Pink Shirt Day

It was heartening today to see so many of our students supporting the Pink Shirt Day anti-bullying awareness campaign. As a staff we reflected this morning on the importance of positive messaging in any campaign to change behaviours and particularly in this instance on promoting kindness, tolerance and sensitivity to the individual needs of each and every one of our rangatahi. In our complex world in which our students are challenged in terms of their identity and their sense of belonging, it is vital we are supportive and inclusive of each and every student. To support this, it is really helpful when whanau have conversations at home about ways to ensure that no-one is stigmatised, isolated or rejected through the words that we use and the actions we take. Deliberate acts of kindness and inclusivity go a long way to promote and support the values that we want to foster at Trident. Well done to the Year 10 students who worked with Ms Farrell on today’s awareness day and thanks as always to the senior leaders who nurture such events.

Senior Academic Interviews

Next week on Wednesday we have Senior Academic Interviews with our subject teachers. This is your first opportunity to sit with a subject expert and track your student’s achievement and progress to date in their course. It is a good time for students, whanau and teachers to determine the next steps, to set goals and to aspire to personal excellence. Your participation in this stage in the learning journey is vital if your student is to have the best opportunities to personally excel. We know for some of you, there are clashes with other commitments; please contact teachers and let them know if you would like a phone call to discuss your student’s needs in their subject area in the event that you cannot make it to school. Alternatively, if you want to, you can phone the office and they will help you.

Leadership Across the School

Today our Sports Co-ordinator Brent Jones and Caroline Reddish, took a group of Year Twelve students to Rotorua for the Isport Youth Foundation leadership day. It was a successful day for them all as they listened to engaging presentations from sportspeople on aspects of leadership which led to sporting success. Of particular note for our students was Honey Hireme's question - "Would you follow yourself?" as a leader; such a good reflection on the traits we want to demonstrate in a leadership role.

Leadership as service is a key part of the ethos of Trident and such a significant way for our young people to experience personal growth. Yesterday Jon Stanhope shared our students with Saint Joseph’s School as they held their Cross Country, and as always Trident students were kind, connected and encouraging to these younger students in this major school event. Last week Nigel Rowland, along with Year Twelve students accompanied the GBI students on their pre-GBI camp, and the senior students led and organized the camp with excellent organisational skills. This willingness to serve the needs of other students and step up to the challenges this presents is a key life skill to develop. Finally, today I met with Malachi, Georgia, Elissa, Danielle and Hannah who represent the Enviro-Group working alongside Dave Dobbin at Trident, and are in the midst of planning a new environmental project at the school. Again these students are examples of the power of leadership through service; their actions have an ongoing, significant impact on our school life.

These are wonderful reminders of the many ways that our students contribute to the life of the school and you should be justifiably proud of their participation.

This week was Trident’s 17th Annual Pet Food / SPCA Appeal Week. Students and staff had the opportunity to donate non-perishable pet food and had fun by dressing like their favourite animal.

Well done to the winning house - Pomare who donated 27.42kg’s of food, Kara who donated 27kg’s of food, Buck who donated 24.42 kg’s of food and Ngata who donated 18.411 kg’s of food. In total Pomare gained 1153 points, Kara 1136 points, Buck gained 1000 points and Ngata gained 792 points.

All the pet food and proceeds will be donated to the SPCA, OSCA in Opotiki, Harmony and Hope in Whakatane and All Paws Count Murupara Trust. Thank you to all the parents, students and staff who contributed to the SPCA appeal – without your support it would not have been possible. Thank you to Malachi Gerrard, Year 13 for the beautiful photos.

Today two of our amazing staff were recognised for all the work they do above and beyond the call of duty. We are so proud that Chris Burn and Katie Elliott were nominated and presented with the Random Act of Kindness award from Sun FM.

Being a teacher is always going to involve long days of lesson planning, teaching, marking, sports coaching, duties and so forth. Chris Burn and Katie Elliott are such active members in our community who give of their time, energy and resources to ensure that the students at Trident High School are able to have opportunities to do and be their best versions of themselves.

A huge mihi also to Whakatane Placemakers who sponsored the award! A beautiful bouquet of flowers, gift basket and vouchers for a very deserving pair.

Last week the 47 students who are going to Great Barrier Island camped at the Lion's Hut to practice for their 5 week camp that will be in Term 3.

We were lucky to have 13 of our Year 12's who are past GBI students design, organise and run the camp which was a massive success. Mrs Hay, Mrs Young and Mr Rowland, the teachers who attended the camp, were impressed by everyone, especially the Y12's and their leadership skills they learnt when they were at GBI and have continued to work on. The group are all now looking forward to the 5 week camp in September!

Upcoming Careers Events in Term 2

Forestry Expo - 1st June at Whakatane High School.

We will be taking 2 Year 10 Social Studies classes to this event hosted by Whakatane High School. Other interested students are welcome to join us. Please let Ms Wildash know if you are interested.

Health Science Careers Events

In July we have two really exciting careers events related to the Health Sciences.

On the 1st July we have a health careers expo for senior students to be held at Whakatane Hospital. We will be taking students who are considering a career in the health field. This includes clinical, non clinical and allied health professions.

On the 2nd July we will be hosting an event for Year 10 students run by the Rural GP network. This is an interactive event linking their science learning to health science.

In the holidays Brodie Bishop and Kyla Du Preez attended a 5 day Innovative Young Minds camp. This camp had a twist though - it was entirely online over zoom. The camp was for girls in either Year 11 or Year 12 and Brodie and Kyla jumped at the opportunity to be involved.

Over the course of 5 days the girls listened to lots of speakers talk about their jobs; how they got there, what they did at high school and what they did on their journey to get to where they are now.

