of public comments; any other Board communication)
- Discussion Items (other matters any Board member may choose to speak about; may relate to public comments but not required)
- Adjournment
Within 8 business days of the meeting, minutes are posted on our website.
See below for information on our next meeting.
