COMMUNITY UPDATE
Hello North Rockland Families,
As we move into November, a time of reflection and gratitude, I want to acknowledge the ongoing commitment and dedication of our North Rockland Central School District Board of Education. With the recent national recognition of Board of Education Week, we took the opportunity to celebrate our Board at Tuesday night's meeting, honoring its invaluable contributions to our school community. Under its leadership, NRCSD has made significant program enhancements and capital improvements without raising taxes or seeking additional funding through referendums. This is a testament to its tireless work to make our schools the best they can be, with a singular focus on supporting our students in achieving their hopes and dreams. Their vision, leadership and unwavering support continue to guide our district and we are truly grateful.
This month also brings important updates for the future of our district, starting with the recent approval by our Board of Education to move forward with a property purchase referendum. On Monday, January 6 (snow date January 13), North Rockland voters will consider a proposal to allow the district to purchase a residential property located at 28 Miller Drive in Stony Point for $700,000.
The proposed purchase of this property is an essential development for Stony Point Elementary, with several key goals in mind. The district aims to improve curb appeal, provide additional parking for both staff and families and create a safer, less disruptive environment for drop-offs, pick-ups and school events. Currently, congestion during these times has become a safety concern and this property will help alleviate those issues, improve pedestrian safety and reduce traffic-related disruptions. The District is currently working with its architect to finalize plans for how the property will be utilized. A mailer with more information will be sent to residents and I will provide further details at the upcoming Board of Education meeting on December 3.
Through strategic planning and responsible budgeting, NRCSD will utilize funds from previously approved reserves to finance the property purchase, meaning there will be NO additional cost to taxpayers. We encourage all residents to consider this key initiative aimed at improving safety and increasing curb appeal - while also being a good neighbor.
As we look ahead to the holiday season, the North Rockland school community will be working to support one another, especially families who may need assistance. I encourage everyone to get involved when possible and to reach out for help if needed. This time of year offers a perfect opportunity to be thankful for the hard work of our staff, the dedication of our families and the resilience of our students. Together, we continue to build a strong and supportive educational environment—one that truly exemplifies what North Rockland is all about: lifting up one another.
With our eye always on safety and security, I’m proud to announce that, in partnership with the Town of Haverstraw and the Haverstraw Police Department, we’ve expanded our School Resource Officer (SRO) program with the addition of two police officers. As a result, every North Rockland school building will now have an SRO present for a portion of the school day. This expansion further strengthens our commitment to the safety and well-being of our students, staff and families.
As we reflect on the recent elections, regardless of where you stand politically, I encourage everyone to remember that we are all part of ONE North Rockland community. It is important to be positive role models for our students, showing them that it’s healthy to have different perspectives and beliefs. Being a good citizen means being respectful and civil - even when we disagree. No matter where we stand, we are all NR and we are stronger when we support each other.
I would also like to invite the community to come out and support our talented high school students this weekend! The North Rockland High School Drama Society is presenting its fall production of “She Kills Monsters.” Break a leg!
On Friday morning, NRHS held a wonderful Veterans Day assembly to honor those who have served our country. The event featured performances by the Marching Band, NJROTC Color Guard and Choir—recognizing the sacrifices of our veterans. Thanks to all who participated.
As a reminder, there will be no school on Monday, November 11, in observance of Veterans Day. On Veterans Day, we take time to recognize those who have served our nation in the U.S. Armed Forces. We honor their commitment, bravery and sacrifices to protect the ideals and freedoms we cherish as Americans.

#PointsOfPride - NR Runs the NYC Marathon
This week, we're celebrating three incredible members of our North Rockland family who conquered the New York City Marathon! Betsy Gonzalez, our friendly face and security aide at West Haverstraw, Shaun Fyffe, the much-loved Assistant Principal at Fieldstone Middle School and Sydney Valerio, the amazing English Language Arts teacher at North Rockland High School, showed us all what grit and determination look like! They kept up rigorous training schedules to prepare for this iconic race—a feat only 4% of applicants achieved out of over 165,000 who entered! Their commitment to this challenge reminds us that with passion and hard work, anything is possible. We couldn’t be prouder of their accomplishment and the example they set for our students, staff and community.

Our talented North Rockland High School Drama Society is proud to present She Kills Monsters, a heartwarming and adventurous drama-comedy by Qui Nguyen. Join us for any performance as Agnes Evans dives into a Dungeons & Dragons game to better understand her late sister Tilly and uncover a world she never knew existed. Our cast and crew have worked tirelessly to bring this incredible story to life, and we couldn’t be prouder of their dedication and creativity. The show will run November 8, 9, 14, 15 and 16, all at 7PM.
Tickets are available for purchase at the door or online at https://nrhsdrama.booktix.com.
WHES Career Day
This week West Haverstraw Elementary School held a Career Day! Our students met community members from all kinds of industries, including doctors, photographers, first responders—and, of course, the crowd favorite: mechanics and their trucks! Even Principal Terry and Assistant Principal Brown couldn’t resist hopping into the oversized truck. Career Days give our students a window into the future, helping them see the wide world of opportunities waiting for them. They spark curiosity, build connections and inspire our kids to dream big. Thank you to all our incredible visitors for making this day unforgettable!

Claudel is a junior on the boys cross country team at NRHS. Last week, Claudel won his second Rockland County individual title, clocking a time of 15:24.3 over the 3 mile course at Bear Mountain. This performance helped lead the team to their 4th consecutive team League title. His first title came as a freshman, the first in Rockland County history to accomplish that feat. Claudel has been on the varsity cross country team since 8th grade and he is also the team's junior captain. He has shown exemplary teamwork, dedication and heart to the cross country program. His coach said, "Claudel had become a true leader on and off the course."
