Hello Sunset Lake Families,

Welcome to a new school year that will be different than anyone has ever experienced!

We have been hard at work setting up safety protocols throughout Sunset Lake's building and our entire campus. We have safety measures with our transportation, food service, technology, specials, classroom instruction, and everything in between.

Our Sunset Lake protocols have been recently updated on the VCS Companion Document found here: VCS Companion Document. The Sunset Lake Protocols link is found on page 9.

I thank you for your patience and understanding as we work out our class assignments and final details for our soft start.

In this SMORE edition, you will find our Sunset Lake soft-start plan that follows along with the message Superintendent Keevin O'Neill shared in a district message today.

Due to finalizing our in-person student counts, we have had to wait to finalize our class assignments. I understand how waiting for this information can be frustrating but we are needing to ensure balance classrooms as we plan for this unusual year of in-person and online instruction. Students attending in-person will be contacted by their child's teacher next week and introducing themselves and sharing more information about your child's new school year. Students attending VCS virtual will also be hearing from their Vicksburg Virtual Teacher next week.

Two very BIG ROCKS for Sunset Lake this year to share out:

First of all, we want to share out that our theme for this school year is Sunset Lake Home of Heroes! The perseverance of our staff, students and families through a global pandemic has demonstrated awesome Super Powers!

Our second big rock will be a focus on cultural diversity and acceptance. Our Sunset Lake community of leaders will be spending this year learning more about diversity of others and learn how to help bring a stronger acceptance to people of all ethnic backgrounds.

At Sunset Lake our mission is We are Lifelong Learners and Lifelong Leaders. We are committed to living our mission each day by bringing a positive attitude to learning new things and always trying to model leader behaviors. This year will require all of us to have grace and patience as things may change during our school year. As Leaders I believe we will utilize our Habit #6 of Synergize and Be Better Together!!

Each month we will be reviewing the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People through our Leader in Me process. The month of September is all about a short review of all 7 Habits and then our following months we "dig" a little deeper to learn more about each habit.

Sunset Lake operates on the research of positive behavior supports. Research shows that positive responses to students behaviors brings about positive behavior with our students. We also believe in helping our students become responsible citizens by leading their learning and taking ownership of their choices. We use SWIS-School-Wide Information System, that is our data warehouse for us to track and review our student incidents (referrals) during each school day. Our Student Code of Conduct can be found on our website. If you would like a hard copy of our Student Code of Conduct, please contact our office at 321-1550.
