Don Bosco High School
November 2024
Mission Statement
With support from families, we respect and encourage students to reach their potential
- Spiritually by developing a strong relationship with Jesus and knowledge of His church,
- Academically by igniting learning, leadership and life skills,
- Physically by learning about and living healthy habits and
- Socially by becoming active members of the community who serve others as stewards of the Gospel so they are the Light of Christ in the world.
A Season of Gratitude
There are so many things to love about November, from the falling leaves to the brisk autumn air. What I love the most about November is that it invokes a sense of gratitude and celebrates it with the Thanksgiving holiday.
As I reflect upon our school community, I am overwhelmed with gratitude for so many things. I am grateful for:
The gift of Catholic education.
The community that has sustained our school throughout the years so that we can continue to provide a Catholic education.
Our dedicated school board for its diligence in supporting our mission as a Catholic school to develop students Spiritually, Academically, Physically, and Socially.
Our devoted staff who go above and beyond in so many ways to support the development of the whole student (Spiritually, Academically, Physically, and Socially).
Our students, the Beloved children of God, for they are the reason why I and so many others joined the field of education and choose to work in Catholic Education.
Our parents and families for the support they give to our students at home and for choosing to partner with us by sending their children to a Catholic school.
I hope the month of November brings you a renewed sense of appreciation and gratitude for all of the blessings God has bestowed on each and every one of us. Wishing you all a wonderful Thanksgiving Holiday!
Blessings,
Mrs. Douglas
Every year the Church celebrates the feast of All Saints Day on November 1. Catholics celebrate this day to recognize the lives of the saints that have gone before us who inspire us to live a holy life and strive to know Jesus more deeply.
If you have been through the halls at either Immaculate or Don Bosco you may have seen plaques above each classroom door. Each classroom has been assigned a patron saint and through the year the students and teachers will learn and share information about their classroom saint. As the students move into new classrooms throughout their years with BCSS they will learn more about each new classroom's patron saint and feast day. Ask your children about who their classroom saints are and what they have learned about them so far this school year.
November 3-9 is Vocation Awareness Week
Throughout this week we intentionally pray for priests and those in the religious life. We will pray for an increase of vocations into priesthood. We will be praying for our classroom seminarian as well as other prayers to intentional pray and thank priests and those discerning the vocation.
Please thank and pray for the priest in your community. If you are interested in signing up for a week with the Bosco Vocation crucifix, please do so.
LIM Assembly November 4
Please join us for the Leader in Me Assembly on Nov. 4 in the DB Gym at 12:30 PM. We will be reviewing Habit #2 and previewing Habit #3. This is being planned by Mrs. Monaghan's 2nd graders, Mrs. Bergfeld's 8th graders, and Mrs. Rohret's 10th graders. All are invited to attend!
November 5 Blood Drive
The Blood Drive will be hosted in the Bosco gym from 1 to 6 PM.
Sign up ahead of time or call 319-296-1692.
Bosco Band to Augustana University
Augustana University in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, is hosting the 67th Annual Augustana University Honor Band Festival the weekend of November 9. Over the years the festival has hosted thousands of students from five different states as they attend workshops, clinics, and performances with outstanding music educators and directors. The festival ends with a performance in the Mary Sommervold Hall at the Washington Pavillion where the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra performs.
Band students are nominated then selected to perform with the Gold, Blue, and highly regarded Honor Band. Caitlin Wayson, Adam Blakeman, and Cain Kerr will play in the Honor Band. Addy Hyde and Kelli Schmitz will perform with the Blue Band, and Vincent Pranger and Zach Knepper will play in the Gold Band. Congratulations to these students.

Recognizing Veterans on November 11
National Honor Society invites everyone to our annual Veterans Day Assembly which will begin at 9 AM in the Saint Mary Gym. Refreshments will be served in Saint Mary Commons at 8:30 AM for all Veterans and their guests.
Sherlock Holmes the 3rd Weekend of November
The Bosco Drama Department is excited to present its fall play Sherlock Holmes by Tim Kelly. It is a highly entertaining adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s famed detective story, combining mystery, romance, action, danger, and laughter.
Alice Faulkner has letters written by a dead girl that will cause grave international problems. Moriarty wants those letters; so does Holmes. The game’s afoot! But not before the Professor’s gang has London in its grip. Only young Holmes understands the true objective the professor has in mind (too sinister to reveal here), and he’s willing to put his own life on the line to stop it.
The cast and crew of 28 Bosco 7th-12th graders have been hard at work practicing and preparing for the show which will grace the Don Bosco stage November 15, 16, and 17. Come out and support these students and take a moment to admire our beautiful new curtain! The Drama Department is very appreciative of everyone who made this purchase possible.

Van Driving Volunteers
We appreciate our parent volunteers and welcome those who want to help out! If you are interested in helping by driving a school van to school events the Archdiocese and BCSS require a few steps. Contact Dawn Kerr for driving requirements.
