UND NSPA Monthly Communiqué
February 2021, Issue 8
Happy Chinese New Year!
February 12, 2021 celebrates Chinese New Year, the year of the Ox. The Ox, the second animal in the Chinese Zodiac, is known for being intelligent, reliable, hard working, and humble. Individuals born this year are described as having calm dispositions, logical thinking, and potential for great leadership. In Chinese culture, the ox is highly valued for these positive traits that are often directed toward agricultural purposes. Have I just described the North Dakotan profile?
As I write this, North Dakota is making national and international headlines for its quiet leadership systematically vaccinating its residents, bringing the number of COVID19 hospitalizations to low levels, and allowing social venues to operate at fuller capacities. North Dakota is modelling a prosperous, new normal for the new year.
Let us celebrate the Ox! I hope this new year signals promising directions for all of us at UND and, in particular, for our students who are competing for scholarships in the national and international arenas. May their quiet leadership that champions a systematic, persistent, and optimistic strategy serve them well.

Tell me a bit about what inspires you?
My inspiration comes from those who are closest to me. My parents, sisters, and dearest friends each have shown me that love and support are the greatest gifts that you can give to someone. It is because of these remarkable people that I have been able achieve my goals, and it is their daily support that motivates me to pursue a career that serves others. Through these individuals I have learned that even my most outlandish goals are within grasp when I have others striving with me.
Why did you apply for the Rotary Global Grant Scholarship?
I have had many interactions with Rotary throughout my life. From Rotary sponsored track meets to adapted playgrounds, Rotary has been incredibly present in my community. So, when Dr. Yee Han Chu introduced me to the Rotary Global Grant Scholarship, I was incredibly eager to apply. Once I began the application process, I became even more invested as I began to learn more about the intricacies of the scholarship. This scholarship is rooted in community involvement and personal growth, both of which are very appealing to me as a postgraduate student. These learning opportunities paired with familiarity with this organization contributed to my decision to apply to this scholarship.
Tell me about the Queen Margaret University Occupational Therapy Program. What will you study there and what will your internships look like?
Queen Margaret’s Master of Occupational Therapy Program integrates academic work with and clinical practice. It employs diverse learning perspectives including learner responsibility, active participation, collaboration, autonomy, and learning as a community. During the program I will study in various specialty areas of occupational therapy in the classroom and in my clinical placements. Throughout my time at Queen Margaret University, I will complete two 6-week clinicals, one 8-week clinical, and one 14-week clinical, all of which will accumulate to over 1,000 hours of experience. These placements can take place anywhere in Scotland, and over the duration of my clinicals, I will be working under the direction of accredited occupational therapists.
Who are great candidates for the Rotary Global Grant Scholarship?
The first essential characteristic of a Rotary Global Grant Scholarship candidate is an ambition to study internationally for graduate school. In addition, the candidate must be aspiring to study in one of six areas which include: peacebuilding and conflict prevention, disease prevention and treatment, sanitation and hygiene, maternal and child health, education and literacy, or community economic development. Finally, the candidate must have a dedication to service. Whether this is reflected in their volunteerism, or in their future goals, they must have tangible examples of how they can commit to measurable and sustainable change in their community.

Erin Morin Interviews Ashly Hanna, 2019 and 2020 Udall Scholar
The Udall Foundation awards scholarships to college sophomores and juniors for leadership, public service, and commitment to issues related to Native American nations or to the environment. In 2021, the Udall Foundation anticipates awarding 55 scholarships of up to $7,000 each. The Udall scholarship honors the legacies of Morris Udall and Stewart Udall, whose careers had a significant impact on Native American self-governance, health care, and the stewardship of public lands and natural resources.
Erin Morin, a pre-med student from the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa, interviewed Ashly Hanna about the Udall. Below are Erin's questions:
What is the Udall Undergraduate scholarship?
Who can all apply to this scholarship? Is it just limited to Native Americans?
To apply for this application, what do I need to complete?
Where do I find quick Q and A's?
What does the application look like? What takes place at the Udall orientation?
If I applied and didn't get accepted, what are the benefits to applying?
What makes the application difficult?
What do you think are common mistakes that students make in their applications?
Do the Udall themselves look at the application?
What do Udall readers look for in a strong application?
Do you have any advice on the essay?
Do you choose articles that the foundation already has on Morris and Stewart Udall?
Do you have to do anything after you accept the scholarship and already attended the orientation?

Where do you see yourself in 10 years:
Quite a lot can happen in 10 years. Quite a lot can change in 10 years. I hope, in that time, I have had the opportunity to complete a second graduate program, potentially law school. I hope to have been able to explore more of the world whether it is to teach English abroad, work for an international NGO or non-profit, or volunteer. I hope to have started a career with the UN in some function regarding human rights.
What do others not know about you:
Others may not know that I absolutely love ice cream and would eat it for breakfast, lunch, dinner if I could. Sometimes I do. BANANA is my favorite.
