Achieving High Reliability Schools Level 1 Certification: A Commitment to Excellence at LMS
At Legg Middle School, we are continually working to create a safe, supportive, and collaborative environment for all students, staff, and families. This year, we are focused on achieving Level 1 certification through Marzano’s High Reliability Schools (HRS) framework. HRS Level 1 emphasizes establishing a safe and collaborative culture—a cornerstone for academic success and student well-being.
What Is HRS Level 1?
HRS Level 1 certification ensures that schools have systems in place to promote safety, foster collaboration, and provide support for teaching and learning. Schools striving for this certification focus on:
- Clear behavior expectations for students and staff.
- Open communication and collaboration among stakeholders.
- Transparent systems for feedback and improvement.
- Strong support for teachers to excel in their instructional practices.
How LMS Is Working Toward Certification
Our staff has been taking intentional steps to meet the high standards required for HRS Level 1 certification. Here are some highlights of our efforts:
- Expanding Stakeholder Engagement: We’ve implemented new ways to gather feedback from parents, students, and staff. This ensures that everyone has a voice in shaping our school environment and programs.
- Promoting Cardinal Pride: Building on our core values of being respectful, responsible, and safe, we’ve refined our behavior expectations and recognition systems to encourage positive interactions and a welcoming school culture.
- Celebrating Success: We are developing consistent mechanisms to recognize the achievements of our students, staff, and community members.
- Strengthening Communication: Regular updates, surveys, and meetings help ensure that our families and staff stay informed and connected to the school’s vision.
Why It Matters
Achieving HRS Level 1 certification is more than just a goal; it’s a reflection of our commitment to excellence. By fostering a safe and collaborative culture, we are ensuring that every student at LMS can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.
We’re excited to share this journey with you and invite your continued involvement. Together, we are making LMS a place where every student feels valued, supported, and inspired to reach their full potential.
We need your feedback! Please take a moment to fill out this brief survey.

From the Media Center
Dear Parents, Guardians, and Students,
I hope this letter finds you refreshed from break and ready to embark on a new year full of possibilities! At Legg Middle School, we are committed to fostering a love for reading and lifelong learning in all of our students. As the school librarian, I wanted to take a moment to share some opportunities and resources available to support literacy, academic success, and personal growth.
The Importance of Literacy
Reading is not just a skill—it’s a gateway to imagination, critical thinking, and future success. Studies show that students who read regularly build stronger vocabularies, improve their writing, and perform better in all subject areas. Whether your student prefers fiction, nonfiction, graphic novels, or audiobooks, every type of reading builds comprehension and confidence.
Exploring Different Types of Reading
We recognize that every student has unique interests and learning styles, as well as special needs considerations. That’s why we encourage:
• Traditional Books – Perfect for those who enjoy the time honored tradition of turning pages.
• Graphic Novels and Comics – Great for visual learners and reluctant readers.
• Magazines and Online Articles – Ideal for quick reads and staying updated on current events.
• Audiobooks and E-books – Excellent for readers on the go or those who benefit from listening to stories, such as those with shorter attention spans. The speed of an audiobook can be adjusted depending on comprehension. Following along with a paper copy can help with retention.
Free Resources for Students
Our local public libraries offer free access to audiobook and e-book apps, such as Libby and Hoopla. These apps allow students to borrow books directly to their devices anytime, anywhere. All they need is a library card, which is free, and an adult must facilitate the easy application process.
Additionally, I offer free tutoring support during the school day, for students who need extra help with reading, writing, or any other subject. Whether they need one-on-one assistance, help with missing assignments or help preparing for a big test, I am here to help students feel confident and prepared.
How You Can Help at Home
We encourage you to make reading a shared experience. Discuss books your child is reading, visit the library together, or listen to audiobooks as a family. This is a great way to pass the time during car rides and during chore time. Your enthusiasm for reading can make a lasting impact!
If you have any questions about our library programs, would like to learn more about academic support, or need assistance accessing free digital resources, please contact your students’ school counselor or teacher.
Thank you for your support in helping our students succeed!
Warm regards,
Miss Scheidler
