Subject: The Power of Visual & Performing Arts and Technology in Student Success
Dear Mariner Family,
At IHCS, we believe in cultivating well-rounded students who not only excel academically but also develop creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration skills that prepare them for a successful future. That’s why we are committed to providing rich opportunities in Visual & Performing Arts (VAPA) and Technology—both during the school day and in our after-school programs.
The Impact of Arts and Technology on Higher Learning
Research shows that students engaged in the arts and technology:
🎭 Are more likely to graduate – Students who participate in the arts are five times more likely to graduate high school and pursue higher education.
💻 Develop 21st-century skills – Technology-infused learning fosters problem-solving, adaptability, and digital literacy—essential for success in any career.
🎨 Excel in core subjects – Studies indicate that students in arts programs score up to 15% higher on standardized tests in reading and math.
🎤 Gain confidence & leadership skills – Performing arts build public speaking abilities and self-expression, empowering students to take on leadership roles.
Opportunities at IHCS
✅ Daytime Learning: Our instructional programs integrate VAPA and technology to engage students in meaningful, creative ways. Our K-5 CAMP program focuses on Computers, Art, Music and Physical Education, along with our middle school elective classes in computers, art, music and physical education.
✅ After-School/Saturday Enrichment: Students have the opportunity to participate in a variety of enriching experiences, including clubs, performances, competitions, and hands-on projects that enhance their learning. Additionally, our middle school students benefit from athletic opportunities through our after-school ELEVO program.
On February 22, our Saturday program showcased engaging activities in technology, music, and marine science. Our kindergarten students enjoyed an immersive, hands-on exploration of sea creatures, highlighted by a special presentation from Captain Joseph of the Tidepools organization. Students extended their learning inside the classroom, with support from parent volunteers and our Kindergarten Teachers. Thank you to all.
Saturday, February 22 included our computer science teacher, Ms. Harkema. She introduced students in grades K-8 to exciting technology experiences, including coding and programming Ozobots. She also led professional development for both classified and certificated staff, equipping them with instructional strategies to enhance their teaching. As we continue to expand our robotics club and computer science opportunities, her efforts are helping grow a team of educators ready to support additional after-school and Saturday programs.
On Saturday, February 22nd, our thriving mariachi program was also in full swing! With 73 dedicated students from 2nd to 8th grade, the program continues to flourish. As we look ahead to next school year, we are excited to welcome 80 new beginner students to join this incredible musical journey and increase this program to a total student-mariachi population of 153. Saturday sign-ups are already underway—don’t miss the chance to be part of something special! Thank you to Mrs. Llausas for leading our Saturday opportunities, including our Mariachi Staff!
We encourage all students to take advantage of these opportunities to explore their passions, build essential skills, and prepare for a bright future. Thank you for your continued support in making IHCS a place where students thrive in all aspects of learning!
With appreciation,

Attendance Matters
Hi Mariner Families,
As we get closer to the end of the school year, attendance begins to decrease. We want to remind parents, guardians and students that regular attendance plays a crucial role in a student’s academic success. Consistent attendance allows students to engage in lessons, participate in activities, and learn the information they need to succeed. Missing school can lead to gaps in understanding, making it more challenging for students to keep up with assignments, peer interactions and so much more. Not having consistent attendance not only affects their academic performance but can also impact their confidence and motivation. By prioritizing attendance, students develop a strong foundation for learning, build better relationships with teachers, school staff and classmates, and are also more likely to reach their full potential. Parents are key partners in supporting regular attendance, as their involvement and encouragement can make a significant difference in helping students stay on track and thrive academically. At Innovative Horizons charter school perfect attendance does not go unnoticed. Students can earn a perfect attendance movie trip, ice cream and so much more. Please continue coming to school EVERY DAY- ON TIME. We miss you when you are not here!
