Grade School News
Welcome Cassie Duprey!
Fourteen qualified candidates applied for the Grade School Principal position. The administrative team narrowed the list to four based on the candidates’ written applications. On Friday a group of administrators, teachers, staff, and parents interviewed four candidates. I am confident three of the candidates could have been successful Corbett Grade School principals, but the committee unanimously agreed that one of those three stood head and shoulders above the rest. I am very happy to announce Mrs. Cassie Duprey as the next Corbett Grade School Principal. She will officially take the reins July 1! Congrats to Cassie. I know she will be great.
Cassie comes to Corbett Grade School from Corbett High School, where she has been the assistant principal since 2020. She has been a teacher and school administrator for 21 years, first in Friars Point, Mississippi and then in Oakland, California before making her way to Corbett, Oregon. Cassie began her career teaching 4th, 5th and 6th grades at Friars Point Elementary in the Mississippi Delta as part of Teach For America, followed by a year teaching Politics at the University of California, Santa Cruz. She then spent five years as a 5th and 8th grade math teacher at KIPP: Bridge College Preparatory in Oakland. She came to Corbett in 2011 and taught Algebra and U.S. History for eight years in the high school. During that time, Cassie earned her administrative credential and began to support Corbett High School’s work-based learning program, student scheduling, and incomplete recovery while continuing to work as a classroom teacher. Originally from Everett, Washington, Cassie has a bachelor’s from Whitman College, a master’s degree in teaching from Concordia University, and a certificate from the School Administrator Program at Concordia University. In her free time, she loves to travel with her family, read, garden, and Stand Up Paddleboard (SUP). Both of her children attended Corbett Grade School, and she is grateful for the excellent staff, multiage classrooms, and place-based learning opportunities that make Corbett special.

Books And Donuts/Pizza: Middle School Readers Take Over Portland!
The Corbett Middle School book club - Books & Donuts, or B.A.D. Readers - has had a great year of reading, talking about literature, and sharing in some of the region’s finest deep fried delights. This year we’ve read and discussed Chains by Laurie Halse Anderson (average rating of 4.6 donuts), The Bean Trees by Barbara Kingsolver (4.3 donuts), Into The Wild by Jon Krakauer (4.1 donuts), and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin (rating below).
The last book was chosen as this year’s ‘Everybody Reads’ title by Multnomah County Library and Portland Literary Arts. Continuing our annual tradition, we followed up our reading of the novel with a trip into Portland for some book-themed food and the author talk. For dinner this time, we went with fancy pizza on the inner east side, since a pizza shop in Koreatown, Los Angeles features frequently in the book. After eating, we discussed and rated the book. Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow earned an average of 4.5 donuts slices of pizza. Wow!
The main event was held at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall, and was attended by hundreds of adults and students from high schools around the county. It was a great chance for our students to experience an author reflecting on her work, her life, and what it means to be a writer in today’s world.
And now, it’s on to the next book, and to the next batch of donuts!
CAPS NEWS
CAPS 8th-Grade Trip to Guanajuato
CAPS went on it’s 8th-grade trip to Guanajuato, Mexico this past March 15th. Mark McIntire and Abby Steichen accompanied sixteen eighth-graders from CAPS on a week-long adventure to Guanajuato City. The students were able to fundraise for much of the costs, and truly took advantage of a trip to Mexico’s original capital, a tourist destination for Mexicans, as well as those traveling from distant countries.
The students spent their nights with host families where they practiced their Spanish, ate traditional Mexican food, and experienced the local culture. The students also took Spanish classes each day at the Escuela Mexicana, which is an international language school. When not taking classes, they took trips to art museums, practiced their own interpretations of the art they saw, went on tours of historical locations around Guanajuato, and practiced their Spanish first-hand. They purchased food, bus tickets and navigated the community, as well as participated in the incredibly colorful and playful Día de las Flores. The students truly took advantage of all that Guanajuato has to offer. It was a fantastic trip!
High School News
The Corbett High School robotics team, Cardinal Dynamics, completed their regular season as part of the FIRST Robotics Competition with their final tournament on Friday 3/22 and Saturday 3/23. The team worked hard hoping to secure a spot in the PNW District championship, but came up short by just a few places. However, this season will count as one of the team’s most successful with one tournament win (Clackamas Academy 2/29-3/1) and their highest regional placing ever. The team finished the 2024 season ranked 53 out of 148 teams throughout Washington and Oregon. If you would like to learn more about the team email Mr. Goude zgoude@corbett.k12.or.us or visit the team website corbett.k12.or.us/robotics.

