The Owl Observer
Week of October 14
Week #14, Week of November 4th
Dear Students and Families,
Happy Week #14 WYWLA Families! Important notes are below!
It's Election Day this week! As Election Day comes and goes, let’s all remember to be respectful and considerate of each other's perspectives. Our school values the importance of leading by example, and part of that is showing respect for others, even when opinions differ. Each of us has the right to our own views, but it’s essential that we express them thoughtfully and with kindness. Let’s continue to uphold our school pillars by embracing diversity in opinions and treating one another with dignity. Together, by reflecting this in our own community, we serve as leaders in our world.
Quick Notes & Reminders
- Tuesday, November 5 is a WCPSS Teacher Workday. There is no school. WTCC students must still plan to engage in any WTCC classes or class requirements.
- Educational Absences may be approved in North Carolina Schools. Two of those types are absences resulting from religious observances and educational opportunities of a significant nature. The Wake County Board of Education Policy 6000 requires advanced permission for excused absences for educational purposes. Educational absences include trips with clear educational connections. Family reunions, cruises, weekend getaways, and family vacations may not meet the threshold of an educational absences. They are important and we support holistic wellness, but please know that those travels are not educational absences.
- Required NC Absence Monitoring In the state of North Carolina, public schools are required to take and record attendance. Public schools are required to notify families of absences. All families will receive emails and printed attendance letters when students reach 5 or more absences. This is required. Please contact your student's counselor or our social worker if you are concerned about your student's attendance.
- Please note that we have a new school nurse. WYWLA School Nurse: Ms. Valerie Harmon, RN (vharmon@wcpss.net)
- Do you need to update your contact information? Did your child miss a day of school and you need to email a note? Email our Data Manager - jbalraj@wcpss.net!
Sincerely,
Mariah Walker,
Principal

Junior Achievement Day Is November 8
Junior Achievers is an empowering program that introduces students to essential life skills, including financial literacy, career readiness, and entrepreneurship. Through hands-on activities and real-world applications, students learn valuable lessons to prepare for their futures. We do this through their program JA in a Day! During JA in a Day volunteers and mentors guide students through a full day of interactive sessions designed to immerse them in these vital skills. This condensed experience brings together key elements of the Junior Achievement curriculum, providing students with a unique, impactful opportunity to engage, learn, and grow in just one day.

Say Something Anonymous Reporting
North Carolina requires all schools to provide a secure tip line for students to report safety concerns when they’re unable to reach a trusted adult. This tool is designed to support, not replace, open communication with safe adults and is part of a broader effort to ensure student well-being. Throughout November, students will receive training on how to use this tool, which includes a brief overview, a video, and a guide on its use. Parents are encouraged to visit the program’s website to learn more about this national platform and to have conversations with their students about the importance of sharing concerns with trusted adults. Any parent wishing to opt their child out of this training should email Mrs. Walker or Mrs. Little by November 8.
Parents should review link below for general information and program notes. Please send any questions to Mrs. Walker, Mrs. Greene Flowers, Mrs. Little, or Mrs. Whitehead.