Part of the camp saw the girls involved in an ‘Innovation Challenge’ where they were put into groups of 10 and had to make something to help with the environment using renewable energy. The tutor’s put the groups into breakout rooms on zoom. Brodie’s group made a rubbish truck for plastic, where eliminating plastic from people's homes was the goal. The plastic would go into the truck and be sorted by a robot before it would go into a cycle that would wash and cut the plastic and that would then go into a box which would then be heated by solar power and react with chemicals to disintegrate. The bi product would be water vapour which would then be reused in the washing cycle.

Brodie says she learnt about a lot of different career pathways, and that a lot of the people that have important and impressive careers didn’t know what career they actually wanted, but chose subjects they liked, a degree based on that passion and then the jobs lined up with their passion and qualification.

She says “It has opened my eyes to job opportunities and now I feel comfortable going on a path of choosing things I enjoy doing. I would recommend doing this camp, it was a great use of the holiday time and a great way to start thinking about your future.”

Well done, such a great achievement for you all!

A great day out at Manawaha Eco Trust today with the schools Multisport team races. Students competed in Mountain Biking, Orienteering, 5km run and a mix of mystery activities along the way.

The Girls team of Eva Fuller, Hannah Baxter and Maria Stoove finishing strong in 2nd place in the year 9/10.

The Boys team of Max Kirk, Joseph Spalding and Ryan Somerville finishing 4th in the Year 9/10 race. Well done everyone!

Last night was the first time in a number of years that Trident and Whakatane High School have played in a competition match for Boys' Hockey since they have come up to the A Grade.

We expected that Whakatane High School would come out on fire and they didn’t disappoint. Trident struggled to find their momentum at first and took a while to settle into the game.

In the second quarter Trident came back and took on more of a dominating role with some missed scoring opportunities thanks to Whakatane High School's fantastic Goalie. Finally Epa Ruawai managed to break through their strong defence and put our first points on the board from a penalty corner finishing with a great deflection into the goal.

Half time score was 1-1, both teams started the second half extremely strong both wanting the win but thanks to an awesome goal by Te Manutai Moses McRoberts Trident took the lead again.

The last quarter was an absolute nail biter with Trident missing some great chances on goal but also demonstrating some fantastic defence – great game tonight for Jacob Bridge down the back and Bailey Frederickson who stepped up to also cover the back for us. Final score 2-1 to Trident.

Trident played Katikati on the weekend which started with an explosive haka with our U16's joined in to show their support.

The action continued from the first whistle when Maxwell Wharewera stopped Katikati's biggest player with a strong tackle and set the tone for the rest of the match.

Trident was first on the scoreboard when Whare Whakamoe-Williams finished a swiping play and continued his first try-scoring streak. Katikati answered after a number of phases making the score 7-5.

Just before half time Malachi Kurei had some work to do before fending off his opponent to finish the half. With Ethan Forbes converting both tries the half time score was 14-5.

Rickie Harte, Braedyn Elmiger and Turanga Tuhoro have formed a strong flanker combination, making a number of tackles and steals at the breakdown.

Malachi was back at it again slamming the ball down in the corner from his second try after some smart thinking from vice captain Kani Paniora.

Tane Howe and Chucky Kurei spent the day setting up their outside, throwing no looks passes, attacking at every opportunity and showing their talent. Ethan Forbes was a stand out both on attack and defense.

Finally, Issac Tai finished off a break from Ethan to score before Katikati scored two consolation tries for the final score 24-17 to Trident.

The last game of the pre season was the best test so far for the upcoming season, Trident started the game strong and we played some awesome rugby on attack and defense. Domain Ngamoko was physical with some big tackles also scoring a try. Trident dominated the first half and went into the break with a 26 point lead.

The U16's allowed Katikati back in the game with a lack of fitness and missing some first time tackles. Mason Raynes, Alex Whittle and Ghiaan Herewini had strong games for the backs. Captain Isaiah Kepa lead from the front with support from Ezrah Collins, Tio Morehu and Wiremu Shortland.

Again, we had a big squad of players and allowed all to play as it has been about the relationships, camaraderie and memories made by our boys. We are confident and excited for the competition to start and looking forward to seeing all whanau and friends along the side of the fields.

Trident Junior Girls turned up ready to play on Monday night but unfortunately Whakatane High School didn't have enough players to start the game. After the required 5 minutes and the game called as a defaulted win to Trident, a team was put together to give the girls a run. Thanks to the Whakatane High School Girls and the Trident Senior Girls that filled in.

The Senior Boys Blue team played against Edgecumbe College. After a slow start, Trident guards managed to get some fast breaks leading to some good lay ups at the opposite end. Derek Taare put up plenty of points off his offensive rebounding while Nikau Brown was a threat beyond the three. Sam Royal also got some good touches in after some good passing from his team.

Trident Junior Boys Blue team had a good game against Edgecumbe Junior Boys, The game started with some early points from Hemi Parata as well as some great offensive rebounds. The team kept up the intensity for a while before some misdirected passes led to Edgecumbe getting easy intercepts leading to open layups. A good half time talk got Trident back on track and they kept the pressure on and closed out the game well going on to win.

The Senior Girls started out with a 6 man team due to a few short notice absentees. However, they managed to pull off a win against Whakatane High School with a rusty start that eventually saw them taking a comfortable lead to win the game 43-24. Well done girls.

Last up for the night were the Senior A boys vs Te Kura Kokiri. The boys started off strong with their full court press and forced many turnovers and steals. However, it was a close game until half time as Kokiri were scoring solidly through their big men.

After half time, Trident changed the defence to a 21 zone defence which strengthened up the inside and stopped the opponent from scoring from the paint. The gap started to increase in the 4th quarter and Trident went on to win the game, 64-38.
