Message from Principal DiPalma
Hello Explorer Families,
We have made it to the last week of school before the Winter Break! This week will be filled with celebrating student achievements at our Leader in Me assemblies and our PK and Kindergarten students will have a holiday program for parents and guests this week. If you are visiting for programs or classroom celebrations, don't forget to bring your ID and arrive early for check-in.
We are also finishing up MOY screeners in Math and Reading for students in K-5 and must have these completed by Dec. 13.
Our student attendance took a big hit this week with the 398 student absences from Dec. 4-8. I sent an email on Friday evening with information from our school nurse and have included it below as well. It is very important that if your child has fever or tests positive for flu, strep or COVID that we use Nurse Ashley's illness form to accurately report these numbers to the county health department. On Friday we had 13% of our students out with illness. We are taking extra time to have students practice hand washing and we encourage students to cover mouths when coughing and get lots of rest and hydration. We hope that everyone who is sick is feeling much better very soon!
Be sure to check out the Twelve Days of Holiday Cheer and upcoming events for our campus for the month of December.
Let's have a wonderful week of learning. We are wishing all our families a safe and happy holiday season!
#ONE Team,
Alisa DiPalma, Principal
Reminders from Nurse Ashley
We have a large amount of Flu A and B, plus a mix of COVID and strep going through our school and the Hays community. If your child has fever please see if they can get tested so they get the right treatment to help them get healthy and feeling better faster. Please fill out my Tobias Student Injury/Illness Form so that I can keep track of illnesses per class and have accurate numbers to report to county.
For Flu you want to begin Tamiflu in 48 hours to reduce the length of illness.
Antivirals for COVID are recommended for those in the high risk group and need to begin with 5 days of symptoms onset.
For Strep, if your child does not get antibiotics they will be contagious for 2-3 weeks but also can have several complications some of which can be severe.
When in doubt please follow what your doctor’s office advises.
If your family is in need of resources for medical needs, Lirios Pediatrics offers free pediatric services: https://www.liriospediatrics.org/
There is also the Hays County Health Department and CommuniCare operates on a sliding fee scale. Another resource is https://www.findhelp.org/
Please follow district policy for reporting absences by emailing tesattendance@hayscisd.net and contacting your student's teacher. Students who are out for more than 3 days with fever or flu-like symptoms should return with a doctor's note.
Thank you for your help. We are hopeful that students will be better soon!

Hi Grown Ups!
This month I have been talking with students in grades 2-5 about Empathy. I think one of the biggest problems in our society these days is that people are spending so much time focusing on themselves and not enough time noticing others. We have been discussing how empathy means recognizing the feelings of others and trying to relate to or understand what they are going through. I encourage you to have discussions with your kids while reading books, watching tv or movies, or by modeling paying attention to the feelings and needs of others. Your kids are going to make the world a better place!
