International Baccalaureate
The International Baccalaureate Program (IB) at Shawnee Mission North is a two-year college preparatory program with a comprehensive academic program designed to address the needs of challenge seeking junior and senior students.
Students in the North IB Program are continuing an exciting semester of learning and creating understandings. The courses allow students to experience the rigors of life after high school and give opportunities to develop a growth mindset as well as the grit necessary for success.
In September, IB Psychology SL students, along with their instructor, Stephanie Gagnebin, dissected sheep brains as they looked at neuroscience. Students enjoyed applying their knowledge as well as the chance to engage psychology through the hands-on experience. Each of the students will be developing an exploration around individual research questions and the exposure to the biology of the brain while maximizing an opportunity to use inquiry skills as was tremendous.

World Language Fair
On Saturday, October 19th over 30 students from Shawnee Mission North and Shawnee Mission West attended the first World Language Fair developed by the Open Language Resource center on the KU campus. Students chose from sessions ranging from “Introduction to Wolof” to “Karaoke in Portuguese” that spanned the globe and represented over 20 languages. At lunch an Information Fair gave students contacts with area colleges (KU, K-State, Pitt State, Emporia and Baker) and discussed their scholarships and study abroad opportunities for language studies.
The students from both schools expressed interest in going back next year and I personally heard from several that it truly opened their eyes about the sheer number of languages that are offered during post-secondary education. North students currently studying Spanish and French were excited to see learn about job opportunities that arise from continued study of a world language after high school.
Debate Update
The Shawnee Mission North Debate squad has had a great start to the season. Since the first weekend of competition in September, SMN debaters have earned multiple awards for their debate excellence. In addition to teams earning medals for their win/loss records at tournaments, the entire squad can now add a 3rd Place Sweepstakes plaque from the Shawnee Mission Northwest Tournament to our shelf! Congratulations to Mason Trout, Hananeel Morinville, and Ryan Kirk for becoming earning this season’s first medals!
In addition, The Shawnee Mission North Debate Team will be hosting our annual Debate Invitational Tournament on Saturday, November 16th. We are looking for adult members of the community to judge debate rounds. Debate students have been tasked with recruiting judges for this tournament as part of their debate grade, as judge recruitment meets district curriculum standards. Your help is quite valuable. No debate or judging experience is necessary, and we will host an optional judge clinic on Thursday, November 14th at 6:00PM in room 12 for people who would like more information on how to judge (or judging instructions can be emailed to you). There will be free food, coffee, and soft drinks too!! If you are available, please click the link below to sign up. We truly appreciate your support and would love to have you!
