Max from Germany:
My name is Max and I have been living in southern Germany for my whole life. I was born in Munich on the 19th of May 2008 which now makes me 16 years old. I live in a house with my mom, dad and normally with my 18 year old sister Paula who is currently studying in the US.
Our house is located in a small town 20 minutes away from Munich. We have a yard which not only us humans enjoy but also our two cats. Right now I'm attending the 11th grade at a local high school. My favorite subjects at school are english, history and sports. What I love doing is sports and meeting friends. My favorite sport is tennis which I have been playing for twelve years now. I do play in team tournaments and solo tournaments. I’m also in a ski club. I generally love to be around and going swimming with my friends in a nearby lake in the summer. I also used to play the piano for a couple of years but unfortunately I had to give it up because it was no longer possible because of all my tennis training (I play four times a week).
Rodney from Brazil:
I decided to study in the United States because I think it’s a really good experience for anyone, you can make new friends, improve other languages, have contact with other cultures and families, live a different life than you have in your country, discover more about the universities in USA and become more mature by living far from home. I know I will live many other things in my American life, but at this time I think these are the main points that influenced me to make this choice. At the end, I think this program will be really good and important to me and my life, so I hope to conclude all my objectives, to live all the experiences I can in USA, to learn how to solve my own problems without my parents and I also hope to make the most of this period, because I know I’m a lucky guy to have this opportunity and this will be the best experience of my life.

Cool Science
Cool Science is a free and public art competition held each fall for all K-12 artists. Cool Science is a collaboration between the UMass Lowell, UMass Boston, Massachusetts College of Art and Design, University of Kansas, and Kansas City Art Institute. In 2019, Cool Science received a National Science Foundation grant that helped it expand the project beyond Massachusetts to Kansas, Missouri, and Southern New Hampshire. However, students from any location around the world are welcome to participate.
Challenge Questions
This year, we are asking young artists to answer one of the following challenge questions with a visual work of art:
1) What will your community look like when we are not using fossil fuels for energy in 20-30 years?
2) What jobs will be needed to adapt to more extreme weather?
3) How can plants and animals adapt to a warmer ocean?
Competition Winners
During this winter, we will select the best entries for display on public buses in Massachusetts and Kansas in 2024. The honorees will be recognized at our art exhibit celebrations next year.
