Message From Principal Kinney
Hello Families,
As we approach the long weekend in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, I encourage you to take a moment to reflect on the significance of this day with your students. It is essential to help our children connect with influential figures like Dr. King, understanding their contributions and the sacrifices they made that led to meaningful changes in our world.
While many students may recognize Dr. King primarily through his famous “I Have a Dream” speech, it is important to explore the many other impactful actions and ideals he represented. I urge you to engage in a discussion with your students about the importance of leadership and the qualities that make a true leader. This morning, in my reading about Dr. King, I came across two facts that stood out:
1. Dr. King is the only non-president to have a national holiday dedicated in his honor.
2. Dr. King is the only non-president memorialized on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.
These facts resonated with me, especially this year because Monday also marks a day of leadership change in our country. I want to emphasize that this message is not about political views; rather, it highlights Dr. King’s remarkable leadership and sacrifices. Regardless of our political opinions, Dr. King deserves to be remembered for the positive changes he brought about in our world, without ever having lived on 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.
Thank you for your attention, and I wish you all a wonderful weekend!
Respectfully,
Keith
