Extended Learning Program (ELP) Update
The district's ELP services are intended for the most advanced students who need additional challenging learning experiences beyond the general curriculum. The criteria for qualifying to receive ELP services is outlined on the district website, also linked here in the elementary section: https://www.iowacityschools.org/academics-programs/extended-learning-program. Information regarding acceleration requests may also be found on the district website. The ELP department is currently working to update our identification policy, which will be updated on the website prior to the 2024-25 school year.
This spring, we will be looking at the data we have from district assessments. Students who show high potential will be provided an opportunity to complete an additional ability assessment to help make the determination of eligibility to receive ELP services in 4th grade during the 2024-25 school year. We will email families of 3rd grade students who are recommended for further testing no later than Friday, March 1. For this year, families of 3rd grade students and 6th grade students may also request that their child(ren) take the additional ability assessment. If you would like to request that your child take the additional assessment, please complete this Google Form. Requests must be received no later than 11:59 p.m. on Friday, March 8. Details of the testing timeline will be shared with families of students who will be taking the assessment.
If your child is currently in 4th grade, they will be reviewed next year in the fall of 5th grade. If your child is new to the district (in 3rd-6th grade) this year and has not been screened for ELP services in the Iowa City School District, you may request that your child take the ability assessment. We are excited about the expansion of ELP services that are being planned for the coming school year, and will be sharing more information in the coming months.
