Happenings in the Math Department
Eighth grade Algebra students have been strengthening their number sense as they convert arithmetic sequences to linear functions. Students are discovering how these concepts are closely related through analyzing patterns in sequences and graphing linear functions.
By tackling real-world applications, students are recognizing and representing sequences and functions in multiple forms, such as equations, graphs, and tables. It’s an exciting journey that will help build a strong foundation for the new and challenging mathematical concepts ahead!
Reading Classes Learn about Jolabokaflod
Mrs. Balin's Reading classes visited the library in early December. Ms. Grosso introduced the Icelandic tradition of Jolabokaflod, where books are exchanged during the season of Yule. The students spent time finding the just right book to 'gift' another student in the class while saying, "Happy Jolabokaflod" to one another when exchanging. The students are ready for a snow filled reading day!
PTA Volleyball Night
LM PTA sponsored a volleyball night that was well attended. Rotated through games in co-ed teams. Everyone had a great time! Thank you for coming out students! PTA, thanks for a great event!
Dream It Design It MICU Competition
On Thursday 12/5, the combined gifted support classes from grades 5-8 attended the MCIU Dream It Design It event at the MCIU in Norristown. This year's theme was engineering accessibility.
The students heard from the special guest speaker (and LM graduate) Andy Burnstein, who is the founder and CEO of "accessible pharmacy" a pharmacy specializing in making pharmaceuticals accessible for all, with a focus on mobility, vision and hearing needs.
Each student was given a task card with an identified accessibility problem for which they needed to create a prototype solution. The groups built their prototypes and brought them back to the school where they will create a product pitch to be submitted to the MCIU for voting. Results of the county wide vote will be released next month!
