A Message from Superintendent Carmona
Dear SPS Community,
Every year, we invite our families to participate in a survey that helps guide the decisions we make in our schools. The Conditions for Learning Survey provides valuable insights that inform our efforts toward achieving the goals outlined in the SPS Strategic Plan. As a vital member of our learning community, your feedback matters to us, and we want to ensure you have the chance to share your thoughts and ideas.
The survey takes about 15 minutes to complete and is available at this link. It will remain open from March 31st to May 2nd. Your participation is greatly appreciated, and we thank you for your time and candid feedback.
In this month’s newsletter, we’re excited to share inspiring stories about the incredible achievements of our students and staff, highlight how our CTE program is making a difference in the lives of our community members, and offer activities your family can enjoy together.
Thank you for your continued support and involvement in our schools.
With gratitude,
Dr. Ruben Carmona
Superintendent

Somerville High School Partners with Second Chance Cars
Students in the Career and Technical Education Automotive Program collaborated with Second Chance Cars, a nonprofit that refurbishes affordable used cars for people who desperately need reliable transportation to reach better job prospects. After making extensive repairs, including new tires, brakes, alignment, check engine light, wiring repairs, and detailing the used car, they participated in a donation ceremony to hand off the vehicle. The car recipient Ronald expressed his joy, saying “I’ve never really had anything like this happen to me!” Car recipients in this program report an annual 88% increase in annual income after they work with the program. Automotive teacher Mr. Richardson sees the program as a win for everyone, saying "this program gives us the flexibility to fix these vehicles when we have shop time. The cars become valuable learning tools to show the students various repairs needed on the vehicles. We are proud to be working with Second Chance Cars and allowing students to help change people's lives one vehicle at a time." Thank you to the Automotive students, Automotive teachers Mr. Raposa and Mr. Richardson, other staff, and to Second Chance Cars.

Academics Department Update
Early in March, educators from the Multilingual Learner Education (MLE) department and the Unidos dual language program attended the Multistate Association for Bilingual Education (MABE) annual conference in Springfield, MA, for a day filled with advocacy, connection and learning. During the event, Multilingual Learner Education Director Paulina Mitropoulos accepted an award on behalf of Somerville Public Schools in recognition of their dedication to Bilingual Pathways Awards, which includes the Seal of Biliteracy.
In 2017, Massachusetts passed the Language Opportunity (LOOK) Act, aimed at promoting bilingualism and bilingual programming in Massachusetts schools. Under the leadership of World Language Supervisor Dr. Lisa DaCunha, Somerville has awarded the Seal of Biliteracy to over 100 Somerville High School graduates. Many recipients of the award began their studies in the Unidos Dual Language program at East Somerville Community School, and continued their multilingual journey through World Language Department courses at Somerville High School. Together with MABE, Somerville aims to increase the number of English Learners and Former English Learners that receive the Seal of Biliteracy and will continue to stand strong in our public support of bilingualism and biliteracy for all students.
