From Mrs. Barry
Tuesday afternoon was sure exciting at Meadow Wood! At 2:58, only a few minutes before dismissal, one of our fire alarm pull stations was accidentally discharged, resulting in the alarm going off. Even though we knew it was not a true emergency, we are required to evacuate until the alarm is cleared and reset. There were a few things that happened that have resulted in some misunderstanding that I'd like to clear up in regards to this event.
As soon as the alarm went off, the officer that we share with Spring Forest contacted me over our shared radio system, asking for a status update. When I told him it was an accidental pull, he said he would come and reset the alarm. At this point, he contacted HFD and let them know they did not need to come out. Unfortunately, when he attempted to reset the alarm as he is usually able to do, the system would not accept his attempts. HFD had to be called again and asked to come out. This is why HFD's response time seemed long - they not only knew it was not an emergency, but they were called off originally. I was also asked if our officer had keys to MWE. Yes! He does! He has keys to both Meadow Wood and Spring Forest. Concerns were raised that, in a true emergency, it would take him time to have to search through his keys to find the correct one. I have spoken to our SBISD chief of police about these concerns, and he concurred. By now, that situation should be rectified. (Please note that in a true emergency, he would come in through the shortest, quickest route from Spring Forest rather than coming all the way around to the front, and other SBISD officers would also respond immediately.)
Another question that I've been asked is why it took so long for messaging to come out about the event. When something happens on campus that involves the police, fire department, any type of mandatory lockdown/shelter/hold, or any other significant event, any communication regarding the event comes from the district, not just from me. It must be approved by the district and sent to SBISD's Board of Trustees before it can be sent out to the community. I cannot get ahead of district messaging. I know this is frustrating, as you are used to getting information from me very quickly. Please know that I will send you the approved message as quickly as I can!
Our students did an AMAZING job evacuating the building when the alarm when off. We were already in the middle of our dismissal procedures, yet they didn't miss a beat in following the protocols that they have been taught. Parents were also incredibly patient and understanding as we waited for the all clear to be given, even when they had to move their cars for the fire truck. Thank you!
I also want to thank those parents who came to me with the above concerns. I cannot address your concerns or make adjustments if I'm unaware of them! Please never hesitate to reach out - the best way to get the correct information is going directly to the source! I appreciate your trust and willingness to communicate.
