December 2024 Updates
Wishing you a joyful holiday season and a wonderful start to 2025!
As we end the year, we want to extend our thanks for your interest in learning about the work of the Literacy Essentials and MAISA's partnership with Michigan Learning Channel (MLC). This work helps to bring the Literacy Essentials to life through the MLC/PBS literacy broadcast series, Read, Write, ROAR!

Kalamazoo & Livingston RESA Literacy Leaders Learn About Read, Write, ROAR!(RWR)
RWR as a resource to support coaching...
Thank you, Katy Clark (KRESA Literacy Consultant/Instructional Coach) and Dr. Melissa Usiak (LRESA Assistant Superintendent/MSU Associate Professor), for inviting Annie to join colleagues from Kalamazoo and Livingston to talk about Michigan Learning Channel and Read, Write, ROAR! In both settings, we discussed ways it can support coaches in their day-to-day work.
At Kalamazoo's December Coaching Collaborative, we had a chance to do an overview of resources and also dig into how the Grades 4-5 resources used to plan the series and the resulting lessons could support teachers with tools to teach multisyllabic decoding lessons.
At Livingston ESA's meeting with 35(a) funded coaches, there was an informal, choose-your-own-adventure style presentation to spread the word about MLC. In particular, we looked at "snapshots" of the different Read, Write, ROAR! series and did some exploration to discover lessons to share with educators.
Thanks for this opportunity to share these no-cost resources that are aligned to our #MichiganLiteracy PreK to Grade 5 Essential Instructional Practices! Please reach out if you would like Annie's support for your group! (aspear@gomaisa.org)

Detroit PBS Neighborhood Model: Touchpoints + Relationship-Building = Success!
HighScope evaluation shows Read, Write, ROAR! supports caregivers!
To determine whether the DPBS model and the Michigan Learning Channel series, Read, Write, ROAR! PreK to Grade 3, was making an impact, HighScope Educational Research Foundation (HighScope) worked in partnership with Detroit PBS to conduct a "mixed-method evaluation to learn more about the implementation and early outcomes of the Neighborhood Model from August 2023 to August 2024. Because of Detroit PBS's established engagement with the Brightmoor community, efforts were made during all phases of the evaluation process to capture the perspectives of caregivers living in the Brightmoor community."
This study provides valuable information about what is working for families and some guidance for how to provide future support for to make implementing Read, Write, ROAR! more successful.

HighScope findings warrant praise for RWR PreK - Gr. 3 Educators!
Read the testimonials and consider who you want to tell about Read, Write, ROAR!
Caregivers were interviewed and surveyed as a part of the HighScope evaluation. While we work to continue to demonstrate how Read, Write, ROAR! can be used at home and in community settings, we can rest assured that the content is solid due to it being connected to Prekindergarten and Grades K to 3 Essential Instructional Practices in Early Literacy. We can also feel confident that PBS (and, in turn, Michigan Learning Channel) are trusted resources!
