Welcome to Week TEN!
Principal's Message
Happy Monday, Lakewood Families!
Welcome to week TEN of the school year! Our inaugural Trunk or Treat this past Friday was a truly epic event, and I want to extend heartfelt thanks to PTA President Mrs. Mahajan, PTA 1st Vice President Mrs. Haque, and PTA Treasurer Mr. Herkner for teaming with me to organize such a stellar community gathering. My heart is still smiling from seeing our families’ engagement, the creative trunks, costumes, and hearing the joyful sounds of our children during the parade and trunk-or-treating! Also, thank you Mrs. Gottesman for planning and executing a “healthiful” Mental Health week for our scholars, staff and community-much appreciated.
Congratulations to the Mrs. Sharmila Kaldone family, and Mrs. Stacey Severe family, winners of “Most Creative Trunk” and “Best Treats Trunk,” respectively! Huge thanks to all 25 families who participated by decorating their trunks – your efforts made this event a fantastic success. We welcome your feedback to make next year’s Trunk or Treat even better, so stay tuned for a survey soon!

Maryland Emancipation Day
1 November 1864, marked a pivotal day in Maryland’s history when a new state constitution freed all those held in bondage within its boundaries. The decision made Maryland one of the earliest states to abolish slavery – a full year ahead of the 13th Amendment. Emancipation Day in Maryland is celebrated annually on November 1st. This year marks the 160th anniversary of the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in Maryland.
Lakewood Community SY25 Master Calendar (Table Form)
Community: Lakewood SY25 Master Calendar (Table Form) This is a live comprehensive calendar for the entire school year. We will continue to make updates as events are added. This link is from our Community Playbook - your comprehensive source of Lakewood Elementary information. I hope this helps in knowing what is happening at Lakewood, as well as supporting schoolwide programs. Please note PTA calendar items are listed on the calendar as well.
MATH MADNESS
We’re thrilled to share that Math Madness had its first competition on Friday, October 25, 2024. Our scholars faced off against the Fifth Grade Wolves from North Woods Elementary in Plymouth, MN, and our Eagles came out on top with a score of 31-25! Way to go, mathematicians!
A big thank you to Ms. Meron for sponsoring the club once again this year and to our generous PTA for funding it. Our scholars are loving the opportunity to strengthen their mathematical thinking and compete. We can’t wait to see who they’ll square off against next week—stay tuned!
Stay up-to-date with county-wide news and updates with these weekly messages.
Emergency Contact Updates
Please take a moment to update your child’s emergency contact information in Synergy-ParentVue. This is essential for both daily operations and in case of emergencies. Below are key points to remember:
Ensure all emergency contacts are current in Synergy, including parents and caregivers.
All individuals listed as contacts must have a valid ID when picking up scholars.
During a Parent-Child Reunification (PCR) process in the event of an emergency, we will only release scholars to individuals on the contact list with proper identification.
Keeping this information up-to-date is crucial to ensuring the safety and smooth dismissal of scholars, both in routine and emergency situations. Thank you for your attention and cooperation-much appreciated!
PERSONAL ELECTRONIC DEVICES
We've noticed an increase in the use of smartwatches during the school day. Per MCPS policy, shared in our Lakewood Elementary Community Playbook, smartwatches are considered personal mobile devices and should not be on or have mobile services activated during school hours. Scholars are not permitted to make calls during the school day nor should photos be taken from personal mobile devices. Thank you for your support in helping us maintain a focused learning environment!
SGA SPIRIT WEEK

We would love to have our Lakewood parents and families celebrate this fabulous day with us! Room parents and photo class parents come into the main office, use your driver's license to sign in at the kiosk, and get your visitors badge; you may only be at the events with signing in and a visitor's sticker. Please note for safety precautions Room Parents and Photo Classroom Parents are the only volunteers that are allowed to assist with the parties. As we traditionally do Kindergarten-4th grade will be in their classroom and fifth grade seniors will be in the APR.
The parade will be from 2:15 to 2:30, and then K-5 classroom parties will be held from 2:30 to 3:00! Please note, kindergarten scholars will lead the parade this year!

