A Message from Career Academy Principal, Katie Towler
I am experiencing the strangest May in my professional career. Even though there are more unknowns than knowns, one constant is the goodness that has come out of this. Thank you to those of you who are volunteering to make life easier for those in our community. Thank you to those of you who are working in essential fields to keep life moving for our community. Thank you to those of you who have been engaging with your teachers and your classmates to continue learning in this crazy time. I continue to be impressed with the maturity and wisdom of our students and I couldn't be prouder to be your principal. As we approach a season that is typically filled with in-person celebration, please know we celebrate you from afar. The class of 2020 is one that we will never forget, but it's not just because of Covid-19. We will never forget your successes, your compassion, your uniqueness, your talents, your personalities, and your energy. Thank you for being one of a kind.
Remain safe and be well.
Mrs. Towler

Career Pathway of the Month - Agriculture/FFA. Taylor Weidauer, Instructor
The Sioux City FFA Chapter was chartered in September 2019. Since then, it has taken on many tasks and succeeded in establishing a quality FFA Chapter. The National FFA Organization is the largest student led organization in the country. There is no doubt that the Sioux City FFA members stepped up to that expectation this past year. The members have conducted chapter meetings, participated in service projects, attended leadership contests and national conferences.
The Sioux City FFA Chapter is creating a generation of students that have a positive outlook on agriculture; Individuals who will become industry leaders, entrepreneurs, and educated consumers soon be out in the real world working beside members of our community. This generation of Sioux City agriculture students and FFA Members will have the knowledge and confidence to engage in our local agriculture.
With the introduction of FFA students are given the opportunity to share their passion and appreciation for agriculture. This program is fortunate to be located in Sioux City Iowa where there are endless opportunities to become involved in agriculture. The FFA motto says, “Doing to learn, learning to do, earning to live, living to serve” and the Sioux City Agriculture Program and FFA Chapter are doing just that.

The annual Invent-to-Innovate (i2i) Entrepreneurial Competition at the University of South Dakota was held virtually this year due to COVID-19. On Friday, April 24th, the university announced the winners of the competition.
This year, a team from the Sioux City Career Academy’s Entrepreneurship class was chosen as the 2nd place winners! One other team from the Career Academy submitted their entry and were well received too. The teams did a great job!

Students in the Career Academy’s Entrepreneurship class submitted their entries online and then the judges watched the video submissions by each team and determined the winners. This year, there were 29 entries (both high school and university levels). At the high school level, there were fourteen submissions by four different schools. They were required to submit a business plan for a new business or for a product/service idea using the Lean Canvas format.

Communication and Preparedness
Student and staff safety is of paramount importance in the Sioux City Community School District. For this reason, the District exercises a host of crisis prevention and planning tactics. Should an emergency occur, the school notifies you through our Blackboard phone system. In an emergency, the system calls every phone number associated with your child in order to reach you. The message will give you details about the emergency and provide directions on when/where to pick up your child if the normal school day is altered. Learn more about school safety.
