SAMR Model in Detail
Integrating Technology Through with SAMR Model
The purpose of the SAMR Model is to assist instructors in determining the level of technology integration in the learning environment. The instructor must first decide to incorporate technology into the planned curriculum, and then determine if the technology is enhancing or transforming the learning. The goal is to introduce technology tools that redefine the learning space, which is ultimately accomplished by replacing traditional teaching methods with alternate learning environments.
This SMORE will provide you with guiding resources and multiple examples for utilizing the SAMR model and boosting your technology integration to foster student development.
Traditional
Coffee Metaphor
This image tries to relate your typical coffee shop orders (think Starbucks) with the SAMR model. Most teachers get connected with other teachers using technology, and through that influence begin to teach with engaging online tools. This observation also fits with the Starbucks metaphor since people also start drinking coffee and espresso drinks by connecting with others who do the same. The SAMR model can help such a teacher evaluate his or her use of a particular tool as technology continues to transform the teacher and classroom.
Pool Metaphor
This image represents the SAMR as a pool with a shallow end (Substitution and Augmentation) and a deep end (Modification and Redefinition). Keep in mind you cannot spend all your time in the deep end of the pool. As the image indicates, the only way to stay afloat in the deep end is to tread water, and after a time, you grow tired and will sink down. Swim laps. Visit both ends of the pool. Decide when is the right time to be in the shallow end and when to be in the deep end.
