Important Safety Notice Regarding Dangerous TikTok Trends
Dear Seaside Middle & High School Families,
We are writing to make you aware of a dangerous trend that has been circulating among students nationwide — and unfortunately, we have seen incidents of it here at our school as well.
Some students have engaged in unsafe behaviors influenced by social media challenges, including:
Inserting graphite from pencils into Chromebook charging ports, which can cause short circuits, overheating, smoking, and permanent damage to the device.
Placing foil from gum wrappers into electrical outlets, which can result in electrical sparks, charring of outlets, and electrical shorts.
Both of these behaviors are extremely dangerous. Not only do they pose serious risks of electrical shock, burns, and potential fires, but they also result in costly damage to school property and compromise the safety of everyone in our school community.
We ask all parents and guardians to please speak directly with your child about the dangers and consequences of these actions. It is important that students understand that such behaviors are not only unsafe but also illegal. Incidents of this nature will be referred to our Student Resource Officer and the Juvenile Department. In addition to school-based consequences, depending on the severity of the incident, the following criminal charges may apply:
Criminal Mischief II (ORS 164.354) – Class A Misdemeanor: Damage to property in excess of $500.
Reckless Burning (ORS 164.335) – Class A Misdemeanor: Recklessly causing damage through fire or explosion.
Recklessly Endangering Another (ORS 163.195) – Class A Misdemeanor: Engaging in conduct which creates a substantial risk of physical injury to another.
Arson II (ORS 164.315) – Class C Felony: Intentionally starting a fire or explosion that causes damage.
Our top priority is to maintain a safe environment for all students and staff. We appreciate your partnership in reinforcing this message at home. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us
Thank you for your attention and support.

SHS Spring Spirit Week
We Need Your Help!
Dear SMS/SHS Families,
As we move through the school year, we’ve noticed a drop in students consistently using their bus badges when getting on and off school buses. We'd like to take a moment to clarify the importance of this system and ask for your support in helping students stay on track.
Some students have mentioned that they were told badges are no longer required—this is not accurate. Badges are still expected to be used by all riders, and its part of the guidelines shared in our Student Handbook. In fact, using a bus badge is a helpful habit that prepares students for future use of public transportation systems. If a student has lost their badge or their badge no longer works, they can quickly and easily fill out the Lost/Damaged Student Id form on the front page of the school websites or below.
We are asking for your help with the following: Please remind your student(s) to use their bus badge every time they get on and off the bus. This applies to all grades and is an important life skill.
Lastly, a benefit your student may notice: when more students use their badges, bus loading and unloading goes faster and more smoothly—making the ride shorter and more efficient for everyone.
Thank you for helping us reinforce these expectations and supporting safe, reliable transportation for all students!
Warmly,
SSD Transportation Department

Thanks for all the delicious meals and the good vibes—especially on everyone’s favorite lunch day!
SHS Key Club Grants more than $15k to local nonprofits
Seaside High School Key Club awarded more than $15,000 to two local nonprofits during a Schnitzer Cares event Tuesday at the Astoria Golf and Country Club. The group granted $10,000 to BACA (Bikers Against Child Abuse) and $5,787 to The Harbor. This is the third year that SHS’s Key Club has partnered with Schnitzer Cares, and was the Pacifica Project for seniors Jlyn Casco and Kysa Gilbert.
Along with advisors Kerri Boutin and Ann Susee, several Key Club members attended the annual event. Jordan Schnitzer and Governor Tina Kotek spoke to the assembled young grantmakers and thanked them for their leadership and fundraising. Schnitzer Cares has been in operation for 28 years, and currently has 44 Oregon schools involved in the program. More than $1.1 million dollars was awarded to 476 nonprofit organizations this year.
SMS Leadership Receives Gold Council Award
We're thrilled to share that, at the annual spring conference, our SMS leadership class received a Gold Council Award from the Oregon Association of Student Councils — a recognition given to the top middle school student councils in the state! This honor reflects their incredible work in supporting our school, community, and one another throughout the year. Way to go, team!
Hispanic Parents Night
SMS Builder's Club
A huge shoutout to our amazing Seaside Middle School Builders Club members who volunteered at the Sunset Empire Park and Recreation District’s Community Egg Hunt on April 19th! Students had a blast guarding the eggs, helping with face painting, selling concessions, and pitching in with setup and cleanup. Special thanks to Zoe Manhire, Special Events Coordinator, for working with our students to plan and create such a fun and successful event. We are so proud of our Builders Club for their energy, teamwork, and community spirit—thank you for making a difference!
Seagull Spotlight Event Honors SHS Thespians
The Seaside High School Drama Department inducted 16 new Thespians into its Troupe and honored several students with awards. Since restarting the Troupe in 2019, more than 60 actors and crew have been inducted into Troupe #2977. This year’s new inductees include seniors Indira Daggett, Kasey Danielovich, Korben English, Rene Montez, Beth Van Uitert, and Elie Wright. Juniors include Sam Cox, Talya Fink, and Carver Terrell. Sophomores include Tanner Como and freshmen include Rian Dewey, Thelma Ivy, Maple Jackson, Kylee McElroy, Liv Miller, and Grace Roberto.
In addition to the inductions, three Thespians were honored with achievements. Sophomore Aria Taylor and Senior C. Michael Moore were awarded the “Honor Thespian” designation for more than 600 hours dedicated to theatre arts. Senior Ayuanna Bolin was awarded the “National Honor Thespian” award for more than 1200 hours dedicated to theatre arts. Combined, all current members of the Thespian Troupe have dedicated more than 11,000 hours to theatre during their high school careers.
Bolin was also given the “Best Thespian” award for her time and dedication to SHS’s drama department. Bolin has served as Troupe President for two years, a director for this year’s high school one act, and as choreographer for 5 musicals.
Multicultural Night Sucess!
We are thrilled to report that our Multicultural Night was a resounding success! The evening was filled with vibrant dance performances from around the world, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of our community. Attendees delighted in a diverse array of delicious cuisines, sampling flavors from various countries. The musical performances added an enchanting atmosphere, while the kids enjoyed a fun-filled carnival with games and activities.
Guests also had the opportunity to explore Henna designs and learn the art of Origami, making for a truly interactive experience. Additionally, community resource tables provided valuable information and connections. Thank you to everyone who participated and contributed to this beautiful celebration of diversity! We look forward to more events that bring our community together.

