Mrs. Stokes' Notes
Happy Fall!
I hope that all Chapman Families are doing well and finding enjoyment in the change of the season. While September brought a crispness to the air, it also brought many memorable moments. There were a number of highlights for staff this past month as they had the opportunity to collaborate and spend time with students and their families. The color run had over 80 participants and was a great way for Chapman families to participate in physical activity together and it was fun to see families get the chance to make connections with each other as they walked or ran the 5K to show their support for Chapman. Big thank you to the staff members who volunteered to make this event happen. We are planning on this event taking place every year. Another highlight of the month was the Chapman Chess tournament. This event brought in students and families from all over the Southern Peninsula. Chapman volunteers, students, and families were an excellent representation of the spirit of our Chapman Mission and Values.
With the change in season, I have had a number of families come to my office with concerns for their child's mental health. Chapman's youth are not alone in their grappling with anxiety and depression. Struggles like these can be increased with changes in routine and changes in daylight. I encourage you to check in with your child and reach out if you are struggling with finding ways to address your child's social, emotional or mental health needs. We can help you with a list of community resources and can also help support your child in their struggle. We are also looking for other ways that the school community might work together to support parents as they help their child navigate this.
Looking forward to October, there are many ways for families to volunteer and get involved. The parent group is devoting their efforts to getting ready for the Chapman Halloween Carnival on October 18th. They are in need of a significant amount of volunteers to help in the preparation for this event, the set up, and take down. Please reach out to the office if you are willing to donate some of your time in the next few weeks to further this effort.
Finally, I have a number of families that have reached out regarding the need for more information for jobs in the area. A significant need in our area is substitute teachers and substitute aides. While it might be out of some comfort zones, if you would like to learn more about this flexible work opportunity, please reach out.
As always, I enjoy the chances that I get to interact with students, staff, and families. My door is always open.
With Gratitude,
Mrs. Stokes
Chapman Policy for Extended Absences
In preparation for the upcoming moose hunt and other family activities. Chapman wanted to communicate their updated policy for extended absences when students are gone for 5-10 days.
First, Chapman School acknowledges the importance of spending time together as a family and the educational value that comes from traveling. That being said, when students are absent, they miss out on valuable learning that takes place within the classroom. In an effort to support your child in their absence there is a form that needs to be completed. This form needs to be picked up from the office and completed by the student and teacher and signed by the parent and administrator. The form assists in the clear communication between families and school about what is expected while the student is gone.
**For absences longer than 10 consecutive days, as per Board Policy, the student would be unenrolled. Student access to district-provided digital resources and teacher provided work will cease after the 10th day of consecutive absences. The student will be re-enrolled upon return to school.

Volunteers
All Chapman volunteers and visitors to classrooms, the lunchroom, etc. must have a volunteer screening completed. If you plan on volunteering for clubs or sports as an assistant coach or parent helper, you must also have training on concussion and sudden cardiac arrest. Trainings are linked below. You do not need a screening completed to attend Chapman sponsored events such as award's assemblies, parent teacher conferences and family activities.
