Matanzas High School Weekly Update
August 16, 2024
Thank You for a Great Week!
Thank you to all of our MHS Students, Staff and Parents for a great first week of school at Matanzas. From Freshmen Frenzy on Monday through our SGA Takeover before school and at lunch today, it was an amazing first week.
Matanzas is definitely growing, as we have welcomed over 2,075 students to #theship this week. We are working through our hallway traffic patterns as we are busting at the seams, and we do anticipate that we will be adding instructional positions in the next few weeks to alleviate some overcrowded classrooms. We will communicate with students and parents if any adjustments need to be made once we have new staff hired.
Welcome Class of 2028!!!

Updates - Car Rider
Thank you to all of our parents for their patience and cooperation as we work to get our students on and off campus safely and quickly. We are appreciative the Flagler County Sheriff's Office Traffic Unit, who assisted us this week with analyzing our traffic patterns around campus.
Below are some updates that we ask families to consider that will help us with expediting student arrival and dismissal:
- Reminder that we dismiss 10 minutes later this year - students are not released from class until 2:50PM.
- Parents should NOT arrive to line up in the pick up line before 2:40PM. This causes traffic to back up onto Matanzas Woods Parkway.
- If you find yourself backed up on Matanzas Woods Parkway prior to dismissal, you are advised to pull off of the roadway onto the side of Matanzas Woods so as not to obstruct through traffic on that roadway. The FCSO has advised us that to stop on that road is a traffic violation.
- We have purchased an additional bike rack which will arrive early next week, those living in close proximity to the school should consider whether their child may be able to ride their bike to and from school.
- Any parent who needs to sign their child out early must do so prior to 2PM.
Car Rider Line Procedures
All car rider traffic will enter campus through the main gate, on Pirate Nation Way. Please follow posted signs and loop through the front parking lot and drop off/pick up students on the sidewalk directly in front of the school building.
Students should not be dropped off outside of the school gates. No U-Turns are allowed on Pirate Nation Way.
To make the line move as quickly and safely as possible, please follow the following tips:
- Continue to pull up behind the car in front of you
- When you get to the sidewalk in front of the school, pull all the way up toward the flagpole until the cars in front of you stop before loading or unloading students
- Traffic is lightest before 7:45AM and after 3:00PM, these are recommended times to have the shortest wait in the car line
- At peak times our car rider line takes 5-7 minutes from the time you turn onto Pirate Nation Way until you have picked up or dropped off your child - please be patient
Drop Off and Pick Up Times
Students are allowed into the courtyard beginning at 7:40AM and are allowed in classroom buildings beginning at 8:00AM.
Conservatory Road Closed
The Conservatory has permanently closed the private road connecting Pirate Nation Way and Palm Harbor Parkway. All traffic, including car rider, must access campus by traveling down Matanzas Woods/Palm Harbor Parkway onto Pirate Nation Way.
Reminder - Forest Grove - Not a Pickup/Dropoff Area
Our neighbors have asked us to remind all parents that Forest Grove is not a designated pick up or drop off area. This area is for access of walkers and bike riders from the neighborhoods around Matanzas. All car riders should be picked up and dropped off on the sidewalk directly in front of the school, following our established traffic pattern.
Schedule Information
Students who wish to request changes to their schedule for 24-25 are able to submit this request via online form through 8/23. The link to the form is posted on Schoology, students may submit this form ONCE.
Students are to follow their assigned schedule until counselors are able to review their request. All requests will be reviewed; students will receive an email from their counselor if the change cannot be made, or their new schedule will appear in Skyward. We ask that families and students do not email or call their counselors about schedules as this slows down the process for all. Thank you for your understanding as we work to get the best possible schedule for all of our students.
Technology Fee Information
Homecoming is coming up soon! To be able to purchase a Homecoming dance ticket all students must have satisfied all debt to Flagler Schools, including tech fees.
Flagler Schools has partnered with MySchoolBucks to accept these payments. Families who have outstanding balances will be receiving emails from the Technology Department.

Student Driver Information
All students are required to park in their assigned parking space, as indicated on their parking pass hang tag. Any student who has not yet picked up their parking decal must park in the dirt lot the first day of school as all spots in the paved lot are assigned to students.
Student drivers may enter the Matanzas Woods gate between the hours of 7:15AM and 8:15AM.
Pick Up Passes
Students who have ordered and paid for their parking passes online may come to the dean's office at lunch during the first week of school to pick up their parking pass.
Parking Pass Application Information
Any student who would like to park on campus for the 24-25 school year is required to have a MHS parking pass. Students should complete the Google Form below to apply for and pay for their parking pass (students must sign in using their Flagler Schools email address to access and complete the form). Students will be required to provide a photo of their driver's licence, their car insurance and registration information and pay the $37 fee (online) to submit the form online.
Parking spaces are first come, first served and spaces are limited. The paved lot is already sold out - we will stop selling parking passes for the dirt lot when all designated spots are sold.

If your child has not yet received their device, parents must complete the online Annual Registration and required forms first. Then, students will be able to schedule an appointment with the tech office to receive their devices beginning on August 19th.
