A Message From Principal Lash
Briarwood Families,
As we begin the second quarter, I want to thank Bulldog Nation for your continued support at home. Working together, we had an amazing first quarter. Let’s stay ridiculously positive and keep that beginning of the school year excitement going all the way to 2025! We are looking forward to parent teacher conferences. Please make sure you have scheduled a time with your child’s teacher. These conferences are a great way to collaborate as we work together to help our students reach their full potential.
Important Upcoming Dates
October 17th - Parent Teacher Conferences, 4:30-7:30
October 18th - NO SCHOOL - Parent Teacher Conferences, 8:00-3:30
October 31st - Halloween Parade and Classroom Parties, 2:15
November 1st - NO SCHOOL
Conferences
Parent-teacher conferences are scheduled for the evening of Thursday, October 17 from 4:30-7:30 and Friday, October 18 from 8:00-3:30. Teachers are in the process of reaching out to families to schedule a conference with each family. Parents can request an in-person conference or Webex conference. When reviewing your child’s progress, I encourage you to focus on what your child can do and how their effort determines their success. Below is a link to a powerful video on the importance of praising children based on their effort versus their intelligence.
Also, when setting goals with your child, focus on specific academic or social skills that your child can practice and measure the results of their effort. The more they can see the correlation between their effort and achievement, the more they will succeed.
SMSD Though Exchange on Strategic Plan Action Item 4.1.3
The Shawnee Mission’s Strategic Plan Cycle II work is off and running. Action teams scheduled to begin meeting in quarter one of this year have started their work. One of the new strategy areas in this plan, adopted by the board in June, is technology. It has been a priority of the district for technology action team 4.1.3 to dig into their work immediately. This team’s work is focused on creating a developmental guide related to age-appropriate usage of technology (to include the use of personal devices) with consideration for students who may require individualized support.
This action team’s work is challenging, and they are working to thoroughly gather research and critically important feedback from our school district community. To assist in the process, a ThoughtExchange is being launched to gather community feedback. The action team has developed a question prompt that will be shared through ThoughtExchange, which allows the district to receive input through comments from the community. Individuals are also able to rate thoughts that have been submitted to provide further insight. The topic of age-appropriate use of technology, including the use of personal devices, is of great interest and concern in our community, so the community engaging in this action step process is appreciated. “We are committed to bringing forward a thoughtful recommendation to the board as early as we are able,” Dr. Schumacher added.
Fall Celebration
Our traditional costume parade and classroom parties will be on Thursday, October 31. Families are invited to the costume parade outdoors on the playground. Please plan to arrive at 2:00 on the playground and the parade will begin at approximately 2:15. Gates will be open to enter the playground at the back. There is no need to enter the building through the front door. Classroom parties will take place immediately after the parade and are being planned by the room parents and teachers. For the safety of students and staff and for students to have room to play games, make crafts and eat, visitors will be limited to the room parent and needed volunteers for the classroom parties. Room parents and volunteers do need to check in at the office.
Please review the costume guidelines below.
- Students are allowed to wear costumes to school but NO make-up or masks during the day.
- Please, no costumes with blood and/or weapons. Pirates, knights, soldiers, ghosts, and goblins can come in costume, but not armed.
- Logos, wording on shirts, hats or other apparel should be appropriate for a school setting.
- Costumes should not be insulting to others or frightening.
- Students should be able to see in their costumes.

Get your books out and your library cards ready! Read-A-Thon is coming the week of November 11th, and we’ll be reading to raise money for the Briarwood PTA!
Our theme this year is CELEBRATING DIVERSE READERS, and we’ll be reading books honoring different backgrounds and experiences. Students will participate in daily dedicated classroom reading time and lots of other fun activities throughout the week.
Students will receive a bookmark featuring original artwork. Students had the opportunity to submit designs through art class and the winner was voted on by the students. Congratulations to all of the student artists.
Stay tuned for more information about Read-A-Thon in future newsletters!

October Celebrations and Recognitions
Cooking With Kitty
Chef Kitty is a teenage girl who has a dual diagnosis of down syndrome and autism. Follow along with her and her dad as they make simple and easy to make food at home.
Jewish High Holy Days
There are several major Jewish holidays that take place this time of year, often referred to as the "High Holy Days" or "High Holidays." This includes Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Sukkot, and Simchat Torah. As the Jewish calendar is both solar and lunar, the timing changes slightly on the more commonly used Gregorian (purely solar) calendar year to year. So while the 2024 High Holy Days all happen to fall in the month of October this year and won't next year, they are always on the same dates on the Jewish calendar.
One of the biggest questions often asked of Jewish people is how to wish them a happy holiday on these important days. Rosh Hashanah is the Jewish New Year, and thus a "Happy New Year" or "may you have a good and sweet new year" is always welcome. However, Yom Kippur is the Day of Atonement, and is spent in fasting and prayer. Because of the solemnity of this holiday it is more appropriate to say "wishing you a meaningful day" or "may you have an easy fast." Above all, it is a great time to remember to check calendars before scheduling important events, as these are significant holidays to your Jewish friends and neighbors!
Featured Volunteer Opportunity and Organization
The Golden Scoop concept has been in the making since 2018. They are modeled after two successful companies centered on employing people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, they just married the two ideas!
The Golden Scoop envisions a world where people with special needs are set up for success and belong to a community where everyone’s gifts are valued. Top that off with a menu of culinarily-exquisite homemade ice creams and a signature KC coffee blend, and you’ve got an experience like no other.
The Golden Scoop's mission is to provide meaningful employment for people with developmental disabilities; to foster an environment where our employees are mentored, inspired, and equipped to succeed in their jobs and their lives; to offer amazing made-from-scratch products; and to provide an inclusive, joyful customer experience that keeps people coming back for another scoop.

Read Across America
Benita loves to read in bed but keeps getting interrupted by a whistling Tunche, a scary Supay and other spooky creatures from Peruvian lore. To the creatures’ disbelief, Benita is so absorbed by her book that she’s not the least bit scared of them. This humorous celebration of bedtime reading puts a global twist on taking the “scary” out of monsters.
