ABIS Happenings

Students celebrated the month of October by creating horror character-inspired value portraits. They chose one color scheme to stick to and created different tints and shades of each color to fill in their character paintings. Here's how they turned out!

The fifth-grade students in Spanish class created maps of imaginary towns and labeled them in Spanish. They then had to write four sentences about where buildings were located in relation to others. Some students combined their maps to make a big map and were super creative in putting them all together.

In addition to our "Drop Off and Pick Up" procedures shared at the start of the school year, ABIS has been working with RideWise to review and address possible areas of concern regarding our student's travels to and from school.

Every month we celebrate our students for their contributions to the classroom and their grade. Each of our grade level teams collaborate and select two overall grade level recipients who have demonstrated positive character traits during the month. This can include work ethic, engagement in class or with other students, kindness towards others, and advocacy for self and others.

In addition, each specials area teacher selects a student to celebrate based on their subject area; Art, Music, Technology, World Languages, PE/Health, STEM, etc.

The Somerset County Department of Health is providing vaccines at no cost to eligible children through the New Jersey Vaccines for Children (VFC) program. Somerset County Park Commission is offering Cabin Fever Kids, a two day program on November 7 & 8, 9am-4pm for children ages 8-12. The days will be filled with fun activities indoors and outdoors, including a special live animal presentation by Eyes of the Wild! The MYAL Travel Wrestling program is for children in 2nd * thru 6th grade and is part of the “Raritan Valley Wrestling League” whose goal is to develop wrestlers on all levels. Participants practice on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, in the ABIS School. The MYAL Wrestling team will be competing in tournaments throughout the season which runs from mid-November thru the end of January. (Travel is required for away matches (Local Somerset County Towns, + North Hunterdon, Berkeley Heights).

The Environmental Education Center at Lord Stirling Park located in Basking Ridge offers year-round programs for everyone! After-school drop off programs for kids ages 5-13 (day varies based on age group), programs geared for families to get out and explore together, and even programs for adults. No matter your interest, we have a program that can help you explore!

The Manville Food Pantry will be open the second Saturday of each month at the Faith in Action Church at 228 S. Main Street. Please make sure to bring your ID and a bag.

Feeding Hands is also offering assistance the fourth Saturday of each month at Emmanuel Baptist Church, 34 South Third Avenue. See the flyer for dates and more details.

Empower Somerset is holding two, in-person Teen Speak workshops for Spanish-speaking parents and caregivers this month. Teen Speak is an evidence-based, skill-building workshop that helps parents improve communication with their teens and aims to reduce common teen risk behaviors such as mental health concerns, sex, and substance use.
