Team Berlin Update 3
August 19th, 2024

Week 2: September 6, 2024
Sandy Spring Field Trip
This week students received a letter to take home and a permission slip sharing our upcoming 6th grade Team Berlin trip to Sandy Spring. The purpose of the trip is for students to get to know each other and to have some team building and bonding time.
Team Berlin will go on their adventure on Wednesday, September 25. We will be gone all school day. Permission slips and money should be turned in to Ms. Trenkle; She will collect it during Geography class. Any questions about the trip should be directed to Ms. Gathers, our assistant principal, or Ms. Trenkle.

Organizational Tip for Students
While we do keep backpacks and other bulky bags in lockers during the day, a simple canvas tote can help tremendously as students move from class to class. Students do not go to lockers between each class (just when they arrive, before and after lunch, and after school) and they find themselves juggling their various folders, notebooks, reading books, pencil cases, school computers, and personal water bottles.
If you have extra totes or reusable bags you'd like to get out of your house, please send in to Ms. Byrns and she distribute them to students on Team Berlin.

Classroom Updates
Earth Science with Ms. Ballantine
Hi Scientists!
This week students are working on their Letter to a Science Teacher, we are workshopping the final draft in class on Friday 9/6. Students should turn in their Letter to a Science Teacher Final Draft by Monday, 9/9. Students will take Roots 1.2 quiz on Friday, 9/13.
Next week, students will be learning about the scientific method, with a focus on independent variables, dependent variables, and controls. Students will complete a "What Is a Scientist?" worksheet in class, which will help them explore the role and qualities of scientists. They will also participate in an engaging activity involving mystery envelopes. In this activity, students will use their observation skills to identify the contents of the envelopes. Thank you to everyone who has sent in paper towels and tissues for the classroom so far, it is greatly appreciated!
Roots 1.2 words:
Meter = measure (Think: thermometer, diameter)
*Cent = 100 (Think: century, percent)
*Graph = write/draw (Think: geography, telegraph)
*Helio = sun (Think: heliocentric, heliographic)
Terre = land (Think: terrestrial, territory, terraform)
Keepers: uni, bi, tri
Look for an email from Ms. Ballantine sent on 9/5 which has some more information about science class FAQs.
Math with Mr. Brown & Mr. Gawthrop
This week students worked on multiplying and dividing numbers with decimals in preparation for next week’s BOY Assessment. This coming week all grade 6 students will take their math Beginning of the Year (BOY) iReady Diagnostic Assessment from Monday, September 9th through Wednesday, September 11th in their math classes. We will use this data to make informed decisions about appropriate math courses and targeted math instruction for our students. Please encourage your student to take their time and do their best. It is imperative that students who have not returned their technology agreement do so in order to receive their device and use it during this assessment.
Attached for you is our Math Acceleration Policy.
IRecess
Students are welcomed and ecouraged to take advantage of iRecess (in my classroom) where students have the opportunity to use their recess period to complete iready assignents (especially for those without internet access at home), missing work, homeowork, and academic assistance. Available Monday-Thursday upon request.
Language Arts with Ms. Byrns & Mr. Gawthrop
Happy Friday! This week students checked out books from the school library. We also studied point of view and students practiced writing from different points of view.
Next week, we will begin to focus on sensory language. Students will also complete the MAP Growth Assessment. We will share more information about this reading assessment in the weeks to come.
On September 23rd, we will begin reading Mildred D. Taylor's Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry. A few students have brought in a copy. If each student can have their own copy, they will be able to bring them home to keep up with the required reading. Thank you to those who have sent in an extra copy to help meet this goal.
Amazon: Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, Mildred D. Taylor
Thank you to our mystery donors who purchased the Artemis Fowl series and to Ezra's family for the new graphic novel from a popular author/illustrator for our classroom. If you'd like to help keep our classroom library full you can visit our classroom wishlist. Most titles are based on student book requests or topic interests.
Things to ask your 6th grader about ELA:
- How's your reading going? What are you currently reading? (Remember that students should be reading for 20 minutes every evening!)
- What is the difference between 1st and 3rd person? Which point of view is your book written from? How do you know?

Geography with Ms. Trenkle
We are off and running in Geography! This week students set up their Geography Binders, took their Oceans and Continents Quiz (and received their score back), set up and logged into their Aspen account, and helped to make our giant world map for the classroom!! Phew! We have been busy!
Binders: For Geography, we set them up together and all students will leave their binder in the classroom on their class period shelf. Students may take any papers from their binder at any time and put them in their red folder to take home, to share with parents/guardians, or to study.
First Quiz: Our class averages were outstanding for our first quiz of the year on the oceans and continents. The lowest class average was 93% and the highest was 97%. Way to go! All quiz scores were shared with students the day of the quiz and the scores have also been entered into Aspen.
Aspen: All students set up their Aspen account in Geography class on Thursday. Aspen is where students (and parents) can access grades and receive academic feedback. All students logged into their Aspen accounts. The log in information was taped to the inside of the student agenda so that they can access the website and login information at any time. Please have your student show you and practice logging in!
Giant World Map: Geography class wouldn’t be complete without a world map! Students are helping to create our world map. We will use it as a resource for our class, add our daily trivia answers to it, share postcards sent to us, and follow a global trail each advisory, logging it on our map! Ask your student which tile they made for our map!
Next week we will dive into our Geography curriculum with vocabulary and map skills, particularly the use of cardinal directions, using a legend, scale, and longitude and latitude. They will have two formatives next week—one on vocabulary and one on map skills. Students will work on paper copies in class and can take them home to study and practice.
