Curriculum and Assessment Updates
Parent/Caregiver ECP Survey
The Maynard Public Schools has partnered with the Education Commonwealth Project (ECP), a research group now located at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, to administer our survey, which has been developed over the past year with the full cooperation and assistance of the district’s Diversity Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Committee and building based administrators. ECP is the group that facilitated our student and staff surveys over the past two years, and their reliable and valid surveys are currently in use in districts across the state, encompassing more than 10% of all students in Massachusetts public schools. Since all of the work done by ECP is state grant funded, there is no cost to the Maynard Public Schools for any of this work. More information on the Education Commonwealth Project can be found here: https://www.edcommonwealth.org/
The survey itself will take 15-20 minutes to complete. If you have students in multiple schools, it would be greatly appreciated if you could complete multiple surveys as they are specific to each school. The survey window will open today, May 1st, and close on Wednesday, May 15th. Parents with students at more than one school will receive a separate email and link for each school.
Notes on the survey:
The survey saves progress automatically. You can start, stop, and complete a survey that you started later.
All survey links are unique to the person receiving them and can only be submitted once. They will not work if forwarded to another email address.
Survey translations can be accessed in the dropdown menu in the upper right-hand corner of each page. (See the screenshot below.)
Thank you in advance for participating! Your feedback will help guide the district's strategic planning decision-making process.
Grade 3 Math MCAS
Our Grade 3 students will be taking Math MCAS on Tuesday, May 7, and Wednesday, May 8. Classroom teachers have reviewed sample questions and what to expect. A few things to think about when talking with your Grade 3 student about the tests:
* Students will start the test at 9:00 AM. They have as much time as they need that day to complete the test.
* Students should get a good night's sleep before the test and eat breakfast at home or at school that day.
* It is important to arrive to school on time these days.
* Grade 3 specials have been moved to the end of the day so that students will not miss them.
* Candy and gum will not be allowed unless part of a student's individualized education plan.
* Electronic devices are not allowed to be used during MCAS. Smart watches and phones should be left at home on MCAS days or stored in backpacks (This is always the policy at Green Meadow.)
* MCAS provides information about how we are doing as a school. Students should try their best but should not worry about the test. They will take an MCAS test many more times before they need to take it to graduate.
Playground Reminders
The weather is getting nicer and it is wonderful to see so many families using our playground to gather and get to know each other. A few quick reminders as you supervise your children:
* Please remind children to respect the playground space and the people who are using it. Students take the Green Meadow pledge everyday to be Kind, Safe, Learners. We remind students that this is important even when teachers are not watching.
* The children are well-versed in our playground rules during the school day. If your child is using equipment in an unsafe way they can always be reminded to follow "school playground rules."
* During the school day, students do not play in the woods. This rule is in place for supervision purposes and because we are back in tick season. If your child plays in the woods after school we recommend you check them for ticks before leaving.
* Please ask children to return any big sticks or rocks to the woods before leaving the playground so it is ready to go the next day.
Thank you for your help! Please keep the outdoor play going during the last few weeks of school.
Preschool P.E. Open House
Our Preschool will be celebrating the end of the year with a PE Open House. Families are invited to attend one of the last physical education classes of the school year from 10:00 to 10:30 and participate in movement activities with their child.

-Thursday, May 23th: L. Paoletti's class
-Tuesday, May 28th: J. Cohen's class

Families will arrive at 10:00 and leave at 10:30. AM students might be dismissed earlier on that day. PM students will be invited to attend gym class in the morning. Transportation for all students will be the responsibility of the families. The Preschool team will be in touch with additional details.
Welcome to the Counselor's Corner!
Conflict is uncomfortable, yet inevitable. Learning how to resolve conflict is a skill, and one that can be taught. You can help your child gain tools to resolve conflicts peacefully and more importantly, internalize these conflict resolution strategies so they can solve their own conflicts when you are not there. As always, how you manage yourself, even when in conflict, may be the best teacher of all! Additional SEL resources can be found on the Green Meadow Social Emotional Learning Resources website.

Kindergarten Screening
If you know of any rising kindergarteners, we are offering Kindergarten Screening June 11-June 13. Each appointment is 25 minutes long. Students will meet with a staff member for the screening and caregivers have the opportunity to ask questions about our program or check in with a school nurse. If the child is part of our preschool program at Green Meadow they will be screened during their school day.

PTO Sponsored Enrichment Programs
This week the first grade had a presentation on sound from the Discovery Museum. Students learned what makes sound. They learned that vibration travels in waves and can travel through a solid, a liquid and a gas. During the presentation students worked at 3 different stations to explore vibration. At each station students used tuning forks to see how the vibration traveled through water, objects and the air. At the end of the presentation students made laugh cups to bring home. It was a wonderful, hands-on experience and was enjoyed by all. Thank you to our amazing PTO for funding this workshop for us.
