District 30 Board Brief
April 24 - Board of Education Meeting Summary
Volunteer leaders are a strength
Dear District 30 Community,
District 30 thanked dedicated Board of Education member Mr. Keith Karchmar for his eight years of service and warmly welcomed new member Mr. Adan Galvan during this month’s Board meeting.
Mr. Galvan joined Mr. Jeff Zuercher and Dr. Stephanie Yohannan in taking their oath of office after earning seats in the spring election. Additionally, the Board elected Mr. Ammar Rizki as President and Mr. Zuercher as Vice President.
District 30 is fortunate to have a high-functioning, cohesive Board of Education that volunteers to serve our community. I always like to emphasize this, because these elected officials selflessly give their time not only to attend many meetings and committees, but to complete much homework.
Our current Board members dedicate significant time to reviewing critical documents, finances and reports, in order to make informed decisions when voting. They also attend many school functions, both in their official roles and as parents, gaining perspective about the heart of our schools.
During his parting remarks, Mr. Karchmar told the Board, “While we didn’t always agree, we always listened to each other.” This is a key strength of our Board which has helped District 30 excel. We thank Mr. Karchmar for his service while welcoming Mr. Galvan, who brings financial expertise and a passion for our schools.
Read more about them below, as well as other key items like our first annual Human Resources Department report.
Thank you for your support of District 30!
Sincerely,
Dr. Emily K. Tammaru
Superintendent of Schools
Board member farewell and welcome
Thank you to Keith Karchmar
The Board honored outgoing Member Keith Karchmar for eight years of dedicated service during the meeting, which was his final day on the board after opting not to run for re-election this spring.
His time on the Board has been integral to the district, joining as plans were gaining momentum to build the new Maple School and district offices. He was part of the Board that created an effective plan to lead the district through the COVID-19 pandemic, with a focus on maintaining the integrity of the learning environment for students and staff.
"The No. 1 accomplishment I am most proud of is the process of hiring our new superintendent," Keith said. "This is, without a doubt, the most effective board that I have had the pleasure of serving with. A lot of that has to do with the people and relationships I have with everyone on the Board, and certainly having Emily as our superintendent has been phenomenal due to her leadership style, and her transparent and effective communication skills."
Both of Keith's children attend(ed) District 30 schools, with a son who is a sophomore at Glenbrook North, and a daughter who is in seventh grade at Maple. We thank him for his responsible and selfless years of service to District 30 students, staff and taxpayers.
Welcome to Adan Galvan
The Board of Education swore in Adan Galvan during its organizational meeting that focused on transitioning him to his new role.
Adan is a seasoned investment operations and portfolio management executive with over 20 years of experience. As Chief Operating Officer of Ativo Capital Management, he oversees investment and trading operations, guiding technology transformation, process optimization, and regulatory compliance for $2 billion in assets. He is also a chartered financial analyst (CFA) and financial risk manager (FRM) designated by the Global Association of Risk Professionals (GARP).
Adan holds a master of business administration from Loyola University Chicago and a bachelor of arts in psychology from Rice University.
He is a Northbrook resident and father to preschooler Mira, at Willowbrook, 4th-grader Avani at Wescott, and 6th-grader Soren at Maple. He also served as the 2022-24 Wescott PTO Treasurer.
"I chose to run for the District 30 Board of Education because my background gives me a unique perspective on the challenges ahead for school systems, particularly regarding technology and AI," he says. "Additionally, as a parent of three children with varying needs, I am inspired to contribute to the continued improvement of an already excellent district."
We welcome him to the Board!
New Board terms and roles
Following their re-election this spring, Mr. Jeff Zuercher and Dr. Stephanie Yohannan were sworn for their new terms on the Board of Education, along with newly elected member Adan Galvan.
