Parent Survey - YOUR RESPONSE NEEDED by July 15!
Each year, the San Diego Met as an independent study school is required by state law to gather input from parents and families about your experience with our school. This process includes a parent survey that is linked here, which we are asking all Met parents/guardians to complete by July 15, 2024. This year, the state of California was late in providing the relevant online platform and tools for this process, and that is why we are asking for your input over the summer in order to meet our state deadline. Please take just a few minutes to complete this survey, which includes only 7 quick questions.
In addition, we are asking all students to take a different survey at this Student Survey link. Please encourage your students to take this survey by July 15. THANK YOU!
First Day of School - Wed, Aug. 7!
We hope you are having a wonderful summer! We are at the halfway point of the summer break, so please mark your calendars for our first day of school on Wednesday, August 7. As part of our Met tradition, the first three days of school, August 7 to 9, are our Week of Welcome (WOW)! All students will experience community-building, fun activities and workshops, introductions to new programs and opportunities, and the chance to start their internship search. During the three days of WOW, the school day will start at 8:30am and end at 1:15pm. Please plan accordingly for pickup.
For other important dates, the 2024-25 academic calendar is linked here.
Thanks for an amazing 5 years, Ms. Suzana Valis!
We send our best wishes to our registrar, Suzana Valis, who after 5 years at the Met, will now be joining the team at University City High School. Thank you for all you contributed to our community, Suzana! You leave behind a lot of good relationships and happy memories.
Free Meals this Summer!
Stay Nourished this Summer with Free Meals, School Pantries and SUN Bucks
This summer, schools, YMCAs, military sites, public libraries, parks & recreation centers, and other neighborhood organizations are turning into meal and nutrition hubs, offering free breakfast and lunch to children and teens in the community.
Along with tasty and nutritious meals, the summer meal sites offer nutrition education resources, reading activities for children, and food benefits for families to purchase groceries.
• Free Summer Meals for 18 & Younger
The Summer Meals Program runs until August 2 at convenient locations across San Diego. Children do not need to be San Diego Unified students to participate, and there are no registration requirements or forms to complete.
For a complete list of summer meal locations and hours, visit sandiegounified.org/food.
• School Pantries & Distribution Sites
Families can also access fresh produce and pantry items through the Feeding San Diego School Pantry Program, including distributions at Lincoln High School, Pendleton Elementary School, Porter Elementary School and Rosa Parks Elementary School.
To find food distributions hosted by Feeding San Diego, visit feedingsandiego.org/find-food.
• SUN Bucks
Combined with the traditional summer meals, the new California SUN Bucks program is helping families buy food during the summer break. Families will receive $40 for each eligible child to buy groceries for June, July and August ($120 total).
Eligible families will receive SUN Bucks on a card mailed to their home. Families can use SUN Bucks just like a debit card to buy fruits, vegetables, meat, whole grains, and dairy at grocery stores, farmers markets, and other places that accept CalFresh EBT benefits. SUN Bucks does not affect immigration status.
Together, these efforts aim to help ease the burden of rising food prices during the summer months and ensure kids have access to healthy food when school’s out.
Enrollment Inquiries
We still have spots available for the 2024-2025 school year! Interested families may email rfung@sandi.net to request a visit to the Met and to meet with Principal Fung about enrollment. Thank you for helping us spread the word to other families who may be looking for the personalized educational design that the Met provides.
Summer Hours for SD Met Office
The Met is on Summer Break, and our office will be staffed intermittently. Summer hours are by appointment only. Please email Principal Fung at rfung@sandi.net with any questions or to schedule an appointment.
For new students and families, completed enrollment packets can be placed through the mail slot of our office door in K203.
STUDENT ALERTS
Summer Mental Health
SD Met has been informed that EXTENDED summer hours for Wellness Together mental health services will be available for the students/families in San Diego Unified School District. Our mental health specialist will be available to be seen virtually from July 1st - August 9th on Mondays only.
Please reach out to Principal Fung at rfung@sandi.net if you would like to be connected for services.
Yearbooks!
Thanks to all our students and families who purchased a yearbook! Yearbooks will be delivered around July 31, and will be distributed to all returning students during our Week of Welcome at the start of the Fall 2024 semester. Seniors will be getting their yearbooks based on prior arrangements with our yearbook advisor, Kathy Baker. The reason for this timing is that we have always coordinated with Jostens (the yearbook company) to submit our final yearbook pages closer to the end of the school year in order to capture some of the great events that happen in April and May, and thus create a more comprehensive yearbook. Since we are such a small school, Jostens supports us in doing this, as opposed to regular schools, where yearbooks must be finalized in March. This does mean that students have to wait through the summer before receiving their yearbooks, but we believe that the purpose behind this is worthwhile. We look forward to distributing yearbooks in August!
Summer Work Permits
The main website for work permit information is here.
As the Met is closed over the summer, all work permits are currently being processed through the steps linked above.
Working minors who have not graduated from high school need work permits for their new jobs, even through the summer months. A work permit is needed for every job.
The San Diego Unified School District issues work permits for minors residing within the district boundaries and enrolled in district schools. During non-school periods (summer and spring break), minors may have their work permits issued by the Work Permit Office.
1. Complete and print an application for a work permit: Form CDE B1-1
2. The application must be complete including your parent/guardian and employer signature and date. It is necessary to include the social security number.
3. Submit the work permit application to the work permit office at your home school site, if open, or CCTE Office.
4. Please allow 3-5 days for the processing of the work permit.
If you have questions, please email Andreanna Murphy, CCTE Head Counselor at amurphy@sandi.net or Dawn Marino, Work Permit Technician at dmarino@sandi.net for assistance.
Work permits expire one week after school starts and minors who are still working must renew their work permit.

Books and Materials for Summer Classes
Please make sure you know when your summer class starts. The 1st 5-week session starts June 3rd, the 8-week session starts June 17, and the second 5-week session starts July 8th. It's every student's responsibility to get their books from the bookstore and be ready to start their class on the start date.
Please look on your MySDCCD student portal and confirm the classes you are enrolled in for summer. You can click on the Course Number and get to class details. There you can see what books or materials are assigned to the class. Go over to the bookstore and see a customer service attendant (near the bookshelves). You should have your class information handy so they can identify the books/materials you need. Then take your books/materials to the cashier and tell them you are a San Diego Met student and give them your Mesa ID#. All books and materials are paid for by the Met. You should do this as soon as possible.
If you have any questions about Mesa College, please email Jason Moravec at jmoravec@sandi.net.
