Oak Ridge High School

Student Council hosted its 2nd annual Winter Formal last Saturday, February 1st. All proceeds went to the Second Harvest of Anderson County. They, along with the Snow Court, raised over $1,500, totaling to over 4,500 meals for the charity. Seniors Mark Humphreys and Lauren Schenk were crowned Snow King and Queen and contributed much of the money raised, as did the other snow court members. Congratulations to Mark and Lauren!

Senior steering will be selling carnations Monday through Thursday in the main lobby, outside the library, in the bus loop lobby and arena lobby before school, at the end of lunch and immediately after school. Flowers will be delivered to your loved ones on Valentine’s Day! Prices - $2 for one carnation or $5 for 3 carnations. Make someone’s Valentine’s Day Special!!

The upcoming week of February 10th-14th is our annual Compassion Week. As you have seen in past years, students will be passing out candy and school-appropriate toys in the morning as students enter the school. Compassion Week festivities will also include compassion card stations during lunch on Wednesday and Friday where students can create cards for their peers. The morning announcements will also be featuring a compassion quote of the day thanks to Mr. Kolodney. The Wildcats for Change has a Valentine's Day surprise in store for compassion week! This year's compassion week is sponsored by our school’s GSTA and Student Council, and we have multiple clubs/sports participating in the events. We are looking forward to a week filled with kindness and compassion!

MONDAY, February 10th, is the monthly PTSO meeting at 5:30 pm in the library classroom.

Mr. Etheridge tells of many transformations that have happened for his students who have taken on the Major Author Project at Oak Ridge High School—generally, students believe this task will be too daunting, but with many conversations with him, discover the process can be extremely rewarding. He reflects that these conversations do not happen by accident. Allen intentionally talks to his students about themselves and their lives, about what they do for fun, and what they think about when they see the world. He noted that these transformations as a writers do not happen overnight, but are based on creating a relationship that will allow students to talk openly with him as they go through the writing process. This helps students become independent, mature writers. Is it magic? No, Mr. Etheridge believes the magic he sees is the same magic that has proven effective since the days of Socrates: questioning, talking, and listening.

Freshman Seminars – February 11, 2020 – Students come with their Guided Studies classes. Coordinator – Ms. Bennewitz

High school course registration will take place February 17-28. This is when students will again report to the Auditorium with the above listed classes for one day to register for their 2020-2021 classes.

Fundraiser for clubs /sports- Open 7 am 1 pm. Cost is $5 dollars for tax registration each month, unless they have a valid Business License. The Spaces cost $12 dollars for 3 parking spaces minimum, if you need to purchase more they are $4 each parking space. $10 dollar is you have a business license or are just selling plants and vegetables. Great time to clean out your closet and make some extra money!

The Interact club of ORHS has joined forces with the TN Special Olympics annual fundraiser, The Polar Plunge, to help raise funds for our CDC Students, and all the students, which participate in the Special Olympics of the Greater Knoxville Area. The Plunge will take place on Saturday morning, February 22, 2020, at the World's Fair Park in Knoxville.

Each student that raises $55 in sponsorship is eligible to take the plunge. If we get $500 raised, then a staff member will be joining in.

Oak Ridge Schools together with the Community Coalition Against Human Trafficking will present in the Jefferson Middle School Auditorium an event ALL parents should attend to learn more about human trafficking in OUR area! This even twill be held on February 13th from 6:00 - 7:30 pm! This is a seminar you can not afford to miss!

The state ACT for juniors will be Tuesday, March 31st during the school day. Sophomores will take the Pre-ACT that day as well and freshmen will take a full-length ACT practice test. Seniors do not attend school that day.

The tests will be the Tuesday upon our return from spring break.

Students should bring their student ID, an ACT-approved calculator (the TI-89 is NOT allowed), several #2 pencils that are not mechanical, and a snack for break if desired.

Juniors with approved ACT accommodations will be notified of their testing day(s) prior to spring break as some will test over multiple days.

The dates with asterisks (**) require pre-registration so that we know to reserve a seat for you. While we are specifically targeting juniors, who take the State ACT on March 31, all ORHS students are welcome.

ACT Prep: Please join Dr. Vaughan and Coach Etheridge from 2:00-3:45 on Wednesday, February 12, in the Amphitheatre for ACT Math prep. Dr. Vaughan will take us through some high value math topics, and then we’ll take a practice test and score it. Four of our ORHS Special Olympics Athletes got the opportunity to participate in the Tennessee Special Olympics State Winter Games. They took place in Ober, Gatlinburg from Sunday, January 26 through Tuesday, January 28th. The participants were Dennis Nickence, Alex Denisevich, Christian Marquez & Laytima Willis! The all participated in two different Alpine skiing events! Dennis’ trip was cut short due to illness but the other three were able to remain in Gatlinburg and came home sporting Gold, Silver and Bronze Medals. We are extremely proud of all four of them and their accomplishments this year! Awesome job!!!

A limited number of spaces have opened up for the summer trip, and the final deadline for enrollment is February 19. Students will travel to 5 countries: Italy, the Vatican, Monaco, France and Spain in June of 2020. Additionally, 3 college credits from the University of California at San Diego are included in the cost of the trip for those students who wish to participate in the coursework. There will be 30 different styles of beds on display for customers to try. The beds are new, brand name, made to order, available in all sizes, and cost less than retail stores. In addition to beds, there will also be luxury pillows and even adjustable power bases!!

PLEASE check the tutoring schedule for your students' teachers. We are in the process of updating the schedule for second semester. Please refer to the schedule frequently as changes are being made. Students are highly encouraged to take advantage of the extra opportunities provided by our staff.

NHS Tutoring—The National Honor Society holds tutoring sessions every week. No matter if you need math help or assistance writing an essay, NHS students are here to help! Come get tutoring relief for assignments on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:15-3:45.

ORHS Senior parents, the senior class needs your help. The class of 2020 has a lot of big things planned to make their senior year special, but we are lacking money necessary to fund events such as senior breakfast or senior movie night. There is information for all ages – summer programs for current high school students, ACT/SAT prep and testing, surveys to help find a career path, and tons of scholarships ranging from local organizations to 4-year universities. The ORDTTA Senior and Junior teams competed in the UDA National Dance Team Championships in Orlando this past week. The Senior team earned back to back National titles in Hip Hip, 2nd in Pom and 4th in Jazz. They also won a partial paid bid to Worlds. The Junior Nationals team won 2nd in Hip Hop and Pom and 3rd in Jazz. These athletes worked incredibly hard and beat teams from across the country. It can't be said enough how dedicated these athletes are and how that dedication shows in their performances. The ORDTTA teams included 21 of our own Dance Cats (including my son Zender). Please take a moment to congratulate them

This is a fundraiser to help our friends in the Bahamas who were hit by the hurricane! ALL MONEY goes straight to them and the boosters will match any money made to send as a donation!

They sell for $6.00 and any additional donation is appreciated since all money goes to the Bahamas!
