Summer Reading: Survey & Sharing Session
If you hosted a summer reading program for adults, please take a few moments to fill out the 2019 Adult Summer Reading Program Survey. Data collected in this survey helps OLIS track trends and outcomes for adult summer reading. The survey will remain open until the end of September.
In addition to sharing your summer reading stats, join the Adult Services Roundtable for the Summer Reading Reflection and Sharing Session on Tuesday, September 17 from 9:30 - 11:30 AM at the North Kingstown Free Library. This is always a great opportunity to share what your program looked like, get feedback and ideas from your colleagues and start thinking ahead for next summer!

In addition to EDI-focused continuing education throughout the coming fall and spring, OLIS will be testing out an EDI book club for interested library staff, trustees, volunteers, and friends.
Our first selection will be White Fragility by Robin D'Angelo. You can join the EDI Book Club on Goodreads and/or sign up for the face-to-face discussion on November 20 - location TBD based on interest.

National Voter Registration Day!
Sign up by September 12 to become a partner for National Voter Registration Day and receive a toolkit of free promotional materials such as posters and stickers, and opportunities for training. National Voter Registration Day is a nonpartisan, unofficially holiday celebrated on the fourth Tuesday of September. Across the country, libraries provide voter registration forms and information about voting, as well as offer computers, which citizens can use to register to vote, update their voter registration or research more information about voting. National Voter Registration Day is on September 24 this year.
Even if you miss the September 12 deadline for the free toolkit, you can register National Voter Registration Day participation until September 24!

Librarians Guide to Homelessness Training + The Public Discussion Guide
Save the date! On December 11, Ryan Dowd will join us in RI for a full-day training based on his book The Librarian's Guide to Homelessness. The training will cover why individuals experiencing homelessness do what they do, and the practical tools for resolving problems and handling difficult behaviors. Registration will open on Wednesday, September 11 - keep your eyes on the Adult Services listserv for the announcement. Learn more about the event at the OLIS CE Calendar.
In the meantime, Ryan Dowd and Emilio Estevez have created a discussion guide for The Public for libraries planning to host screenings of the film. A screening and discussion of The Public for librarians will be held on February 13 at the Warwick Public Library so save the date and watch for updates on that as well.

Summer Reading Reflections & Sharing Session
Join fellow adult services librarians to debrief about your summer reading program for adult patrons and swap program successes and challenges. You are encouraged to bring any and all materials created for your program (including marketing materials, game boards, reading logs, review templates, etc.) to share with the group. This is a great opportunity to hear what has and has not worked for your peers, receive feedback on your program and come away with new ideas. This session will also include some brainstorming for the 2020 CSLP slogan "Imagine Your Story," which reflects the theme of fairy tales, mythology and fantasy.

Addressing Barriers to Effective Communication: Sensitivity Training
How do your staff interact with patrons who have physical challenges? Are there issues when someone enters the library with a guide dog? Join Lorna Ricci, Executive Director, Ocean State Center for Independent Living, (OSCIL) in this inter-active session to learn how to communicate more effectively with your blind, vision impaired, deaf, hearing impaired and/or physically disabled library patrons. Make sure that your patrons are comfortable and confident in your ability to assist them in your library.

Trendy Technology for Adults
Trendy technology in libraries is quite often targeted toward youth, but that does not mean that adults don't want in on the fun! This session will explore program models for using trendy technology like virtual reality and makerspace equipment with your adult patrons. Dave Bartos from the Cranston Public Library will share about their Virtual Reality "V-Lab" and how they have used that technology with adult community members. Lee Smith from the Providence Community Library will share about adult makerspace programs and open maker hours at the Mt. Pleasant branch. This program will also feature hands-on time for playing with the available technology, including an opportunity to create a custom t-shirt (just byo t-shirt!)

Equity, Diversity & Inclusion Book Club: White Fragility by Robin D'Angelo
Join the EDI book club to discuss Robin D'Angelo's book White Fragility: Why It's So Hard for White People to Talk About Racism with other interested library staff. Referring to the defensive moves that white people make when challenged racially, white fragility is characterized by emotions such as anger, fear, and guilt and by behaviors including argumentation and silence. These behaviors, in turn, function to reinstate white racial equilibrium and prevent any meaningful cross-racial dialogue. In this in-depth exploration, anti-racist educator Robin DiAngelo examines how white fragility develops, how it protects racial inequality, and what can be done to engage more constructively.
If you cannot attend in person, or would like to continue this conversation online, please join the RI EDI Book Club on Goodreads.

Save the Date: Librarians Guide to Homelessness
Do you see behaviors in your library that you find difficult to deal with, like patrons bringing in too many bags? Panhandling in your library? Arguing with you and other patrons? This full-day interactive training is much more than simple “sensitivity training.” You will learn why individuals experiencing homeless do what they do and the practical tools for resolving problems. There is a special focus on patrons with mental illness and/or substance abuse disorders. After this training, you will have more confidence with patrons experiencing homelessness.
Registration will open on Wednesday, September 11.
