Empowering Moments
From Superintendent Smith...
Bulldog Nation recently competed in the 38th annual Pikes Peak Regional Battle of the Books Competition at Colorado College. Nearly 700 5th grade students from 78 different schools across Southern Colorado compete. Students are tasked with reading 40 novels and participating in 3 rounds of questioning. Meridian Ranch Elementary entered two 5-person teams, which is the maximum number of teams allowed.
Our Bulldogs worked through weekends, vacations, school hours, during lunch, and after school.
They also participated in monthly "BOB Breakfasts" where staff members from across the school would sponsor a book and hold discussions with 4th and 5th grade students while enjoying breakfast together. Initially, 60 students signed up to try out for a spot on the team. Both a semi-final and final round competition occurred to determine the final competition teams.
At the competition, one of our Bulldog teams received 3rd place, which is the first time we have received this accomplishment for Meridian Ranch ever! MRES Team 1 won each of their three rounds, and we are anxiously awaiting the final results to see where they finished (likely in the top 10). MRES Team 2 won two of their rounds, and overall received 3rd Place!
Congratulations to the Meridian Ranch Bulldog Teams! The efforts that have taken place by our students and the Teacher Sponsors (Ms. Gibe, Ms. Beadles, and Ms. Welch) have been exceptional! It truly was a team effort and overall collaboration that helped this awesome group represent Meridian Ranch Elementary School. The list of books that the students had to read was incredibly rigorous and it is awesome to know how well they read, comprehended, and understood all that these books had to offer. We are so proud of you and your accomplishments here. Keep up the awesome work and Keep Reading!
Falcon Zone Happenings
Thank you to everyone that attended our Dine to Donate event at Slim Chickens on Friday! I am excited to see how much money was raised for the pantry. Don't forget....Chipotle is coming up at the end of the week!
A huge shout-out and thanks to students in Mrs. Balk's and Ms. Clay's mini courses last week. Students helped to move furniture out of the pantry modular and build 10 clothing racks, enabling the expansion of the FZ Community Closet & Pantry in the near future!
Choir students attended the CHSAA show choir festival recently under the direction of Bethany Meyers.
