Notes from Principal Chapman
Dear LHS Students, Families, and Staff,
It is important to PPS that immigrant families and staff feel safe and supported. A number of families have expressed to me and other members of our staff that they are concerned about possible immigration actions under the new presidential administration. I want to personally reassure you that our top priority is ensuring the safety and well-being of all of our students and staff. We continue to work closely with PPS leadership and our community partners to uphold Oregon law prohibiting state and local law enforcement from arresting or detaining people based solely on immigration status. Additionally, Oregon law protects student educational records from use for immigration actions.
In times of uncertainty, it is always beneficial to be proactive and prepared, and it’s crucial that we have up-to-date contact information for you and your student. If you have not done so already, please complete the yearly student verification form to ensure we’re reaching you via the right information and in the right language. This information is protected and will not be shared with non-PPS staff.
I also wanted to provide the following resources:
This FAQ and this webpage answer many questions about the steps Portland Public Schools will be taking to safeguard staff and students going forward.
This page from the Multnomah Education Service District (MESD) includes a family resource hub and culturally specific information for families in the Portland area.
The Immigrant Legal Resource Center Little Red Card is meant to help people assert their rights and defend themselves in many situations. The cards can be printed out in your preferred language and carried on your person.
Know Your Rights for Families/Students (Oregon ACLU)
PPS’s Office for Civil Rights offers support addressing discrimination, harassment, and bias-related concerns.
Please contact me at peytonc@pps.net if you have any questions or concerns. We care deeply about all of our families and students, and this is a top priority for all of us here at Lincoln.
I also want to make sure you have all seen this budget related memo from our Superintendent. You can also read the recent coverage on OPB and in the Oregonian. PPS has adjusted our staffing timeline and we expect to receive our 2025-2026 staffing budget on February 28th. We will continue to update our community as we receive updates. Please take every opportunity to give feedback during the budget process via PPS surveys and community input meetings. There will also be opportunities to learn more about state advocacy at events held by local school communities . We need Oregon to fully fund a Quality Education Model (QEM) for our students and our state to fully succeed. I will continue to advocate for cuts and consolidations that best protect schools and best maintain school based programs and staffing. It takes a few hours to cut a program and too often it takes 20 years to bring it back. We are also always working to help families in private schools, and those new to Portland, fully understand all the incredible opportunities that exist across PPS, at LHS, and in our feeder schools. Enrollment remains crucial for our staffing and we appreciate all of your help as school ambassadors. This is always a hard political process and we appreciate everyone's steady focus on all the other ways we are working to support our students.
We are now officially done with the first semester of the school year! Congratulations on all of our students’ growth and hard work. We are excited to celebrate at our Winter Formal this Saturday night at the Melody Ballroom in Southeast Portland from 7-10. We will also be hosting a fun and inclusive schoolwide Chinese New Year Celebration on January 31st. We hope everyone will join us! According to the Chinese Zodiac the Year of the Snake brings transformation, renewal, and growth, as well as opportunities and new relationships. In this spirit we are excited to announce a new sister school collaboration with the Olympia School in Hanoi, Vietnam. The Olympia School is in the process of becoming an IB World School and is hoping to send 9th grade students to visit our school this spring with arrangements to be finalized after Tet, the New Year celebration in Vietnam. If all goes well we will be looking for host families for a two week visit as soon as this April. We have sent warm wishes, Chúc mừng năm mới, for the lunar new year from our school community.
Finally, we are incredibly proud to announce that LHS STEM teacher Ms. Ranjani Krishnan has been awarded the highest academic honor of Presidential Excellence in Mathematics & Science Teaching, and is now a national awardee earning the PAEMST Award for Science & Mathematics! Ms. Krishnan teaches CTE Computer Science and Coding, modeling life-long learning, always centering excellence and equitable practices in her teaching. Ms. Krishnan is also an accomplished musician and a highly collaborative colleague. We are grateful she chooses to teach at Lincoln! When we say we have excellent educators at LHS we are serious about excellence!
Cheers to the beginning of a new academic semester & Go Cards!

Lincoln Wrestling Senior Nico Farinola Looks Forward to State
LHS has not had a boys wrestling state champion in more than three decades, but senior Nico Farinola is intent on breaking through this year. Farinola, who finished third in the 6A state meet at 132 pounds last year, is currently 20-1 on the season, with three tournament titles to his credit (132/138). He crossed the century mark last weekend with his 100th win! Go Nico! Go Cards!
Lincoln Snowboard Team Kicks Off the Season with Strong Performances
The Lincoln Snowboard team hit the ground running this season! Our riders had a productive practice session, working closely with our outstanding coaching staff to hone their skills across all snowboarding disciplines, with a particular focus on banked slalom. At our first competition (Banked Slalom) of the season, Lincoln riders showcased their talent and determination. Izzy Lamb had an exceptional performance, earning a podium spot with the second-fastest time of the day in the girls' race. On the boys' side, our athletes delivered a solid effort: Oscar Vaterlaus placed 6th, Jasper Zanze secured 7th, and Liam Poizer finished 15th. This strong start provides an excellent foundation for the team to build upon as the season progresses. Here's hoping for more snow soon—it’s been a dry January, so keep those snow dances going!

Alumni In the News
The passing of LHSAA President Glenn McMath last week has been weighing heavily on all of our hearts with many alumni calling and emailing to share the news and hard impact. Glenn was an amazing friend, leader, father to Lucy, husband to Dicky, always open minded and big hearted, saying yes to helping others and his LHS and Portland community. He fought a brave battle against pancreatic cancer, staying positive and involved to the very end. We will miss his warm smile and quarterly letters in the alumni magazine. We send all of our love to his family and close friends. We miss you Glenn McMath! Follow https://www.lincolnalum.org/News-&-Events for more information and updates regarding Glenn’s celebration of life. Donations to a named scholarship in his honor can be made here: https://www.lincolnalum.org/Glenn-Doyle-McMath-Scholarships-Donation-Form/ LHSAA hopes to be able to award the first Glenn McMath scholarship to a graduating senior this spring.
LHS alum Jim Rosenbaum published an illustrated children's book this week. It's called Eleanor and Geraldine and it's available on Amazon for $6. It's a bedtime story created for his two daughters who grew up on Hewett Blvd in SW Portland. Both are now physicians in their 40’s. It's a story about friendship, individuality, and unintended consequences.
Although the book was released just a few days ago, it is now #1 on Amazon for teen and family issues.