Health Room News
We are coming to the last few weeks of school and different classes will have picnics, end of the year celebrations, and field days. We know that balloons are part of happy events, but ask that all balloons are helium. Corbett schools have an allergy alert of “No Latex Please,” due to individuals on campus with severe latex allergies. A person with an airborne allergy to latex can react severely by walking into a room with balloons or where balloons were popped. We actively try to protect our students and staff that have airborne latex severe allergies.
A special note of appreciation to Cheryl Reams, School Health Assistant. Cheryl applied to an AED donation program through Providence Heart Institute’s Basecamp Prevention + Wellness Program. A big “Thank You” to Providence and Cheryl for helping keep our students, staff and community safe. Corbett High School was a recipient generously chosen for an AED through their AED Donation Program. Corbett High School received a Phillips Heart Start AED in March. The AED has been installed in the High School Commons. We now have AED’s located at:
- Corbett Grade School Office
- Corbett Grade School Gym
- MPB

Staff Highlight
Debbie Heltborg
Interview with Michelle Carter Smith
Special Education Assistant at CAPS
*Focuses on caring for & educating children
with disabilities or special needs
Milk River, Alberta, Canada was Debbie's place of birth and she was one of seven children born to her parents. There were TWO sets of twins in the family! Debbie was the third child and is not a twin. The first set of twins were born just after her, and seven years later, another set of twins were born. The funny thing is, Debbie's mom was told she would not ever be able to conceive. There are 11 years between the oldest and the youngest and at one point, there were five children in the house under the age of four. Debbie's mom stayed home full-time until all the kids were in school. Her dad was a customs broker, and her mom joined him as a customs broker when she went back to work. Both parents have now passed.
It was a busy childhood for Debbie as she lived with her family in a small farming community of about 500, located near the U.S. border. Some of her classmates traveled as far as 70 miles EACH way to attend school. All of the "country kids" had a plan in place to stay with one of the "city families" if the weather did not permit them to travel back home after school. Debbie was a "city kid" who attended the same school from grade 1-9, then traveled 15 miles to attend the local high school. Debbie played softball, basketball and also ran track and field throughout her childhood. She describes herself as extremely shy and quiet as a child and says she loved to be at home, cooking, cleaning, baking, reading books and helping her mom with what was needed. Her first job at age 10 was delivering newspapers both in Canada and just across the border in Sweetgrass, Montana. Debbie says she literally walked across the border to do her entire route, thinking nothing of the responsibility or the distance. Debbie loved the outdoors as a child and still does today. She has always been a hard worker, taking on numerous jobs in her youth. She babysat, did her newspaper deliveries, cleaned houses, waitressed, did yard work, etc. After graduating high school, she then attended college in Rexburg, Idaho for two years, earning an associate's degree in arts and sciences. Just before graduation, she attended a community celebration and met her future husband. He asked her to dance on a bet, and the rest is history! This year they will celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary. After marrying, they moved back to the Portland Area where her husband Jeff was finishing school. Debbie did not have a work visa, so was supporting Jeff with his work and school and was doing volunteer work. After the visa arrived, Debbie got a job doing administrative work for various companies. She later worked for Legacy Children's Hospital as an administrative assistant for 17 years. Before taking the hospital position, she went back to school to pursue a degree in Elementary Education. She realized that was not the path she wanted. In 2000, she gave birth to her only child, a son named Seth. When Seth was four years old, Debbie decided to go part-time with work. She began working at home doing medical transcription as well as on-call work for various other things. In 2011, Debbie decided to work as an administrative/financial assistant for the church that they attended. In 2017, they decided to open a restaurant called Killer Burger. Things went great for several years and then Jeff's job as a respiratory therapist was keeping him too busy and so they sold the restaurant. In 2022, Debbie began working for the Corbett School District. She was yearning to work for a school and be close to their Corbett home. They had built a home in Corbett in 2008 and Seth graduated from Corbett High in 2018. Debbie was hired as a special education assistant and has been with the district ever since. She has worked both at CAPS and the high school and now she is back at CAPS. She feels very blessed to have the opportunity to work with the kids in the special education program. Debbie and Jeff love being in the outdoors and enjoy kayaking, hiking, golfing, biking and traveling. They are considering a trip to Iceland and Ireland this year to celebrate 60/40. Her birthday and their anniversary!
