Helping your student prepare for testing
Next week students will have their mid-year assessments for reading and math. Here are a few tips to support your student:
1. Ensure they are well-rested
Keep a consistent and early bedtime throughout the year- and especially around this time with breaks and special holiday events.
2. Eat a healthy breakfast
Remember, all students receive free breakfast and lunch at school. Encourage your child to eat breakfast so that their brains have the energy needed to learn!
3. Arrive at school on time
4. Encourage a growth mindset
Is your student nervous about tests? Remind them that each test is simply a way to see what they've learned and where they can grow. Each mistake is an opportunity to learn, and assessments help their teacher know what they need. You can help your child develop a growth mindset by encouraging them to keep trying, and offering praise for working hard instead of saying "good job."
Examples:
"I noticed you working at this a long time," or "Great work, you kept trying even when it was hard!"
