The Wayland Union School board met on Monday, August 12th, at the Administration Office for their regular meeting.

Presentation/Reports
Governance Team Good News
- Becky Hohnke shared that she is welcoming a foreign exchange on Wednesday. Pete Zondervan shared that he has been working on painting interactive activities on the track at Dorr Elementary courtesy of their student council.
Report from July 8, 2024 Curriculum and Technology Committee Meeting
- Pete Zondervan shared the discussion surrounding the drama class being offered at the middle school. There is also a new lockdown system being installed for the safety of our staff and students. The meeting also discussed the end of the year data. Lastly, Mr. Zondervan shared that SWIS information has been extremely helpful with monitoring behavior and keeping consistent behavior interventions.
Public Comment
Erin Stepek announced that she will be running for the Board of Education this Fall.
Administration Reports
Assistant Superintendent of Finance and Operations
- Leslie Wagner shared our current revenue vs expenditures report. Our numbers are consistent with where we were last year. Operational updates include the completion of the roof at Pine Street, the soccer press box received new paint and flooring, the tennis courts were refreshed, the high school track was repainted, safety film is being installed on classroom windows, and the bus wash installation is nearing completion. The financial department has officially closed on the purchase of the new administrative office, the design phase is already in process. They are also preparing to transition to new finance software in September. The transportation department is excited to implement a morning shuttle from the HS to the MS to help reduce traffic.
Assistant Superintendent of Instructional Services
- Teresa Fulk shared that the district ran 4 summer programs. The first one was our experiential learning program which provided hands on learning through unique field trips. The district also offered our standard summer learning program for K-8th grade and our credit recovery program for HS students. The final summer program was Kids Read Now, which is close to hitting 4,000 books read this summer. Staff PD is well underway, including Capturing Kids Hearts for staff members who are new to the district.
Superintendent
- Tim Reeves shared that he is excited to welcome all staff members back next week. He also invited the board members to join the district for breakfast at the start of the all staff PD day next Monday. He thanked the board members for meeting with him individually. Last Friday, he was able to meet with a Senator, who was eager to hear how schools were doing. Lastly, Mr. Reeves shared that the district has a meeting with the Gun Lake Tribe to produce a joint press release regarding the casino revenue sharing.
New Business - Discussion Items
New NEOLA Policy 2246 and revised Policy 2266
- New regulations went into effect on August 1st, 2024. The new regulations focus on all forms of sexual discrimination. The updated policy also provides more flexibility within the district. The new policy has simplified the process and matches similar investigation processes currently in place within the district.
Schedule of Rates
- Leslie Wagner shared our facility usage rates for the 2024-2025 school year. In addition, the cost of breakfast and lunch were added for accounting purposes, breakfast and lunch will remain free to families this upcoming school year.
Annual SBL Loan Activity Application
- Leslie Wagner shared that the application allows us to take out loans if need be.
High School Doors - Security Project
- John Huyck shared that a few doors at the HS are needing to be replaced for the security of our students. The replacement covers the door and the framing needed.
Myrtha Pool Alternative
- Tim Reeves shared that we are in the construction design phase of the pool. The board was presented with two different options for the pool construction; concrete and tile (traditional) or steel and rubber vinyl (myrtha).
MASB Delegate Assembly Representatives
- Norm Taylor, Becky Hohnke, and Pete Zondervan volunteered to attend.

Board Topics
2024-2025 School Year Focus
- Tim Reeves shared that the district would like to remain consistent with the previous goals set in place due to the administrative role changes. Additionally, we need to start planning for the new version of the strategic plan because we are entering year 4 of the 5 year plan.
Board Member Comments
Janel Hott loved following the adventures of summer school. She enjoyed seeing all the learning and trips that were happening. She also mentioned that she enjoyed meeting with the Key Communicators prior to the board meeting.
Pete Zondervan shared that he liked the new look to the G&W.
Becky Hohnke shared that she's excited to see that the MS rolled out a new no cell phone policy. She also mentioned that she loves the excitement brought on by this time of year.
Jeff Koon shared his appreciation towards the maintenance department for all the great work they did this summer.
Theresa Dobry mentioned that she also enjoyed the new look to the G&W. She also clarified that all board members were in compliance with Superintendent evaluation training.
Dan Cassini and Norman Taylor were absent for the meeting.
The meeting adjourned at 8:04 pm.
