Muckleshoot Tribal School
April 2024
Chief School Administrator
MTS wishes Muckleshoot Tribal Schools students and families a wonderful, exciting, and restful spring break from April 1st to April 5th.
We want to highlight two significant events as we gear up for a busy April.
On April 18, 2024, we have the Smarter Balance Assessment Night, a crucial opportunity for families to learn about this school-wide assessment.
On April 22, 3024, we celebrate Earth Day, Families Day, which is dedicated to raising awareness about environmental issues.
We look forward to seeing you and your family at these important events.
Last Day of School Date Change:
- June 17, 2024, will be the last school day for students. Reason: There was a weather closure for all MIT Government Offices on January 11, 2024. Questions, please contact the MTS front office.
Director of Teaching & Learning
Nearly all students in grades 3-12 will participate in Washington’s Smarter Balanced Assessment this May. Join us in the cafeteria at MTS to learn more about how your student can best prepare for the exam. There will also be trivia and prizes! We hope to see you there!
The ACT exam will take place on April 10th for certain students. Make sure students have a healthy breakfast and get a good night’s sleep if they are taking the assessment.
This month’s plant teacher is stəgʷad. Salmonberry teaches us about interconnectedness. Your student(s) will be learning from Salmonberry all through the month of April and singing Berry Picking Song. The siʔiʔab gʷədᶻadad (Honorable Teaching) for April is qwuʔ (Water). Students will be learning from Water all month long.
Our Mountain to Sound programming continues to expand. Our first grade students will visit Vashon this month, and 3rd grade went up to Crystal Mountain in March. We are so excited that now our 1st, 3rd, 5th, 8th, and HS students are having meaningful learning experiences on the Land.
On March 23, Muckleshoot Tribal Schools hosted a hiring event. We had approximately 60 candidates tour the school and learn about our mission and vision. We were impressed by the high caliber of candidates who chose to spend their Saturday with us.
Elementary
It has been a busy time over in the elementary building! In early March, we had several volunteers come into our classrooms and read to our students during our Read Across Muckleshoot week. Our students and staff had a wonderful time dressing up during the various theme days.
Third graders visited Crystal Mountain to participate in science and skiing lessons and had a fantastic time!
This month, our fourth graders are looking forward to swim lessons at Health and Wellness and first graders are looking forward to their visits to Vashon Island for the Mountain to Sound program. It is going to be a busy but exciting April!
Secondary
March was a long and busy month for secondary students at MTS. On March 6th, Student Support Services hosted a transition fair where students and families were able to explore their options after high school. We are thankful for all the organizations that took time out of their days to share information and opportunities for ALL of our amazing students.
Our 8th-grade and high school students had the opportunity to visit Crystal Mountain and reconnect with the land. Students returned from long days in the cold snow, full of smiles and stories of their experiences and learning.
In classes, students were learning about DNA, how to write proofs, and how to write paragraphs with strong evidence. Next month we are going to jump into our No Place for Hate partnership in full force. Students are planning activities, and teachers will be teaching lessons that promote kindness and fight negative words and actions.
Next month, we are excited to host a pop-up event in partnership with the Special Olympics. This is an event for ALL students to celebrate togetherness and fitness. We hope to see as many of you there as possible.
