Dear Winter Park Band families,
Thank you to everyone for your efforts with our performance at the away football game this past Tuesday evening. We realize how much we ask of our community for that amount of time on a school night with students and their academic responsibilities and parent volunteers spending their time with us on a work night. There is a reason why the Winter Park Band has such a strong community, and it's because of you!

We will wait and see what the weather brings this week, but in the meantime here is our plan for the week ahead. Please stay up to date with the local weather forecast, OCPS weather alerts, and above all stay safe!
This week, the SOTW will perform at the home football game Thursday, 10/10, like a normal home game - full uniform, full performance of the show at halftime. It's pretty incredible that we only have 7 marching band rehearsals and 6 performances remaining for BEATLEMANIA! I can't wait to enjoy the last few weeks we have together with this show.
This coming Saturday, Jazz Ensemble I will give their first performance of the year at the Winter Park Autumn Art Festival. JEI performs on Saturday morning at 9 AM on the stage in Central Park, Downtown Winter Park. The WPAAF is free and open to the public, so please come to the park, bring a lawn chair or blanket, and enjoy some breakfast/brunch with jazz!
Looking ahead to next week, it's probably the heaviest week of band activities for all the SOTW students - Homecoming Week! The week's events include:
- Monday, 10/14 - No School
- Tuesday, 10/15 - SOTW Rehearsal 6 - 8:30 PM
- Wednesday, 10/16 - Homecoming Parade, 4 - 8 PM, Downtown Winter Park
- Thursday, 10/17 - FALL BAND CONCERT & 85th Anniversary Celebration, 6:30 PM student call time, 7 PM concert begins
- Friday, 10/18 - Homecoming Football Game, SOTW performs postgame
We're so excited to be celebrating the 85th Anniversary of the Band program at our annual Fall Band Concert. The concert will include performances that feature alumni of the program along with this year's Jazz Ensemble I and Wind Symphony. If you know any alumni who still live in the Central Florida area, please have them visit the Band Alumni Association website at https://winterparkhighschoolalumniband.com/.
On Saturday, October 26 we will join up with our friends in the bands from Freedom HS, Apopka HS, Horizon HS, Ocoee HS, Dr. Phillips HS, and West Orange HS at WOHS for the annual West Side Showcase. This is by far one of my favorite events of the whole school year. For those who haven't been to the Showcase before, it is a non-competitive, no rating, super supportive pre-MPA style event. We will bring in a few FBA trained adjudicator’s whose sole purpose will be to provide feedback on ways to improve our shows going into Marching MPA. Each band will get to perform for all the other bands and then have a short clinic time with wind, percussion and guard adjudicators on the field after their show. SOTW performs BEATLEMANIA at 5:45 PM, and a complete itinerary is available on the Band website.
Finally wrapping up our journey with BEATLEMANIA is Marching Band MPA on Saturday, November 2 at Boone HS. This performance culminates the students' hard work and journey with BEATLEMANIA from Band Camp until now. This is another one of my favorite days of the school year, and I can't wait to see where the show ends up for this performance! SOTW performs at 7:20 PM, and a complete itinerary is available on the Band website.

🎶 Hello, Band Families! 🎶
Last week sure hit a high note with some unexpected weather delays and a few "musical" lights in the sky! But, true to form, we didn’t miss a beat and rocked it as a Full Pep Band! This week, it’s time to march to the rhythm of the game in full uniform for Thursday’s home game. Make sure your student is in tune with all their uniform essentials: compression shorts, gloves, crew-length black socks, marching shoes, water jug, and show shirts.
🎺 Forgot or Lost your gloves? Don’t fret – new pairs are available for $5 (cash only)!
Missing Uniform Items
If your student has misplaced any of their uniform pieces, it’s time for a treble clef through the Band’s Lost ‘N Found! Located at the front of the band room, it’s got an ever-growing collection of water jugs and shoes that are waiting to find their rhythm again. We recommend adding a little personal flair to your items, like marking them with your student’s name. And if your student stumbles upon someone else’s misplaced solo, please help it find its harmony by bringing it to the Uniform Room or the Lost ‘N Found. There are students eagerly waiting for a reunion with their lost items!
🎶 Concert Ensemble Uniforms 🎶
Our Fall Band Concert is fast approaching - on October 17th! Some students still need to tune up their concert uniforms. Whether your student needs a new fit or to dust off last year’s (which might be hiding in the wings at home), now’s the time! If your student already has their uniform, have them try it on to make sure it’s still a sharp fit.

Private Lessons
Whether a student is learning a musical instrument to pursue a career in music, or simply for personal musical fulfillment and recreation, private lessons are one of the best investments that a parent can provide for their musical child. When working with a private teacher, students receive one-on-one instruction from a professional musician who specializes on that instrument.
Unlike a full band rehearsal experience, studying with a private teacher focuses in on the student’s individual needs. Students who study privately once a week from a professional musician are usually those who excel and find Band more enjoyable. These students frequently earn positions in honor groups like All-State and All-County, and make entry into our more advanced bands like Wind Symphony and Jazz Ensemble I. Some even go on to earn college scholarships, even if they are not majoring in music!