Reading Night
Grade 5 Magnet School Consortium
Previously a brochure was sent to schools as well as posters, however, this has not occurred this year. So please check out the link below.
Choose Success! The Middle School Magnet Consortium (MSMC) is made up of three schools – Argyle, Loiederman, and Parkland middle schools – each of which offers an innovative and challenging magnet curriculum. Argyle focuses on digital design and development; Loiederman offers a creative and performing arts focus; and Parkland provides students the opportunity to explore math and science through aerospace technology and robotic engineering.
Admission is based upon a Choice process open to all Montgomery County students who are currently in Grade 5.
Lakewood Elementary School~ OPEN HOUSE
As you know, our Open House will take place on Monday, 11 November 2024, from 9:15 am to 11:15 am.
For those of you who may be unfamiliar with what Open House is, let me take a moment to explain. This is an opportunity for all families to visit the classrooms and observe teaching and learning in action. Traditionally, we hold this event on Veterans Day, as many families have the day off from work and can join us.
I’d like to clarify the expectations for the day to ensure it runs smoothly:
Classroom Observations: This is a time for you to observe, not participate in, the lesson unless asked by the teacher. We want to maintain the flow of instruction so scholars can continue their learning as usual.
Respecting the Learning Environment: Please remain quiet during your visit to avoid disruptions, and remember that this is an opportunity to see the class in action, not a time for individual conferences with teachers.
Arrival and Departure: You’re welcome to arrive anytime between 9:15 am and 11:15 am, but we kindly ask that you avoid entering or leaving during a lesson to minimize distractions.
The day’s schedule:
9:15 am to 10:15 am- families in the classroom
10:15 am to 10:20 am-transition (5 mins.)
10:20 am to 11:15 am-Book Fair in the Media Center (Parents ONLY)
I hope this clarifies what to expect during the Open House. If you have any questions or need further information, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Looking forward to welcoming you into our classrooms! 😊
LOST AND FOUND
Anything left in Lost & Found on Monday, 4 November will be donated to Planet Aid. Please have your child check the lost and found – there are a large number of items there.
Wootton Cluster Community News
Wootton High School's Acatonics
On behalf of Wootton HS Choral Director Keith Schwartz
The Wootton Acatonics, Wootton High School’s premier all gender a cappella group, released their debut album on all streaming platforms this Thursday 10/10/24. The album titled “don’t you understand” features professional recordings of their award winning competition set from 2024. The album is now available to listen to on Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, and all other music streaming services. In addition to the album, the group has produced a music video for the three songs. That video can be found here: https://youtu.be/2IuTIZtGaSI. The Acatonics are very excited to represent our entire Montgomery County community, and more specifically, our Wootton Cluster with this huge achievement. This is the community that raised them, supported them, and fostered their love of music. They are so appreciative of your support and hope that you will continue to support them with your song streams and views! The endeavor of competition season and recording an album is expensive. As they prepare for their 2025 competition season, please consider donating to them using this link: https://mcpsmd.schoolcashonline.com/Fee/Details/75210/354/False/True. Any amount helps and goes a long way. They are planning on representing our community this year in both Tennessee and in New York. You can also follow their year on Instagram using the handle @woottonacatonics or on Facebook as Wootton Acappella. Questions or bookings? Please contact the Wootton Choral Director, Keith Schwartz, at Keith_A_Schwartz@mcpsmd.org.

Planet Aid
Please donate your gently used clothing and shoes. You will see the yellow bin near our entrance to the parking lot. This is a positive way to contribute to the environment and community. Partnering with Planet Aid makes it all so easy! Lakewood earns 10 cents per pound and will use this money for scholars and staff. Planet Aid accepts clothing, shoes, and other textiles (for example, bedding, towels, and curtains). This means that there is no need to separate items based on their condition. Even items that are stained, torn, or frayed can be recycled, so drop off your worn-out items, too! The only articles of clothing we cannot accept are those that are dirty, wet, or moldy.Thank you in advance.