Fentanyl Awareness: Keeping Our Community Safe
This school year, we have prioritized educating our students about the critical dangers of fentanyl. Through engaging initiatives like Fentanyl Safety Night, a powerful presentation by A Song for Charlie, opioid awareness embedded in our Health curriculum, and thought-provoking homeroom activities, our efforts have focused on raising awareness and promoting student safety.
In honor of Fentanyl Awareness Day, students are creating posters that highlight the risks associated with fentanyl, how to access support and resources, and how to recognize warning signs of fentanyl use. These posters will be displayed throughout the Seaside community to spread awareness beyond our school walls.
This collaborative effort underscores our commitment to equipping students—and our entire school community—with the knowledge and tools needed to stay safe and informed.
Together, we can make a difference in ensuring the well-being of our children and fostering a supportive environment where awareness and prevention are paramount.
Join us in continuing this important conversation and empowering our youth with the tools to make informed choices.
Below are resources to help continue with these conversations.
Thank you for your support and dedication to keeping our students safe.

If you are driving yourself to school you need to stop by the Main Office and fill out a parking permit application so that you can receive your student parking permit sticker.
Student parking is only permitted on the East/Mountain side of the building. Students are not allowed to park in the staff parking lot on the ocean side of the building.

Bus Information
Please click the LINK here for bus stop information.
If you cannot find your bus stop or believe it is incorrect, please contact our transportation supervisor at 503-738-7150 or cpeters@seasidek12.org.
Please be at your bus stop 5 minutes earlier than the scheduled pick-up time. Bus times vary due to traffic levels. Bus route information is posted on our school website. See link above.
During the 2024-2025 school year we will again be using our bus badge program. This program increases the safety of our students on our buses by allowing us to know who is on the bus at all times and at which stop they exited.
Here's how it works. Student ID Bus Badge utilizes an ID attached to a student’s backpack or a lanyard which communicates with the Bus Pass scanner located on the bus. Students will scan the badge as students enter and exit the bus instead of having to take paper pencil attendance.
If you prefer to opt your bus rider out of this program please complete this form. It is important to note that students who opt-out of the electronic monitoring portion of the program will still need to show their Student ID Bus Pass to ride a district school bus. Their badge will just not have an active barcode to scan.
Lost/Damaged Student ID?
Have you lost or damaged your Student ID? No problem! Simply fill out the below form to request a replacement.
Bus Note FAQ's
Q: My student needs to ride the bus home with another student today - what should I do?
A: We must have requests in writing, preferably no later than noon, and are unable to accept permission over the phone. Instead you may:
Send your student with a note to give to the Main Office in the morning with the date, the name of the student your student will be riding with, and your contact information.
OR
You may email the request to sgiess@seasidek12.org or kbrenden@seasidek12.org If you need further assistance please call the main office at (503)738-5586.
Student Attendance/Pickup
If you will need to pick up your student before the school day ends, please send them in the morning with a note to the Main Office. That way we can have your student ready for pickup at the time you need them.
To avoid receiving the automated attendance call if your student is absent, please contact the Main Office as soon as possible at 503-738-5586
The Main Office hours are Monday – Friday 7:30 am – 4:30 pm.
Student Medications
If your student has medical issues or needs to take medications during the school day, we need to hear from you ASAP! The medications will need to be delivered to the main office by the parent/guardian (NOT the student). We will ask the parent to complete forms for each medication your student takes. Even if your student has medication they need to keep with them during the school day i.e.: inhaler or epi pen or if your student takes an over the counter medication ie: cough drops or Advil, we need to have a parent signed form on file.
For our 7th grade students: Please be aware that all 7th graders need a Tdap booster as part of their required immunizations to attend school. If your student has not yet had that booster, please contact your primary care provider for this immunization. Immunization exclusion day comes in mid February where all students must be up to date, or have an exemption in place, to avoid school exclusion.
Please contact the Main Office at (503) 738-5586 or the school nurse, Dani Nelson at dnelson@seasidek12.org
