Utilities and file management.
This flyer is on utilities you can use and file management.
Utilities
A utility is a program that performs a certain task and a series of utilities make up a system software. They are not regarded as applications themselves because most are rather simple and will only perform very specific tasks. Three most common utilities are File converters, Virus scanners and security and accounting. File converters are used to save file's in different file types. Virus scanners scan all the memory on your computer for computer virus' that will cause harm to your data and computer. Security and Accounting check ID, passwords and keep a record of network activity.
File management software
This is provided as part of the system software. It performs the following tasks; File/Folder Organisation, Backup Copy Creation, File Compression and Defragmentation. File/Folder Organisation is used to create, copy, rename, delete and move files/folders. Backup Copy Creation is used to secure the backup copies of work that is made. File Compression is used to compress files/folders before storing or sending them over a network. Defragmentation each time a file is saved using windows OS it puts the data anywhere that it can find space on the hard drive. After a while the whole hard drive becomes a mess and files, folders and even programs will be scattered all over the hard drive. This will reduce access time of the hard drive because it will not have a specific area for the computer to look to find the certain files it is looking for not only delays access time but also wastes more space than is required. Defragmentation software tidies up the surface of the hard drive so that files can be quickly accessed and you use less space on your hard drive.
Peripheral Drivers
What do peripheral drivers do?
Peripheral drivers that are attached to your computer will need software to make them work properly. Printer is a good example of a peripheral drive, if a certain driver isn't installed then the printer may not be able to print out certain things like envelops. Peripheral drivers provide communication between the device and the computer they also convert instructions from the software into a form that the devices can read and understand. They allow the device and computer to work properly together and they also can produce an error message when they are not work coherently. Finally the drivers tell the computer what the device is capable of doing.
Where can you get the drivers from?
There are many different ways on obtaining peripheral drivers here are the most common ways on getting them. Sometimes the device you plug into your computer has a system called plug-and-play then it will install all the drivers needed for the device to work properly with your computer. OS can come with some drivers so you will not need to find the drivers required. Disks are sometimes used to hold the drivers so you will need to install from disk before using the device. Some people will create backups of drivers on there hard drive so they can just easily and quickly find and re-install the drivers from there. Most drivers can be found on the manufactures website and you can download them directly from there. There are also driver websites that hold lots of drivers for lots of devices so people can quickly find the one they need and download from there.
