Hello Phoenix families,

First of all, I would like to apologize for not sending out a communication last week, with only four days....the week passed so quickly! I hope you all had a wonderful three day weekend and were able to take some time to reflect on the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King.

As January winds down and we look towards February, the school year's timeline seems to accelerate. In the immediate future, we have a February movie night and a poetry night. March will bring our mid cycle WASC visit and the talent show, April is state testing for our 11th graders and May brings prom, grad night and graduation....my head is spinning just thinking about it!

I have been doing some reorganizing around my house and I took some time the other day to appreciate the memories I have collected. Among the most precious that I have are the yearbooks from high school....mine, my husband's, my daughter's and my son's. Looking through their high school yearbooks brought back wonderful remembrances of success, struggles, friendships, mentors, and growth. These books that hold the memories of my childhood and my children's childhood's are irreplaceable fixtures in my home that I will always treasure. That being said, the HSMC yearbooks are officially on sale now. Please do not miss this opportunity to provide your family with the precious memories of HSMC's 2021-2022 school year. If you took a course at another school other than Moorpark College - Please submit your transcript to me ASAP so that I can post the course and grade on your HSMC transcript (i.e. Ventura, LACC, Pierce, BYU etc…)

Annual Statewide Financial Aid Workshops

The California Student Aid Commission has three upcoming workshops covering the Cal Grant program, recent expansion, the California Dream Act Application and the California Dream Act Service Incentive Grant. For the list of dates and more information visit their website.

CSU Financial Aid website

Eighty percent of students at the California State University receive some type of financial aid. Take advantage of the financial aid resources for students on our Cal State Financial Aid website. Resources include a net price cost calculator and financial aid office contact information for each CSU campus.

Cal Grant filing deadline – March 2, 2022

Students must apply for a Cal Grant by the March 2 deadline by filing the FAFSA or Dream Act application and high schools must provide a verified grade point average (GPA) to CSAC by this date. For more information, visit the CSU Cal Grants page.

Nursing Pathway Program Expands at the CSU

CSU campuses are cutting the time it takes for community college students to earn a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree.

Ten CSU campuses are now offering the ADN-to-BSN program to make the path to earning a BSN more streamlined by removing unnecessary time and costs for students to become workforce-ready. Click here to read more.

Any student who applied to college via the Common Application will have their mid year report submitted the first week of February which includes your most recent official transcript. Please check your student portals for communication from your colleges. If a CSU or UC wants your official transcript - Let me know so that I can send through Naviance.

Valentine's Day is coming soon and love school spirit is in the air! Please dress up for Valentine's Spirit week to show you care! Those who participate will get candy during lunch breaks.

Please join us for a Valentine's Day Movie Night on Thursday February 17th at 6:30pm on the HSMC campus. The film shown will be Disney's Tangled. Popcorn, candy, and water will be provided. Please bring your own chairs and blankets to sit on. Hope to see you there!

Please join us for the 8th Annual Phoenix Rising Talent Show and Silent Auction Friday March 18th at 6pm to see our amazing students display their talents! The show will be held in the Forum at Moorpark College. Admission and parking are FREE! Auditions for students will be held on Friday February 18th at 12pm. Grad Bash Universal is celebrating our Juniors and seniors! Students will have access to most rides and attractions at Universal Studios Hollywood, along with live DJs and multiple dance parties throughout the park. There will also be special graduation-themed photo ops throughout the park.

This is an overnight event that will run from Friday May 13 at 4pm-Saturday May 14 at 2am. Tickets for Grad Bash will go on sale in the HSMC office April 4-27th for $80 each. Tickets include bus transportation to the park. Students who purchased Grad Bash tickets with a Spirit Pack in October will not need to purchase additional tickets. This year our junior and senior prom will be held on the Ruwe Terrace of the beautiful Ronald Reagan Library in Simi Valley on Friday April 22nd from 6-11pm. This year’s theme is Balle Classique (Classic Ball). A tour of the Reagan special exhibits, as well as beverages, coffee, and desserts will be included in admission. Prom tickets can be purchased in the HSMC office March 14-31st for $75 each. Students who purchased prom tickets with a Spirit Pack in October will not need to purchase additional tickets. HSMC students who wish to bring guests to prom will need to fill out a guest form that can be obtained from the HSMC office for each guest. Guests must be under 21 years old.

COVID-19 GUIDELINES: To enter the event, attendees must bring proof of vaccination, either a physical vaccination card, a picture of their vaccination card, or a digital vaccination record, or health care document showing vaccination status, along with photo ID. Children under the age of 12 and unvaccinated persons must provide proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR test taken within three days prior to the event they’re attending at the Reagan Library or Reagan Institute. This policy also applies to all speakers and performers associated with the event, as well as all staff. Any attendee who arrives at registration check-in without proof of vaccination or a negative COVID test performed within the past 3 days will not be admitted into the event.

The High School at Moorpark College will be hosting our 8th annual Talent Show and Silent Auction this year in March 2022. We are currently soliciting donations from local businesses and entertainment venues to auction during our show. In exchange for donations, the High School at Moorpark College can provide a Tax ID number for tax exemptions, and free advertising for participating businesses in our talent show program and our online auction. Do you want to see the HSMC staff do some crazy stunts? Donate money and help raise funds for Prom 2022 at the same time! Donation jars will be in the office beginning October 1st. Once each goal has been reached, staff will do the stunt on the following Friday at noon.

Please note that photos do not have to be taken by a professional photographer, but the lighting, quality, and content must be professional in nature.

Those who choose not to submit senior portraits will have their Cornerstone photos in the yearbook.

Senior quotes are not mandatory. Students can submit quotes that are 140 characters or fewer, and are school appropriate. Quotes must be submitted by DECEMBER 10, 2021 to hsmcyearbook2022@gmail.com.

Ever wanted to learn how to code? The HS@MC Coding Club is right for you! We are a club that focuses on teaching, competing, or simply having fun with code and computer science. We host lessons during our meetings, and coding challenges for each member to participate in! Our club intends to be a welcoming and inclusive space for everyone, whether you're a beginner or a fully-fledged hacker!

TTRPG is a club that promotes creativity through playing games like Dungeons and Dragons. You can play an exotic spellcaster who wishes to rule the world with an iron fist or you can play Bob who wants to settle down on a farm with a loving family. No Experience with TTRPG? Doesn't matter! Our main goal is to just have fun so we welcome anyone who is open to playing no matter their experience!

The film and photography club on the HSMC campus will have weekly themes, as well as an opportunity to present your photos/films every week. You can make them as funny or as serious as you would like. This club will differ from Mr. Hoobs' film class in that we will not be watching films, but shooting them, or, if that's not your style, just taking photos. The club will be meeting in TR-3 every friday from 12:00 - 12:40. This is a place where you can express your personal identity, while also creating a laid back environment to destress every week.
