MESSAGE FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT
Greetings MVCSD Community,
Students at Mount Vernon STEAM Academy have been learning from Lehman College professors and taking English courses every Tuesday and Thursday after school. These college-level courses provide a great opportunity for students who are looking to start making progress on their post-secondary education before graduation. We are so grateful for this partnership and the dedication of our students to extend their learning after school.
This week, Pennington School fourth and fifth graders received an engaging career presentation from John Elliott, a meteorologist for CBS. Students learned the behind-the-scenes process of reporting weather, and they saw the many ways that science and math are used in meteorology. Hearing from an active meteorologist was a very meaningful way for students to see how what they are learning can be applied in real-life careers. They were even filmed by Mr. Elliott. The segment will air on Saturday at 9:15 a.m. on CBS2 News.
Students at Mount Vernon High School displayed their artistic talents during their lunch period on Tuesday. Students performed songs and dances, and they were able to improve their public speaking and performance skills at the same time. Our students express themselves in a variety of ways, and this creative outlet was a great forum for them to do so.
Our Senior Spotlight Series features an outstanding Rebecca Turner Academy student, Alicia Barton. Alicia has displayed praiseworthy levels of dedication to her education, and her work is opening up amazing opportunities for her. Alicia has received accolades and awards at school, and she also received a scholarship from the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 596. She is also heavily involved in her school community as a member of the No Place for Hate committee. Alcia’s accomplishments are very impressive, and I am excited to see her academic journey progress.

Kindest Regards,
