Building Resilience in Our Children
To the Parents and Guardians,
Being able to adapt is one of the most important skills we can teach our kids as we help them navigate a world that is always changing. Being resilient means more than just getting back up after a setback. It also means learning how to change, grow, and do well when things go wrong. Teaching kids to be resilient helps them not only do well in school but also handle the ups and downs of life.
How can we teach our kids to be strong?
Promote a Growth Mindset: Teach kids that problems and mistakes are chances to learn. Don't just praise the result; praise their work too. Also, encourage them to keep going even when things get hard.
Encourage kids to be independent by giving them the freedom to make choices, solve problems, and take on responsibilities that are right for their age. Giving them time and space to deal with problems on their own boosts their confidence and helps them learn how to solve problems.
Show Emotional Strength: Kids learn how to deal with stress by seeing how adults do it. By responding to problems in a calm and thoughtful way, we show them how important it is to stay calm and look for answers.
Build strong, helpful relationships: Kids feel safe and important when they have a lot of sympathetic friends at home, at school, and in the community. Helping kids talk to their teachers, friends, and family in an open way can give them the tools they need to get through tough times.
Teach Kids How to Deal with Stress: Give kids tools like deep breathing, mindfulness, and positive self-talk to help them handle stress and worry. These tactics will help them keep their feelings in check and think more clearly about their problems.
Being resilient is a skill that lasts a lifetime and gives kids the confidence, drive, and hope they need to face problems. We promise that as a school community, we will work with you to help your kids develop these traits so they can become strong, capable, and caring adults.
Thank you for partnering with us on this important journey.

Orrville City Schools, in partnership with the Orrville Police Department, is excited to announce that it will be hosting Rachel’s Challenge on October 22nd, 2024. This impactful event will feature a school-wide presentation for students at Orrville Middle School and a special evening session for the community at Orrville High School starting at 5:30 PM, with a free dinner served in the high school cafeteria. Rachel’s Challenge, a nationally recognized program, focuses on addressing the root causes of school violence, bullying, prejudice, and self-harm by fostering connection, hope, and resilience. The initiative is inspired by the life and legacy of Rachel Scott, the first victim of the Columbine High School tragedy, and encourages kindness, compassion, and positive change within schools and communities.
The evening community event will include a presentation from a guest speaker representing Rachel’s Challenge, offering strategies to enhance school culture and support student success academically, socially, and emotionally. The event is free to attend, and childcare will be available for children under the age of 12, as the presentation is suitable for those aged 12 and older.
This event is generously funded by the Turning Point Coalition and the Orrville Exchange Club, making it possible for the community to experience Rachel’s Challenge at no cost.
